News / Dealing with constant insults against Polish [323]

Never heard about adjusting of locomotives' wheels on e.g. Polish-Russian border ?

Which was in German hand for most of the war against Russia. I can't see the American's building a railway to a different guage in German occupied Poland/Russia so they could supply Russia.

How do you know that they wouldn't accept Germany's reign in Europe?

I think they probably would have, the effort required would have been huge and if Hitler removed the communists they would have been very pleased. Remember that removing Fascism wasn't the prime purpose of the allies efforts - look how Spain was left under the control of Franco. President Bush's grandfather was convicted of helping the Nazi's war effort, so working with the Nazi's would not have been beyond reason.

I agree with Matyjasz.

There is also the language problem when choosing a university in a non-English speaking country.

Agreed getting taught English at the same time as getting your degree is a definite advantage. In Sweden ALL teaching is in English from an early age.

Love / Discussion about Polish Men's Tempers [103]

Weed makes some people violent.

Don't do it.

Having said that, my dad had a very bad temper. Never violent though.

Because of this there wouldn't have been a second front in the west and Germany would have sent it's full strength to defeat Russia. Like I said before, Poland defeated Russia in 1920.

The Axis powers had 90% of their strength against the Soviet Union. By the time the Allies invaded in 1944 the Axis were in full retreat. Do you think having an extra 10% would have allowed Germany to defeat the Soviet Union? Seems highly unlikely.

Yes, Poland defeated the Russians in 1920. However the army's were ten times bigger in 1943.

Trucks, yes. Boots yes, Locomotives, yes.

But for the other stuff, what %age of the total Soviet needs/production? Did it make teh difference between winning or loosing, or were the 20Million Russia dead a better contribution.?

WW2 cost Britain £300Billion, $1200billion in 1945 money.

Your 50 => 700Bn calculation is wrong. Its more like $250Bn. Britain paid for it BTW, it wasn't a gift.

Travel / Hotel in krakow for a romantic weekend? [7]

Amadeus Hotel is good, but was booked when I went. As was Copernicus
I stay here if I could.

The hotel I stayed in was Hotel Francuski

yourpoland .co.uk/index.php?pid=3&id=255&servicetype=hotel&R oomID=4504&CurrencyID=4&ArrivalDate=2007-03-15&NumOfNights=2&NumOfRoom s=1&BookingOnline=1&Smoking=3

Was not bad. Its seems much cheaper than when I went, which turned out to the busiest day of the year. At the price theya re charging 42euro a night, its worth it.

Thats impossible. How exactly did the US get supplies to Russia? They had to be shipped from US to Uk, then on by the British navy to Archangel.

It is physically impossible for the amount of supplies you claim to have been shipped, Britain barely get enough through to supply its army one tenth the size of Russia's. Britain did supply as much as it could but the figures were tiny compaired to the USSR's needs.

The allied bombing didn't significatly affect production. What hurt them far more was the reapture of the oil fields by the Russians. The US did supply one thing in major numbers - trucks by the hundred of thousand. In fact the Ruskies had a saying the USA stamped on the stood for (in russian) Fu** that Son-of-bit*h Adolf.

However your claim that the US supplied 98% of Soviets supplies is laughable. Stopping the Germans advance to Moscow and at Stalingrad were entire Soviet doings, there were hardly any supplies sent by that stage in the war. BTW the UK made a considerable effort to resupply the USSR.

Quoting: MATRIX
i wonder what would you think if everyone in the Uk started to speak his own language??

They already do. There are 400 languages spoke in London every day. 60% of the population are non-Londoners. If you don't like Spain you can leave you know - you are welcome here.

n a slightly different but still related tack, how much does it cost to take say a first degree in Poland, the US and Canada and anyplace else that people would care to bring in.

Miles out. Average student debt was £14K

Doesn't anybody know how to use Google anymore. I don't know.

Getting a degree doesn't make you smart.
My A-levels were way harder than my degree. Maths Physics Chemistry, I had to do 6hours homework every night and at weekends.

Some subjects are a joke, arts subjects for instance. Reading a F***ing book, wow.

yes, 3 yrs, but how many hours you do here per week and how many in Poland, huh?

Depends on the course, the University and how much coursework you had to do. My engineering degree was about 30hours lectures and maybe 15 hours coursework.

You can always get a postgraduate if you want. I can't see the point.

Ok, good point. As its not a practical degree though its not necessary a good sign of an education system. Old communist eduction systems were always said to be good for the fundamentals, whereas what might be needed is more practical subject or teaching.

Battle of the Bulge? Thats when the Germans attack at the weakest point manned by Americans. The British attacked the Germans around the north of the bulge and helped stop the advance.

The war in the west was trivial compaired to that in the east. Number of Soviets/allies kia/captured in the east 20Million. Germany kia/captured 15million

USA deaths 418K, UK 450K in all theatres. The total number of Germanys facing the 1944 landings was 400K. 90% of the Axis armies were fighting Russia.

As I said, the US and UK contributions were comparatively trivial. The US didn't volunteer to fight either Germany or Japan. Both declared war on the US and attacked it.

Yes, the USA only got involved when the USSR rolled into Berlin. Idiot!

As Russia would have defeated Germany without help of the US, in May 1945 Russia could have simply driven from Berlin to Paris and installed communism throughout Europe, putting allied troops there prevented that. Stalin would have all Germany's technology. Such as the V2. So no space technology for the USA. Whether even Russia could of invaded Britain is debatable. Th 1940 plans for operation Sealion would have resulted in the destruction of the German invasion force.

The USA involvement was not an altruistic sacrifice, it made a considerable profit out of it. and protected its self from eventual defeat by the commiunists.

Whats the percentage of people who do a university degree in Poland?

From talking to Polish friend about my degree subject (Maths, which is good 'benchmarking' subject) I get the distinct impression that what they were taught (many years after me) is roughly comparable to my degree but is more advanced than the Maths degrees in the UK today. I am just interested from maybe Polish people who have compared their degrees to non Polish friends.

I have to disagree that Maths is a benchmark degree. Its to specialised.

Shame on you Peter, you mean to say that you are not picking up your emails at 9pm at home after travelling from one side of the country to the other for a meeting???

I work at home and never go to meeting. I do basically work all waking hours but seems to spend far too much time surfing.

And many British people, especially in the South East have a life dominated by work and a lousy life style. Getting paid more money doesn't male it better, worse if anything because more is expected. Some companies expect you to be available 24-7.

UK, Ireland / English, Irish, Scots: They're All One, Genes Suggest [69]

How do you explain Christopher Columbus? The Native Americans? Cro-magnon originated in Africa and made his way to Europe, explain that one.

Very distinct migrations that you can measure.

im talking about today - your being flipant now.

Thats exactly where you are going wrong, this is a historical study, when people did not move from their birthplace. Thats why you can use genetics to trace a language.

Forget teh issue of Poland and China, its a red herring. According to that map everyone in eastern europe must be 100% Mongels

UK, Ireland / English, Irish, Scots: They're All One, Genes Suggest [69]

Im saying that the ENGLISH LANGUAGE arrived in the isles around the 5th C AD.
IT IS PROVEN BY MINDS GREATER THAN YOU OR I

THAT IT IS A WESTERN GERMANIC LANGUAGE

Origins of language are not confined to genetics. if that were so, why do i speak english when i come from Gallic family? SOCIO-POLTICIAL FACTORS

THE ANGLE-SAXONS BROUGHT it from SAXONY/JUTELAND (NOW GERMANY) and they RULED the isles and IMPOSED there language!

Thereby NOT rubbishing what ive said - in fact all ive done is point out sources!

Genetics is ONE factor - which I ALREADY AGREED WITH BUT langauge is a total OTHER point.

Those source quote are now been proved to be wrong. I didn't write the article, I had no input on it, I'm merely trying to get you to read it.

Read the article before spouting off. English came to Britain before the Roman invasion possibly from northern France.

f they were raised by chinese people - yes! your language is NOT genetic YOur are nOT born with English ore pOlish in your blood (why learn it in school if that is the case)

How on earth would a Chinese person get to Poland 1000 years ago? Get on a train?
