It might be something to do with their education. I was in Poland once and went for a day trip across the border to the Czech Republic-totally different story! Like one hundred years advanced on Poland. If any country from the former 'East' will make it in the E.U. it will be the Czech Republic-almost like an East European Austria, mdern and clean. I was a student in Russia a long time ago and I can tell you that a lot of East European degrees are probably not worth much some people were writing a few hundred pages to get a Phd. I do not know if Polish women are always so thrifty. It all depends. As they het used to the west and gain new values they can start to want the same if not more than English women. Also great memories can be a dangerous and annoying thing too because they will always repete and remind you of something said or done twenty years ago! Every time you have an argument they love to repete something-they will never allow you to forget. Starnge as when it is something bad of their making they will never let you know about it. I also see that you have an age difference of sixteen years. Remember too that Polish women are less mature than English women. If you are living together and ant to be together see what happens, after all, you have destroyed your marriage-I imagine for this new love in your life so you have to some extent burnt your bridges. Only you know how you really feel so you will have to go with your instincts. If you have been together for a year now you will know that living with a Polish woman is rarely easy!

Nobody can learn a language in just two weeks and I doubt if even the course in Krakow say that. I did an interesting course in Krakow in 1986 and I was a student at the summer school of Polish at the Jagiellonsky University. I think the course cost around £400 and this included accommodation for the six weeks all lessons and wonderfull food. However, it was twenty odd years ago now and I do not know what is still on offer. There used to be a similar course held in Lublin too. You learnt quite a lot, I think it meant more to Americans than us Brits really as they got credit transfer for work offered on the course. What was nice of course, was the fact that I met some many interesting people from different countries around the world, especially from the United States and I kept in touch for a long time with some of the course participants. After all, what is the point of language aquisition if you do not meet and mix with people?

In some languages a noun can be used as an adjective but probably because of Latin usage this can not be done in Polish. You would have to say 'town of the castle'. When even in english would you say 'castle town'? It sounds rather strange. Maybe something like zamek za miastem or zamek przy zamku sounds better. Zamkowy would be used in an address more for instance 22b ulica zamkowa.

You can of course buy a book and learn the language for yourself at home for a fraction of the price. People make the mistake of thinking that spending lots of money will buy knowledge. Knowledge can not be bought like buying petrol for your car at a fuel station! It is a lot of hard work and a lot of perserverance is needed. A lot of the time spent on a language course in Poland will be spent on trips to see famous sights, museums and other cultural things in general. It often turns out that those who go away on these expensive courses are those who learn the least as people do these courses because they see them as a 'quick fix'.

Without knowing more it is very difficult to give advice. How old is this Polish girl/ Has she been in England long? Does she know English well? Does she have many friends and contacts other than in your house? All these things can be important in a relationship too. A relationship is very three dimensional and a woman's hapinness is based on various things coming together-well, I suppose that is true of all of us.

I think that without knowing all the daetails-it is very difficult to judge anybody. Maybe, the man in England was not very happy for a long time, maybe the son is now grown up. Often, when the children grow up there is nothing between husband and wife and they part. This is very common not only with Polish third parties. It is not clear if this same man is the father of this child to be in Poland. I do not see anything wrong with a man sending his ex a card maybe they still get on. Men have mid life crisis like women do and want to have another fling-I think that it is biology but women do it to men all the time too. I have known of couples in England who have been married for twenty five years plus who split for no apararent reason. The child is being born in Poland but it makes no difference to passport rights as my son has a British and a Polish passport though never visits Poland and was born in Guildford.

I would like to point out that women too can carry on behind a man's back. There are an amazing number of married couples in England with children and unknown to the man of the house, he is not the biological fther of one or more of his children. There is a HUGE number of such cases.

It does not matter how intensive something is you are unable to remember a lot of new words and facts over a very short amount of time. Rather like five day intensive driving courses. For those who have never driven before, they are very rarely successful.

Between the noun and a conecting adjective there is bound to be similarities. In English a house and the word housed but the question is one of grammar. In English I can say iron and then the word ring and even put them together as iron ring but in Polish it will be necessary to say the ring of iron or find an adjective if one exists. Castle town, as the question asked would indeed have to be transliterated as town of the castle (although the example is a little bit strange).

The word robota is mainly the general Slavonic word for work as in Russian, 'rabota and the verb 'rabotat'. The English took the word robot from the Slovanic but actually the English word 'robot' was taken from Czech vocabulary. Generally it is always moja praca and ja pracuje dzisiaj. Actually, I have driven through the town a few times and even went to a flat of a girl I knew a long time ago. I was there last year as I drove from Czestochowa to Radom-it lies on the route. Nice girls on the streets but it has always had a reputation for being a poor working town. I know little of its history but it is not a place you would want to stay in for long, even Radom is nicer and there is nothing really special about Radom either.

It might be a good idea to invest in a good Polish grammar book with cassettes. There are a few on the market rather than relying on computer translations as you will never really learn the language that way. With so many of the young leaving Poland now it is becoming something of a dead language. Another two hundred years and there will be more Welsh speakers than Polish in the world. If you visit Polish towns now the centres are empty as everybody who can goes abroad to work.
