Bambrzy (Poznańskie Bambry, German: Posener Bamberger) are the Poles of German origin, the descendants of Germans who moved from the area of Bamberg (Upper Franconia, Germany) to villages surrounding Poznań, Poland.

The Polonisation of this group was a voluntary act and happened very quickly. The settlers refused to build their own churches, prayed with Poles, and their children learned the Polish language. There were also many mixed marriages with Poles living there. At the end of the 19th century, during the Kulturkampf period, all Catholics in villages inhabited by Bambrzy chose Polish nationality during Prussian and German censuses.

Many of them were soldiers of the Polish army fighting in Great Poland Uprising. During the German occupation of Poland most of them, just as most Poles, were persecuted for their Polishness.



The advent of democracy in Poland in 1989 saw the beginning of a renaissance of the Bamber culture. The best-known aspect of this culture are the rich female dresses.

The attic shows a list of rulers of the Jagiełło Dynasty from Władysław II Jagiełło and Jadwiga of Poland to Sigismund II Augustus. In the middle of the parapet there is a small tower with a clock and a mechanism that controls two goats. The current mechanism behind the goats dates from the end of the 20th century. The goats bump heads daily at 12:00 noon.

Below that is the monogram of Stanisław August Poniatowski. A model of an eagle, which survived World War II in hiding, returned to the tower in 1947

Mieszko I, the first known duke of the Polans, built one of his castles in Poznań. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul is the oldest Polish cathedral, founded in Poznań during the latter half of the 10th century. The city would become the capital of Greater Poland. Mieszko I's son, Boleslaus the Brave, was crowned king in 1025 and the Kingdom of Poland was formed. Greater Poland became the 'cradle of the Polish state'

The name Poznań probably comes from a personal name Poznan (from the Polish participle poznan(y)) and would mean "Poznan's town." It is also possible the name comes directly from the verb poznać which means "to get to know" or "to recognize".

"Teatr Polski" (Polish theatre) Poznań has been build in 19 century. It is interesting part of Kulturkampf between the Germans and the Poles. You know "who is better" Polonisation or Germanisation ?

Finaly Poznań won this war and this is one of the symbols of this war.

19th century in Poznań has been very intereting.

Poznań was like Belfast on the one side the Poles and some old German immigrants. On the other New Germans brought by Prussian authorities and the Jews changing side all the time.

Although most of the administrative measures aimed against the Poles remained in force until 1918, between 1912 and 1914 only four Polish-owned estates were expropriated, while at the same time Polish social organizations successfully competed with German trade organizations and even started to buy land from the Germans. The long-lasting effect of the Polish-German conflict in the area was development of a sense of Greater Polish identity, distinct from the identity common in other parts of Poland and primarily associated with nationalist ideas rather than socialism, prevailing in other parts of the country in 20th century.

One Polish town against economic power of whole German empire and Polish Poznań bought them out.

Germans never dominated Poznań. They have lost in trade war. They were bought out or polonisated. Bamber ( polonisated german settler) means savage in our dialect.

Now when we are part of EU we can make economical expansion in eastern Germany.

False. It was King Kazimierz long before protestants.

By the way it is strange to talk about protestants and catholics with people from country durring religous war. Look on Northern Irleand.
