Language / Dual language books..SUGGESTIONS? [10]

I just want to try and read more so any suggestions on where I can find fairly simple Polish will be great.

On that website quoted by HAL9009, you can find simple short stories with sound files and I've just started working on them now that I've finished the first year course book...

They are the only easy collection of short texts in Polish I've seen online.

Language / Verbs and vocabulary around squatting [5]

Hey all,

Wierd topic to be discussing in a language exchange but I need some advise on what words are used when talking about squatting in Polish...

I know that squat is skłot but is there a verb?

All I could find online is kucać. Is that the only verb, or is there an imperfective/perfective pair of verbs that people use?

Also if anyone has any other vocabulary around squatting that you could post that would be great :)

Language / dostawać/dostać vs dostawać się/dostać się [3]

Hello all!

I use 301 Polish verbs by Klara Janecki as a supplement to my study, and she has me confused...

I am told in my textbook that dostawać/dostać is the verb to mean "get"

But in 301 Polish verbs, the verb dostawać się/dostać się is also given as meaning the same thing...

My question is: are these two verbs interchangeable? Or do you use them in different situations?

Any help would be appreciated!

I don't think censuring the public's use of images is the way forward... that sounds like something a dictator would do... it's just an image... most people who wear it do it cause they think it's a cool image... I had a Che t-shirt for years before I knew who he was!

Next they will be banning anything that goes against Catholicism, then anything which goes against the image of the family, then anything which the government just doesn't like...

Kinda backwards, no?

Do you have friends you can stay with in Toronto? It's important to leave the house if he is being violent with you...

If you allow him to use violence as a way of controlling the situation, then he will do it in future too. You might not have been hurt badly this time, but what if he actually USED the knife on you?!?!

You need to report him to the police (after you have taken some of your belongings and moved in with a friend/relation for a while) and take it from there.

It's terrible that men have to resort to violence so often... shameful and disgusting.

But really a forum isn't the place you can get help!

You need to get the support of your friends and relatives in Canada!!

Please take care of yourself!!

Language / Building my Polish vocabulary... [19]

Hey all!

I've been learning Polish for some time now, and the grammar has just started to click with me and it's all making sense woohoo!

But my problem is remembering vocabulary... I'm not the kind of person who enjoys (or can manage) learning long lists of vocabulary...

I meet a Polish girl every week for a language exchange but I always end up running out of words quite quickly :(

Any pointers or tips ye can give me???

Language / Polish passive voice - is it restricted only to writing? [4]

Hello all,

I just started studying the passive voice in my textbook and am curious about something... Do people use it when they are talking in everyday situations? Or is it restricted only to writing?

For example, could you say:

Pan Wiktor został zaangażowany przez pana Józefa

or would you avoid the passive voice altogether and just use the active voice:

Pan Józef zaangażował pana Wiktora.

Are there any websites that have reading texts geared towards learners? -preferably with vocabulary sections and comprehension questions...

I didn't make up the sentence... it's from one of the grammar drills in my book (First Year Polish) and I think it's just to make you try and create the verbal noun from the verbs given...

But it makes more sense now :)

I don't think I've ever even said such a sentence in English!

Language / verbal nouns in -nie [7]

Hi all,

I'm new to the forums so greetings first of all :)

I'm studying verbal nouns at the moment and am stuck.

When you make noun from a reflexive verb should you keep the reflexive participle 'się' or should you get rid of it? My example is 'martwić się'. Should the verbal noun be 'martwienie się', or just 'martwienie'? Or to illustrate it in a sentence:

1. On zajmuje się martwieniem
2. On zajmuje się martwieniem się

Is 1 or 2 correct above?
