Life / Moving to Wroclaw from California, need tips [30]

Regarding airports. Berlin, Germany is 4 1/2 hours away by car. Warsaw is 5 hours away.

Do you want local flights or inter-continental ? Long distant flights usually have a change in either Warsaw, Germany or the UK.

Real Estate / Apartment purchase in Poland [226]

I meant: have you found any 'good' web-sites. I know you have addresses because some of them are posted on this thread.

Not a trick. Just me not thinking.

News / Terrible School Incident in Gdansk, Poland [34]

I spoke about this yesterday on another thread.

It was the Headmistress who called the teacher out of class and didn't replace her with a substitute. But another teacher was keeping an eye on the class from time to time.

The incident took place and no pupils said or did anything. When the teacher came back the girl had left the school and still no-one in the class said anything. It was only when a girl started crying that anything was said.

When I was at school we weren't left alone for even five minutes.

It's the school that should carry responsibility for this.

Life / Halloween in Poland? [77]

The house I live in is more than 130 years old and I sometimes think it is haunted. Haven't seen anything tonight though.

Food / Christmas Dinner in Poland [33]

The Christmas meal is eaten on the 24th traditionaly, when the first star appears in the sky. In truth it is usually a little later. In this house it's at about 6 or 7pm.

The main dish is carp, which can be served in a variety of ways [usually fried].
There are many regional differences and I'm sure that you will see some differences of opinion when posters discuss this.
I won't tell you everything, but one strange thing is the extra plate setting for an unexpected guest.

News / November 11 in Poland [15]

hello,

Poland was free between WWI and WWII. I would call November 11 Pilsudski day !!

Amathyst,

I once did the parade in London on November 11. I balled my eyes out for about two hours. All in pride for those who paid the ultimate price and for those alongside me.

modacone,

I would argue that they are the same thing. Poland would not have gained independence [on Nov 11] had WW1 not finished on Nov 11. One happened because of the other.

Oops, it was Rememberance Sunday. [post 7]

But I'm sure you know what I meant.

Food / Christmas Dinner in Poland [33]

Huegel,

We have a Polish Christmas on the 24th and an English Christmas on the 26th. [not 25th]

Twice I have poured brandy on the pud, my wife has lit it and I managed to set her on fire.

There shouldn't be any alcohol on a Polish Christmas table. But I've yet to meet anyone who follows this tradition.

Food / Christmas Dinner in Poland [33]

Huegel,

We get everything [apart from the turkey] sent from the UK. We have the meal on the 26th because the family here insist on having a Polish 24th and 25th. The English style Christmas we have here is because I asked for it and also because I cook it.

It's not a Polish Christmas without carp.

Food / Christmas Dinner in Poland [33]

Amathyst,

Are the decorations on your Chritmas cake handed down ?

My mum has been using the same ones since I don't know when.

Shall we tell the Polish folk on here how to feed a homemade Christmas cake ?

You beat me to it.

A lot of young people don't like carp at Christmas. It's because it has too many bones.

Carp in jelly is called Jewish Carp.

If it was very sweet it might have been Pike. Also eaten at Christmas.

Life / The Christmas Tree in Poland [25]

In Poland the tree should go up on the 24th. There are no presents underneath it [at first]
The presents appear under the tree after the Christmas meal.
Different regions, different traditions. A Star Man or Angel or Santa bring the presents through a window which has been left open.
You should remember that Santa brings presents on Santa Claus Day, December 6th.
The tree is decorated in the English fashion, but it is different in every household.

Life / The Christmas Tree in Poland [25]

Fisz,

Now we are at the point where traditions borrow from each other.

I would say that we don't leave anything for Santa on Santa Claus Day.
Usually gifts are just handed over on Dec 6th.

I have heard that santa [at Xmas] comes down the chimney, but others will say that an angel comes through the window.

Also, it's not normal, as in England, to give piles of presents on Xmas Eve. [We don't give presents on Christmas Day].

Because traditions vary I will wait for other people to post their version of Christmas.

Life / Old Polish Song~ Possibly children's [36]

seachild,

This might seem a dumb question but what is your father's [or should it be Grandfather] surname ? That should tell you if he is Russian or Polish.

edit. sorry I used the wrong name.

I'm almost willing to bet that he came from south-east Poland or what is now Ukraine.
Was he Jewish?

Life / Old Polish Song~ Possibly children's [36]

seachild,

I don't want to put things in your head and then we get it wrong.
But:
Grandfather was born before 1918. So if he was born in the east of Poland that would mean 'Russian' shows up on documents.
Polish people can be listed as Polish, German, Russian, etc. All because Poland was occupied or the borders moved.

Where was the census taken ? Do you have details ? It might be worth checking again. :)

seachild,

Go to: castlegarden.org

Passenger lists. When you enter a name don't fill in first name. Then check all results.

You will find about ten "Boruch" names.
