Law / Advice on investment of $40,000 in the Warsaw area [30]

when everybody wants to sell at the same time (for real estate market "the same time" maybe a range of 2-5 years), the prices are going to drop, and fast...

true ... but given the fact that property prices usually go up (long run) not the other way around .. the decline caused by the sell-off should be offset by inflationary and high-demand causes of price increase. Overall I think buying a property in Poland is still profitable, especially since property taxex are virtually nonexistent :)

Why is the property price in Poland so ridiculously high ...!!!

artificial demand for property created this .. everyone is buying apartments even though they dont need them .. just want to sell with profit in coupple of years when prices stabilize

USA, Canada / Canadian moving to Poland...any advice? [30]

You will notice lots of differences, for instance:

1. You do not say hi or smile to unknown people you walk by on the street (that's something we're used to do in Canada).

2. When greeting with friends and relative there is lots of bear-shakes or kissing the cheeks (even for guys) and so on .. whereas in Canada private space is considered much bigger :)

3. Vodka/beer is sold in grocery stores next to bread or deli (dont have to look for that LCBO store that closes so early :)

5. If you will be driving a car, watch it ... roads and drivers are far different from Canadian conditions (much more aggressive)

6. Poland has a huge percentage of practising catholics .. therefore very religious country. Try not to talk about religion or politics with the person you dont know well yet as these are a two very sensitive topics.

7. Customer's rights and privilages in stores are much more limited in Poland. Remember that it is not easy to return purchased merchandise. (return policy is different from store to store)

8. Dont assume anything whilke being in the foreign countyr. Things aren't done same way as in Canada.

One may identify lots of similarities when comparing Polish culture to the Canadian one, however you have to equip yourself with a lot of patience and traveller's wisdom :) Although lots of things may seem difficult to understand at first, I am sure you will quickly find out that Poland is a great country and you will enjoy learning about its culture, customs, and history.

UK, Ireland / Polish night in an english club? No way....... [51]

many young british visit poland to buy cheap drink & have sex with girls
why polish girls are so cheap. They can do anything for money... that's bad

This is so biased ... I'm sure we all can find some girls from UK who can do anything for the money. Just go to such & such street and ask for it ... "the services will not be refused"

uk_ , let's try not to generalize tings .. it's so easy to insult someone and so hard to bring back the respect

USA, Canada / Canadian moving to Poland...any advice? [30]

It seems like it's not going to be just a culture shock for you but also for yur child. I figure that you must have some serious reasons why you want to move to Poland. Anyways, It's so hard to advise someone but I would strongly suggest checking "Articles about Poland" section of this forum. They have some stuff you could benefit from knowing. But in generl after coming to the country you should enroll in some polish language courses as English IS NOT widely known, young people know it but it will not be fluent among all and Polish is the key to communicate.

News / Poland over the next 10 years? [79]

After all that discussion on how to improve Poland why don't just all of us that were speaking here on the issue go back to Poland as a team and simpy wipe out all the mess and **** that was created in our lovely country. I think we have the tools, hands, knowledge, and the balls to do that ... what do you say!??! Any real patriots here ready for some action?

News / Poland over the next 10 years? [79]

the reason is that it has very little natural resources, a lack lustre manufacturing industries and very little tourist spots..

Not every country is rich in resources, if you don't have them all you have to do is to develop wery strong knowledge/consulting/information industry and provide high cost services to other countries. This works for many countries. You really dont have to possess gold, oil, diamonds or uranium to be a fully functional society with a healthy cashflow.

Life / Tradition of Polish Women's Last names vs. Men's [8]

maybe because of the ending with "uk" .. Last names ending with "uk" are popular for Ukraine, or the ones ending with "is" are popular for Lithuania, and so on..

News / Poland over the next 10 years? [79]

More drugs? More and more idiots coming to power? Collapse of underfunded public sectors, i.e. education and health service? Property prices bubble? Shortage of those willing to pay taxes for the growing number of those retired?

this is already happenning :(

you can try as well if you want Kamyk

Sure, I can join women's federation. Why the hell not :) I will just feel like at home there :)

but seriously maybe this is a good point to start something ....

Hmm.. This could be a success. You could start with some charity work, field trips, meetings at the bar or whatever. Let me know if you get any ideas so we could join the task forces, eh? It's quite far to Montreal from here but you never know :) Advertising at the local church could return some feedback too...

News / Poland over the next 10 years? [79]

My Predictions for the next decade or so:
- the economics will improve (more work, new industries)
- probably a lots of people will stay outsite in western countries because the money factor
- more stable politics and relations with neighbours ( if President Putin eases off his tactics :) ..)
- change in Poland's demography as the country will face increased immigration from Asian/African/etc.. countries.

In general, I think Poland will present itself better over the years, but our home country will face problems that were never present in Poland before. I am very cerious to see how the developments will take place and how the management (politicians) will tackle the problems and how they will use the new apportunities as well.

there are some shortages of workers within Poland -which I guess means more overseas workers (from Ukraine etc?) going to work in Poland

Yes, there is a shortage but I think this will correct itself within couple of years. Polish people already recognized the same dillema therefore I'm sure there are already people training with an objective to become a skilled trades worker. Since not everyone wants to emigrate from Poland I'm sure this shortfall of skilled workers will become smaller and smaller over time with a help from new immigrants from Ukraine, Russia, Hungary .. etc .. So I guess now would be the best time to come to Poland if you want to find work in construction etc..

Will the Polish national character etc change in the future?

Anybody who experienced emigration in their lives or at least very frequent travel to other countries for financial reasons will tell you that their personality, world and life perspectives or attitudes to work and education changed. So yes, I believe the national character will evolve TO SOME DEGREE over time.

Love / Are you in a Polish-nonPolish relationship? [150]

would never suspect myself of being soooooooo POLISH no matter how strange it sounds...

It's within us, it's what defines us .. whether we realize or not we'll always be Polish. No matter how hard we try to hide our identity, imperfections, or personal trails - we will always be the way we always have been.

Sometimes I have a feeling that we look at the same thing and see something totally different.

Sometimes that is what attracts us to other people .. the actual differences in age, perspectives, opinions = simply put "a change", or chance for something opposite from our every day lives

"polish-speaking" forums for Polish-Canadians / Polish-immigrants

maybe Kamyk will be more lucky ...

hey, I've just found the following on the Concordia University website.

Polish Students’ Association
2010 MacKay Q-02
psamontreal.com
psa@psamontreal.com
The polish students’ association helps in organizing many Polish Events in Montreal like “Polish Paths” a Polish Cultural Festival. They have joined to the biggest charity organization in Poland, the great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, and have helped to organize the Great Finales in Montreal.

However the polish club's site they have a reference to is dead. I suppose the club is up and down periodically as like any other polish club on all universities in Canada .. maybe except for U of Toronto.

Forgetmenots, you could get in touch with Concordia's Student Union and check out if the club is active this academic year and get the Club President's email or something :)

USA, Canada / Polish Canadians [117]

the reson for not having too many Canadians here on this forum could be a fact that it's an English speaking one.

Could be true .. by the way, are there any "polish-speaking" forums for Polish-Canadians / Polish-immigrants?

Not to mention the amount of leyered clothes I have to wear, plus my heavy duty hiking boots, scarf, and a sheep skin hat

that sounded so funny, I wish I could see you this way :) Hang on in there! It's just couple months of reezing weather left eek:

Yes, finally some sun is coming back to our Canadian winter. I was waiting for it so badly as I couldn't make any photos of our Canadian fauna & flora this season....

Language / English words and expressions used in Polish conemporary language [16]

however the topic is:English words used in Polish, so perhaps you have something to add as well.

ohh ... my bet Miranda. You made the question more difficult than I originally had it in my imagination :) ...

Well, I guess for the Polish-Canadians the following would be pretty often used:
- insurance
- no problem
- experience
I could even hear some attempts of "Polishing" the english words to make them sound Polish .. whatever is the reason for such language development :) ---> ie. "dzwoniłem dzisiaj do inszury"

Language / English words and expressions used in Polish conemporary language [16]

I've heard some funny ones lately:

"malanżyk" - party
"ściemniać coś" - to lie
"ostra jechanka" - something is cool
"puścić głuchego" - to send SMS

I hope that the above will give you an update in the street-polish language :)

USA, Canada / Polish Canadians [117]

I'm Polish Canadian ... living in Waterloo ... where Polish community is rather big but I find them not visible and not involved ... I'm speaking from experience where I tried to run a Polish Students club with my friends here in both universities in town but as I said we haven't had much success ..

Food / any Polish good recipes for fish? [10]

I know Ryba po grecku - Fish Greek style - but it's served cold and I am not fond of that.

I also like it warmed up next day or so ... have anyone tried?
