Life / Where to take ID photos in Warsaw center? [7]

Depending on what kind of ID you are getting I would be careful where you get the pictures done.

I recently renewed my British passport & went to a local place which obviously did not know exactly what was required, ended up being told by the embassy to go somewhere under Dworzec Centralny for another set - cannot remember if it was fotokubus though.

Real Estate / Avoiding tax when selling a flat in PL [19]

It depends when you bought your flat.

I bought my flat in 2006 & will have to wait 5 full years after the end of 2006. Unfortunately the law changed at the end of 2006 & if you bought your flat in 2007 or later then to my knowledge there is no way of escaping the tax.

I might be wrong though so if anyone knows differently then I'd be just as interested in knowing

Life / What to bring, ship, pack for our move to Warsaw [67]

@ Harry

If you think Namaste serves better curry than anything you've had in the UK I dread to think which restaurants you've been to or where you lived.

They do serve a decent & cheap curry but it doesnt compare to what's available in London, not by a long shot.

Life / DIY store in Warsaw [6]

@ yorkssteve

I stand corrected. I'll be honest, hold my hands up & admit I've never been into Obi so was basing it more on adverts I've seen on tv which always seem to be for gardening stuff.

Unfortunately the only one I know seems to be in no mans land on the way to Marki. Leroy Merlin in Arkadia is very close to me, the Castorama I go to is next to Makro which is great & Marki has a few shops so I've never made the effort to specially go to Obi - will have to check it out some time.

Life / DIY store in Warsaw [6]

I'm pretty sure the big orange shops are Obi which is more of a garden related place.

You could try:
Castorama just off Aleje Jerozolimskie, past Blue City.
Ikea in Janki or Marki.
Praktiker - have a few locations, I normally see the one in Marki but google maps shows more.
Leroy Merlin - only ever been to the one in Arkadia

Travel / Kraków to Stockholm, Riga, and Helsinki - any suggestions? [19]

^^^ As said above i don't think you'll find any bargains getting from Helsinki to Tallinn.

I don't know how long you're going away for but I'd definitely recommend Tallinn & Vilnius above Riga. Tallinn has a stunning old town & for me is the pick of the three, Riga attracts way too many stag parties & is also the most expensive.

It's also well worth checking out the Lithuanian coast, in particular the Curonian Spit which has beautiful sand dunes & a place called witches hill with lots of bizarre wooden sculptures - can be done as a day trip from Klaipeda or you can stay in Nida at the bottom of the spit.

Food / Asian Grocers - Krakow [10]

Ok, wasn't sure what exactly what you were looking for before but tbh I don't think I've seen much in the way of raw ingredients here. Most stuff will be expensive unfortunately, the market isn't very big & I guess the importers think they can take the ****.

I remember seeing lemon grass in bomi (expensive supermarket) & in Kuchnie Swiata & frozen Kaffir lime leaves in Kuchnie Swiata.

There's a little shop in Warsaw at the bottom of Poznanska street, near the Piekna end that might be worth checking out but I can't promise much, only been there once.

Food / Asian Grocers - Krakow [10]

I don't know if you're looking for spices/curry pastes or whatever but surely Kuchnie Swiata should be able to help you out.

There's a big market near me in Warsaw & surprisingly one of the little veg shops has a load of stuff so maybe there's something similar down in Krakow.
