The point is the fact that the way somebody dresses might lead to (in your own words) "an astronomically improved chance of random beating" and how much it says that we and Poland in particular still have to learn a lot about tolerance and peace and harmony.

Not only in Poland and not only concerning gay people. Here is an example of people in Glasgow dressed in a certain way (and playing certain songs) that led to an astronomically improved chance of a random beating.

Yes, but that was more just because the missus left me 4 days into my stay. This was 2 days after starting a job and with only 2 weeks left on the flat. So that made things a struggle just because I didn't know anyone. I think the best advice I can give is come over with plenty of cash (enough to last you at least 2 months VERY comfortably) and get yourself out with various expats and gain as many contacts as possible...it will make your life a lot easier the more people you know. I know there is the whole thing of "ooo, you come to another country and hang about with other expats" thing, but for the start it is very handy to get yourself some grounding.

The language could be a struggle depending where you stay. A lot of shops in smaller neighbourhoods don't speak english and you have to ask for things over the counter. So try and get your girlfriend to teach you as much as possible before you come.

Emmm...other than that it's all good. Great city, great beer and great people. You will love it.

It is gonna be tough, have plenty saved up before you come. In your line of work it is going to be hard to pick up a job without the language...but it is possible (and a great way to learn by the way, just don't repeat too much to your girlfriend ;) ).

There is so very much I could tell you about life in Kraków...is there any specifics that you want to know to save my lazy fingers?

This is gonna be a bit of a nightmare to be honest. Certificates you need invold tax registration, SANEPID (which is a total nightmare, and you can't get a liquor license without it) and then your license.

Good luck though.

[and before folk all jump on the offended bus, trying to do this in Glasgow is a bloody nightmare as well, this will just be more difficult as it is all in a different language.]

The key to great food. Keep it simple, local and work the flavours well (there is a great documentary based in a swiss lab about flavour combinations a few years back)...and you can't go wrong!

Life / How much Zloty to have an average life in Poland? [98]

You can get by on next to nothing. Fair enough, at the moment I am hardly living an exuberant lifestyle. But I am eating and living in decent conditions. And keep in mind I don't even have a wage yet. I lived happily enough in Krakow on about 2000pln a month. I am planning on earning more than that in my new career...which should lead to a good number of nights out and a very comfortable life for between 3-4k a month. It depends the lifestyle you want to lead...I can easily spend 1000pln over a weekend...but you don't need to live life to that sort of excess, and if you do, it's not your bank balance you should worry about!

But about how well does one have to know the other person before, say, a foreigner can naturally switch from 'Pan Bryszewski' to 'Jakob' to 'Kubek' etc..., especially with a male, without being miscontrued either as a homosexual or just plain rude?

Not sure about most people...but I was introduced to a former boss as Kuba...it was only after a week I realised it was short for Jakub.

Just be street smart. Also, where are you from (to the OP), depending on what you are used to it could be very different. Basically if you are in a city then treat it like any city, don't wander about unlit side streets alone late at night (not just because you are a girl...just shouldn't be done by anyone), don't get so drunk you don't know where you are...and just use street smarts. If you are going hiking and things, make sure you know your trail (a GPS is always a good idea, if not a compass) and let people know where you plan on going (look at that boy in Australia!).

Other than that, enjoy yourself! Poland is no more dangerous than anywhere else.

Polonia / Going to New Zealand ? [6]

I loved New Zealand when I was there. So many different types of scenery and so much culture.

I also agree on the fact that, if it were in Europe, most people would want to live there...it's half the world away and so many people I know from Scotland have worked and lived there at some point (myself included).

As for the peaceful aspect...I am sure, on the big scale of things, it is very peaceful. However I have never seen fights like I have seen on Oxford Terrace in Christchurch every Thursday and Friday night anywhere else in the world. Strangely Saturdays were peaceful enough. However seeing some of the street brawls I was shocked!

In saying that, I would love to go back!

I figure if nothing has changed by the beginning of september then I will just get the hell out of there. It will have been 3 months by then, would I be wrong to expect some change by then or is it still too soon?

She's been stringing you along and cheating on her boyfriend for 2 months already?

Earlier this week she cooked for me and has generally been her old self, which really surprised me. We was also joking around today and she said something about other girlfriends, I asked her if she wanted me to find another one and she said no.

So she wants to have you ready and willing as a backup incase things don't go so well with the other boy. She wants to have her cake and eat it, get out of there man!

Something else I'm curious about is that today I noticed a scratch down the top of her arm which was also bruised. I asked her about this and she said she doesn't know what it was and only noticed it on Sunday, sounded very suspicious to me.

By all means keep an eye, but keep in mind you are biased and could be reading more into this than there actually is. It totally depends the nature of the injury. Keep in mind that the top of the arm is most likely to be a grab or being shoved against something. And it is a common area just to bump (i often have bruises on the top of my arm that i never knew were there until someone else pointed them out). If you think he is beating her then, as I say, keep an eye out for other tell tale signs...but don't be blinkered by your feelings for her.

Oh, and get the hell out of there man!

Life / Poor people / street children in Poland? [34]

I have seen it in Scotland to an extent, but not as much as I have here. More often than not though, it is in the smoking shelter at a nightclub and someone will offer you a pound for a cigarette. I have never taken the pound, but it's more just the done thing.

However I have never seen it to such an extent as here. Walking along the planty I avoid smoking now because I know if I have a cigarette I will be approached by someone (i would say a bum, but just as often it's not) asking me. And I have very often been shouted at by said person for saying no as if I am in the wrong for not giving them a cigarette. And I have not seen that anywhere else.

Not me, always cold water or a soft drink. Always has to be something cold with my meal though. I use too much salt (i'm from the west coast of scotland...i can't help it) and so need something thirst quenching often during a meal.

Actually we could take your explanation of M&T and add to it whatever we wanted

Pretty much the same stuff, just the potatoes on the side instead of on top.

Actually the large glass of (has to be ice cold) milk is a damn good shout. As for tea, not a big fan at the moment (too hot for me) but in winter i go through the stuff by the gallon!

Do your family grow your own carrots(veg)? Any advice for us?

My Grandpa grows all his own veg, at my mum's house we would love to, but the mixture of small garden and big dog makes it difficult. But my Grandparents are not far off :) As for advice, lots of hard work will lead to better veg, double dig your garden and plant carefully in rows. Weed regularly and look after the place. It's simple enough, but tough!

Not a massive fan of mince

I am a massive fan of mince, my mum used to make it every Monday for dinner.

My mum's mince + tatties (apologies...i never measured any weights or stuff):
Mince
Onion
Carrots (fresh from the garden!)
Oxo Cube
Bisto
Water
Oil

Sweat off your onion in the oil in the bottom of a pan, add mince and brown. Add in carrots, oxo cube and a small amount of water (more can be added later if needed) and then your bisto to thicken and to taste. Bit of seasoning and bob's yer uncle.

As for tatties, just get some, peel, boil, add cream and butter then mash :D

yeah thats right, in the North its Bulmers and in the South its Magners.

Other way round...as Bulmers in the UK (as the North still is) is an English cider.

I meant the picture he posted way up the thread...however yours is also of the English Bulmers. They are similar (great bit of thievery marketing from the English) but there are slight differences in the label and the English one is slightly more bitter.

Bulmers/Magners is produced and founded by a company based in Clonmel, County Tipperary. It is Irish.

I am aware of this. However the reason for the name change to Magners in the UK is that there is already a company registered with that name. Bulmers Cider in the UK comes for Herefordshire and looks like the picture you posted.
