Life / ANYONE CELEBRATE ANDRZEJKI (ST ANDREW'S EVE)? [21]

Do you celebrate or know of anyone celebrating the traditional St Andrew's eve or Andrzejki the Polish way with fortune-telling games and suchlike? I wonder if the Polsih migrants have taken the custom with them to the British Isles and celebrate it in clubs and pubs?

My students celebrate it every year. Wax, shoes, palm reading, horoscopes, blind date, etc.

Travel / Is Poland mostly plains? [57]

that sacred possession they called "pole", which when translated means field or plain. Yes, the Poles and their land are one.

How true.
I am miserable because I don`t have any land and achieving unity with it is out of my reach. :):):)

Food / Polish cakes that hit the spot - Miodownik [40]

I am fond of cheese so cheesecake is my favourite. But it must be heavy and wet, not like these artificial-additives swollen cakes today.

Food / Chalwa - how is it called (Chatwa or something) [8]

Chałwa:

But it`s not an original Polish invention. Turkish, or Arab in general. Poland produces it, though. Different flavours: vanilla, chocolate, with nuts, etc.
I haven`t heard of anybody producing it at home.
You can buy it in every grocer`s/supermarket in Poland.

Work / Is Master Degree Important in Poland? [16]

Ok, but someone with a bachelor degree and 2 years experience will be more likely to be employed than someone with a masters degree and 0 years experience.

Bachelor degree holders who teach foreign languages, especially English, are employed in Polish schools but when there are two candidates, and one of them has a Master`s, he/she will be chosen by the head teacher, even without any previous experience. Simply speaking, 3 years of studying for a Bachelor compared to 5 years for Master makes some difference, doesn`t it?

Master holder will be chosen even though he/she gets a higher salary.

News / BOOZE & CAR TAX TO AID POLAND'S NEEDY? [23]

I wholeheartedly support the plan. The needy people need our help. I am glad I will be able to help out too, because I drink one bottle of vodka per year.

The problem is that I already drive 2.8 litre car and am not going to change it for the next few years. Or should I change it???

Life / Poles are very polite nation! [47]

There are similar types in Scotland but, generally, they will thank you for giving up your seat. Here, they expect you to so screw that. I paid my money, I was there first, I expect a seat. It is a contract after all.

I always give my seat to the elderly on those rare occasions I use the public transport (twice a year or so). That`s what a true Krakowian does. When he/she doesn`t, people know you are not from Krakow, not even Polish. :):):)

Life / Poles are very polite nation! [47]

Like everything in life it is only nice if people appreciate it.

I have a better strategy: I don`t expect any gratitude. Everything I do for other people is for a kiss only, sometimes even without it.

My reward will be in Heaven. I hope yours will be too. :):):)

Whatever, Sheep paid his money, he wants to sit, so what? Becareful of the old ; they'll live your youth for you.

The problem is that one day you will be old too and we`ll see how your attitude changes then. :):):)

All you are assholes!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Poland rocks our religion is Catholics and all other don't exist they are fake and made up like all you bashing Poland!!! And yes Poland is very polite nation!!

I like your attitude. :):):)

Why don`t you open your PM box which is closed now so that we could have a private chat about Polish Catholicism? :):):)

Life / Poles are very polite nation! [47]

;- D
Hey man, I see plenty of old guys in my neighborhood tramping through the snow to wherever. I plan to be one of them.

That`s good you don`t forget about it. I have already learnt one rule in life: what you give today is what you will get tomorrow. (licentia poetica by pawian!)

Now pregnant lady, different story, she'll get my seat.

Congratulations! When is the baby due?

My reward will be in Heaven.

Sounds to me like you expect gratitude...

I meant: earthly gratitude. :):)

No thank you, I am fine with out your heaven.

OK, there will be more room for me, then. :):):):):)

Life / Poles are very polite nation! [47]

You know, with comments to young attractive intelligent women like that, you will not get into your heaven.

You are mistaken. I didn`t make any comments, just asked a question. I will still get to my Heaven. :):):)

Yes, of clurse, just like a bar of chocolate.

yes, exactly.

taste was unfamiliar

Hmm, depends... I have had it since I was a child so it is familiar and likeable....

News / BOOZE & CAR TAX TO AID POLAND'S NEEDY? [23]

Out of interest, how is this policy going to work when (to the best of my knowledge!) many Polish schools don't have kitchens?

There are catering firms, at least in big cities. I don`t know about rural areas but the schools there have their kitchens on the premises....

Life / bed sheets in Poland...are them shorter ? [19]

That`s intentional. They believe that when you leave your feet out, you fall asleep faster. And then you are fast asleep all night long. :):):) And your roommates as well...

It is done to prevent students from partying and doing other silly things during night time.

Life / What do Polish children call Santa Claus? [12]

hahahahaha There was a misunderstanding! I thought the question was like that: What sort of person do Polish children call Santa? I supposed that someone believed this is Polish Santa:

Life / bed sheets in Poland...are them shorter ? [19]

:):):):) Let somebody else explain it to you, because it is midnight in Poland and I am turning in. I am going to leave my feet out to have a sound sleep and many nice dreams. Good night! :):):)

PS. Do you need to use bed sheets? Why don`t you follow this fashion? It was popular in Poland in 1980s..

Life / HAND-KISSING WANING IN POPULARITY? [29]

So, if my boyfriend, husband or just a guy I'm flirting with does it, it's OK. But in case of a stranger or nearly stranger, it's just disgusting. It makes me feel like running to the bathroom and washing my hand immediately, so I'm very happy this custom is fading away.

A stranger might become your boyfriend, husband or lover one day. Don`t put him off by running to the bathroom.:):):):):)

Polonius, imagine you meet some guy and he kisses your hand. Would you feel comfortable with it?

If a woman like you kissed my hand, I would feel very pleased. My wife much less. :):):)

Life / HAND-KISSING WANING IN POPULARITY? [29]

And I always was taught that lips should not even touch the hand.

That`s senseless. What is hand kissing for, then? I never assume a false pretence of a kiss. Everything I do, I do thoroughly.

Precisely. At most a mere brushing of the lips on the hand. Slobbering over hands is what dogs are for.

I always moisten my lips before kissing a lady`s hand. Wet kiss, so called. Traditionally Polish.

Life / bed sheets in Poland...are them shorter ? [19]

Polish people, or the ones that I know, do not sleep under sheets, under any circumstance. They only use one sheet to cover the mattress, and then sleep directly under the duvet/comforter, no matter the season or room temperature.

That`s normal, isn`t it? What do people do in other countries? Lie on one sheet and cover themselves with another? Strange..... I wouldn`t be able to sleep at all in such conditions....

o if you were to check into a Polish run hotel outside of a major city your are most likely to end up in a queen size bed, with no sheet, and 2 small duvets.

Come on, make up your mind, are sheets used in Poland or not?

Life / HAND-KISSING WANING IN POPULARITY? [29]

Well, that would explain why so few women extend their hands to be kissed nowadays.

No, they always come back for more after a traditional Polish wet kiss. Never have any woman refused to be kissed on her hand ...

Why not just lick it a while? yech.

Have you tried it out? And how was it? :):):)
