Food / Hot tea in Poland; where can I find it? [46]

This is my first post and the question about tea is what made me register. I have never been a tea drinker, but found in Poland that I really liked it. When I asked what I was drinking, so that I could shop for some in the grocery store, my Polish hosts laughed and identified it as Lipton Yellow Label -- probably about the least expensive tea to buy in the store. Lipton Yellow Label can't be purchased in the US, at least any place that I've been.

I have taught English as a volunteer in elementary schools in eastern Poland. At this level, no meal is served at school. Children eat breakfast at home, bring second breakfast in their backpack, and eat obiad in the middle of the afternoon after they return home. Certainly this can be different in other places in Poland or at higher levels of school, but this is what I've observed.

Graham crackers in Poland? I've not been able to find them. We enjoy making S'mores during summer language camps. Chocolate is easy to find in Poland, marshmallows are yet impossible, but no luck in grocery stores I've been to finding graham crackers. I'd surely like to hear more.

For visiting the Salt Mine with an 84 year old, be aware one walks down, thankfully, hundreds of steps. The trip up is by elevator. Just be aware of this.

I will be flying to Warsaw from the United States via Amsterdam in June. Now with the change of border controls since my last visit in 2007, do I go through immigration and customs in Amsterdam or Warsaw? I'm surely hoping it's Warsaw so I don't have to retrieve and then check luggage again between landing in Amsterdam and flying to Warsaw. Any advice will be appreciated.

I'm far from perfect, but how I learned: I stumbled upon a group setting up for a concert or something like that in Warsaw. For the sound check it was: jeden, dwa, trzy. Now I carry that in my head.

Thank you for the clarification. I hoped it would that way. For example, last summer I went to Lviv after being in Poland for one month. When I flew back to Warsaw to catch my flight to the states, I simply followed the path for international connections and didn't have to go through Polish immigration and customs and then back out. But I want to say, that when I landed in Warsaw I felt like I had come back home. It was so fun to know exactly where the book store was in the airport, for example, just like I know my local airport. Thank you to all the people in Poland who have made me feel like I have a second home -- from a person who has no Polish roots at all, but has learned to love and honor this country.

I have been in Poland 4 times as a volunteer teaching English to children and teens, and coming back again this year for the same reason. It has been my pleasure to interact with teachers, university students, farmers, and shopkeepers. It is the spirit of moving forward, of trying to make a better Poland -- defined by the terms of the Polish, not me, the commitment I see families having for their children, --that keeps me coming back as a volunteer, and paying for the experience of volunteering, too. I can't believe how much Poland has changed since my first experience in 2002 and I'm looking forward with great interest to see where Poland is in 2013!

I've seen the recent versions of several, including this one. On a scale of 1 - 10, most I've seen get a 6. You surely do not have to give up tea in Poland. While things have changed a lot in larger cities in the last couple of years, one may have a challenge in some locations to find good coffee, but tea is everywhere. Learn the word, herbata.

And Poland meals include wonderful fruit juices. My favorite that I can't buy in the state is black current.

And also in traditional Polish cooking there are marvelous fruit juice drinks made from fruits such as fresh cherries in the summer.

When someone said brussel sprouts aren't served in Poland, I was going to protest. I learned to eat them in Poland. The place I stay in Poland, Reymontowka, makes these into a gourmet food. If you are looking at Wisla in an English alphabet, then you are not seeing the £ letter is Wis£a. It is really prounounced Viswa. And now I can't see the word without memories too. Walking along the river is Kazimierz Dolny, the view from the top of library at Warsaw University, or going over it on one of the beautiful new bridges in Warsaw!

I was in Krakow in 2002 and loved it. I was in Krakow again in 2006 and thought it too crowded. Then after I picked up one of Siekenwitz's books ( I know I spelled it wrong, sorry) that begins with visitors going to Krakow in the 1300s and they too are complaining that Krakow is getting too crowded and out of control!

Look for Polytechnic in Warsaw.

But beware that Polish computer science may be at a different level. This summer I will be teaching English to high school students in high school that offers Cisco training. This level of computer science is very unusual in the states.
