Feedback / Today's Polish Name Day - New Feature [41]

Does anyone remember the names at the top of the screen for yesterdays name day, September 21st? Is there any way I can find what names came up for the previous day?

Love / The meaning of a gift in a lovely bag in Poland - given after Valentines day? [7]

I'm going to have to agree with Saphire & Jestesjedyny. I know he likes me. The 'relationship' is a lot more complicated than I revealed, but God willing, everything works out. Just tonight we were laughing about a meal I made. It was a simple meal for Lent, I usually make more elaborate things. He joked that he couldn't believe I could actually make something so simple. Then he said it was too salty, and very spicy with pepper. I know this isn't true, because he loves pepper. I was worried I didn't put enough. He teases like a schoolboy. It's cute.

Love / The meaning of a gift in a lovely bag in Poland - given after Valentines day? [7]

I was given a gift in a lovely bag, the other day. Inside this bag there was a beautiful cup, saucer, cake plate set in a box wrapper with a pink ribbon. Also in this bag, was a huge box of chocolates, TWÓJ SEKRET , it's called, and a basic Polish language course

I was given these things the day after Valentines day. I know the language course was bought on Valentines, I believe the other things were brought back from Poland after New Years. They could have been bought here, but seriously doubt it. We live in a small town. Now, my mother likes this man, but is afraid we are too different and his family wouldn't accept me if we were to become more than friends. We constantly flirt, talk and laugh together and I've fallen for him. He's even become godfather to our niece, my niece! My mother makes him nervous and if he would have brought me that big gift bag and those goodies on Valentines day, she would have flipped! We're both adults, but there is a lot more to this whole thing.

What do you think his gift meant, if anything at all?

Food / Polish sausage ( don't laugh ) [11]

Help! Last weekend, our family got together to make homemade sausages. We ground the meat, added seasoning, and stuffed it in a casing. Many ethnic varieties were made that day, including Polish.

I looked up a recipe for Polish sausage on the net and found 2 that seemed to be ok.
My Polish guy was on hand to look over the recipe and thought it weird that it called for sugar to be added. Together we decided to combine, pork & beef, salt, pepper, and lots of garlic. I added Marjoram, and Paprika to the mix because he couldn't remember any other seasonings that went in, besides, that's what my recipes called for.

After stuffing the sausage, I cooked it in a pan with a little water. I didn't know exactly how to cook it, and he had gone to work before leaving instructions. When he tasted the final product he said it was different. Not only because it was cooked differently, but the spices were different. We still have some uncooked sausage left, but he wants to smoke that. He's from Poland, and he says, their sausage's are cooked in a special salt? and smoked. I asked him what kind of salt, but he has no idea.

By the way, my brother-in-law is getting a smoker just for the sausage.

My question is this: Does anyone have any recipes for Polish sausage? Spices? Should I have used sugar? What special salt is he talking about? How do you smoke it? Type of wood?

Language / Why do people want to study Polish? [90]

I want to learn Polish, for a few reasons.

1. I became very interested in a Polish man, a while ago, and I want to impress him a bit.

2. He went home to Poland over Christmas break and brought me back a Polish language book and a beautiful book on Poland, it's people and places. ( I guess he wants me to learn Polish, huh)

3. He gave me wonderful Valentines gifts, and one of them was another Polish language book. The one he gave me last time was an excellerated version supposed to teach the language in 4 weeks! Uh, Yeah right. He listened to the CD I was learning from and didn't like it too well, so he's bought me another.

That's why I want to learn...I also happen to like languages as well. I speak 2 others besides my native AMERICAN ENGLISH!

Life / Polish Name Day celebration [40]

with all that said, How do you say "Happy Name Day" in Polish. The more I think about it, I think we'll have our usual Sunday dinner, with the family, BBQ, beers , etc, and I'll just say Happy Name Day to him. We'll make a bigger deal of his birthday, when the time comes.

I heard that people receive gifts on their names days. Please give an example. This would be for a man.

Life / Polish Name Day celebration [40]

Name day doesn't sound so great. Maybe I should just wait and throw a party for his 40th birthday, a few months from now. Do Poles do anything for birthdays?

That's it, just his name? Here we put >HAPPY BIRTHDAY (NAME) < on a cake and add candles. You're saying just put his name? Do we add candles?

Life / Perfekt music group [17]

Has anyone heard of this Polish band? I looked online for information but I can't seem to pull up anything on albums, or tracks. This one music site I visited notes there are two Polish bands with the same name. One started in 1977 and a newer one. I looked up 'JOLKA JOLKA' , one of their songs and got a picture of a bunch of old guys. Is this the same band?

Life / Polish Name Day celebration [40]

A friend of mine from Poland has now moved to America. His name day is coming up very soon. I know name days are more important than birthdays to Europeans, but how do you celebrate? I'm planning on having a barbeque for him with some friends, lots of beer, vodka, and cake of course, but what else? Are there special things I've left out? Since it's his name day and not birthday do we say 'happy 40th name day' even though he wont be 40 until mid July?

I can put happy 30th name day, since he doesnt look a day over 30. He doesn't want to be 40.

Language / good luck sayings [5]

what do the others mean? Related:

"Good luck" interpretation in Poland

Hi one question: if someone says powodzenia, meaning "Good luck", in Poland, does it mean they wish you good luck and don't ever want to see you again?

No, although that meaning can be conveyed by a cold or sarcastic tone of voice upon delivery. Otherwise, it is a sincere wish for your success.

'Powodzenia!', sometimes 'Sto lat!' may be used to wish luck, i.e. congratulate. Normaly, one hears either one or the other, depending on the context. 'Take it easy!' in the sense of 'Good luck, take care!' may be rendered 'Trzymaj się!' as well.

Language / good luck sayings [5]

Is there anything Poles say to one another before, a driver's test?

Or something similar to "THIRD TIMES A CHARM"

and what would be appropriate if he's failed his test?

Thanks, Melissa

Language / Wanna converse with Polish people [30]

Hello, I'm also looking for people to converse with. I'm learning Polish from a CD course, but its too fast. I need to actually practice the language with live people rather than trying to copy sounds coming from my cd player.
