Law / Internet Banking in Poland [9]

Does anyone have any experience with virtual banking on the internet here in Poland? Any recommendations? I would like to transfer my dollars to Poland and convert them to złoty, so anyone with this experience could be very helpful - a simple savings account will suffice. Thanks!

Before posting, I did such a search to no avail. In fact, a second search of the keywords "internet bank" now brings up one thread - this one!

Law / Business plan needed for residency requirements - suggestions? [6]

I am an American English teacher who must create a business to satisfy residency requirements here in Poland. One of the requirements is to provide a business plan - however, I have never even seen one let alone written one. Any experiences from members on this forum? How detailed does it need to be? Are there any models I can cite online? Thanks to all with constructive input!

(BTW - I have sought TEFL business plans online and have searched "business plan" on this site, both to no avail...)

Law / Business plan needed for residency requirements - suggestions? [6]

I did search Google before posting this thread - all I found were plans for larger businesses which require employees, advertising cost projections, future earnings reports, etc. However, I was not able to find a basic plan for an individual who will be teaching at a language school and nothing else - that is what I seek.

Law / Business plan needed for residency requirements - suggestions? [6]

Thread attached on merging:
Business in Poland - do I need income from three sources?

I was recently told that the business I plan to create in Poland will require at least three sources of income to stay legal. Since I am creating this business solely to remain in the country and teach at a language school, I understand this regulation as needing at least three language schools to hire me part-time - is this true? If so, can anyone help me understand ways to get around this if I only have one job offer?

Also - one of my residency requirements is to show a business plan, but I am unable to find any suitable templates online. Can anyone point me in the right direction? The plans online seem to be for large businesses with employees, overhead, etc. - I am but a simple teacher trying to eek out a living by providing a service. I hope there is a simple plan after which I can model mine.

Thanks for any and all constructive comments...

News / Poland- Visa Waiver Program [55]

I have been told that a primary reason is the relatively large population of Poland - much larger than the other European countries listed. This apparently is a threat to American workers (I don't necessarily believe this, but it is what I have heard). I came here from Chicago which has a HUGE population of Poles, but I was aware of only a relative handful of Czechs AND Lithuanians living there - not concrete evidence, mind you, but simply a real-life observation.

As an American, I am embarrassed by this apparent oversight. If America can ask Poland for permission to build a defense shield here, why can't we reciprocate a bit and allow Poles to freely travel to the States???

Food / Where can I find authentic kebabs in Krakow [14]

When I lived in Germany, the kebabs sold in many small restaurants were wonderful - made by actual Turks, I am told. However, I find the kebabs in Krakow to be nothing like those I enjoyed in Berlin - any idea where I can find the good stuff here? Thanks!

News / Zloty goes down, good news for ex-pats in Poland [18]

Should I ask for a increase in the salary before start ?

Would you offer to decrease your salary if this trend was reversed? Say, if the zloty was UP 20% against the Euro? I kinda doubt it...

Law / May I keep personal money in a Polish business bank account? [3]

I realize this might be a stupid question, but is it OK to keep private funds in my business account at a Polish bank? Because of the current exchange rate, I have been transferring funds from my bank in America and want to keep the new zlotych in a Polish bank.

This isn't against the law in America, but I thought I would check the rules in Poland - thanks!

Life / Is there an iTunes Music Store for those living in Poland? [11]

I noticed in the latest Apple 'Terms of Conditions' that one must actually be on America soil to download files from the US iTunes Music Store - is this a new requirement or have I simply missed it in the past? I have an American address on file and use an American credit card when making purchases, but apparently this is not enough anymore.

Man, I rely heavily on music, videos, and iPhone apps from this site - is there a Polish version available?

Life / Is there an iTunes Music Store for those living in Poland? [11]

It just occured to me that you could use a proxy server to access American website. One proxy that comes to my mind is (www-goes-here)hidemyass.com . On that website, type in iTunes shop's address in the box and you will appear to Apple's server as someone logging in from the US (i think that's an American proxy).

Is this possible with iTunes? The program automatically connects to the iTunes Music Store - is there a way to redirect? Thanks!

Law / Using Allegro in Poland - payment / transfer / rules / fees [18]

Merged: Confusion over the basic rules of Allegro

I am looking to purchase something on Allegro and have been in touch with a seller advertising an item of interest to me. He told me that he listed a reserve amount (the minimum he will accept for the item) on the page of my item - however, I cannot find it anywhere on the page. Perhaps my understanding of Polish is holding me back...

If this reserve amount is, indeed, not listed, then is it OK for the seller to ignore the final bid if it doesn't meet this minimum amount? If so, what is the point of a bidding process that will go for naught if we the buyers aren't aware of this amount? This seems a bit counterproductive - am I wrong?

Thanks for all constructive input and education regarding Allegro!

Law / Using Allegro in Poland - payment / transfer / rules / fees [18]

"cena minimalna nie została osiągnięta"

Thanks! I'll watch for that now...

Why you want to know the minimal price?

It's simple - so I won't waste my time bidding on an item that I feel is overpriced. On the item that interests me, several people have been stepping over each other bidding on it for over a week. However, with one day to go on this item, the top bid is currently about one-third of the minimum price acceptable to the seller. This seems to be an incredible waste of time.

In my opinion, a lot of people's time would be saved if Allegro vendors made their minimum prices known to all.

News / Is Poland ready for the swine fever stuff? [59]

Read your history, folks - in 1918, the Spanish flu pandemic started out exactly in this way: a few mild cases in the spring...then fizzling out...then reemerging much stronger and deadlier the following fall. When it ultimately swept across the globe (including Arctic regions and many remote Pacific islands), it ended up killing more than 50 million people worldwide. For what it's worth, the 1918 flu was also a swine flu of the H1N1 variety.

I have as much contempt for the world press as others on this forum - however, I think I'll withhold judgement until this whole thing plays itself out...

News / Is Poland ready for the swine fever stuff? [59]

No vaccine is 100% effective, especially if the intended target mutates into something deadlier. As I understand it, once a virus evolves, vaccines for the original strain are more or less useless against the new mutation.

Evidently, the Spanish flu virus mutated to become much more virulent over a short period of time in 1918, so any vaccine that could have been produced at the onset of that bug would have had very little effect stemming the eventual pandemic that killed millions.

Travel / The best way to travel from Krakow To Budapest - early July? [4]

eurolinespolska.pl/index.php?temat=newsy.php&lang=en&id=91&idp=2

105 PLN round trip - and in a comfortable bus. The trip is only offered on Wednesdays and Saturdays (if I remember correctly), so it may not coincide with your schedule. However, if you can make it work, I highly recommend it! I took this trip in the spring and had a very easy ride both ways...

Life / What should be done to make life in Poland better and more enjoyable? [94]

On the subject of cashiers in shops, I agree - the lack of respect for customers is at the top of my list of things that should be changed in Poland.

Having said that, one thing still confuses me about their behavior: if these people are so rude to their customers, why do I never see them send a person with too many items out of the 10-items-or-less aisles? I see this all the time in Tesco and Carrefour - a person with 14 items in the express aisle - but the cashiers never seem to unload on them. Has anyone else noticed this?

Life / Krakow Trams - what do you think of the stop announcers voice? [5]

I was on the 8 tram this morning - the children's voices have been replaced by adults!!!!! I too became irritated by that gibberish that came out of the loudspeakers - this stunt seems more reminiscent of something that might occur in America, not in seemingly-level-headed Poland.

News / JEW YOUTH SHOULD CLEAN UP THEIR ACT IN POLAND [420]

The international community of those times must be held to account. NOT these times.

I agree wholeheartedly, Seanus. Awhile back, I moved to Berlin much to the chagrin of my grandfather (who fought in WWII). He was absolutely livid that I could do this after all the 'evil' (his word) the Germans had spread in the world. My argument was 'that was then, this is now' - punishing a society for the sins of their fathers seemed silly to me then and still today.

Remember the past - yes; learn from the past - absolutely; punish a society for sins from the past - absolutely not.

Life / Parking on the sidewalks in Poland - why is it allowed? [8]

One of the most interesting aspects of Polish life to me is cars parked on the sidewalks - it was probably the biggest surprise to me when I first visited this country 6 years ago. Is this a Polish thing or does it occur in other European countries as well?

I guess I can understand it in the larger city city centers and, perhaps, the older parts of town, but this seems to occur everywhere. I live in an area near the outskirts of Kraków which has plenty of elbow room - however, I must constantly walk on the streets because entire lengths of sidewalk are blocked by parked cars. This area was developed about 5 years ago and is up to date in regards to street widths, parking, etc. - however, the drivers ignore the "lines" that delineate the available parking spaces and pull their cars up onto the sidewalks. Meanwhile, scores of parking spaces under the buildings remain vacant (no doubt because of their cost, but come on...paying for parking is one of the many burdens of owning a car).

I understand that space is at a premium in Poland, but this seems a bit ridiculous. I came here from Chicago - a very large city with severe parking limitations. However, it is absolutely illegal to park on the sidewalks there (and I believe throughout America). I remember spending up to an hour some nights trying to find street parking in my neighborhood - if I would have parked on a sidewalk, my car would have been ticketed or towed the next morning.

Does anyone have any input on this subject? In a pedestrian society such as Poland, one would think that keeping the sidewalks clear would be of greater importance than it seems to be. Not withstanding the inconvenience issue, it is simply not safe for those of us who choose to walk to our destinations...

Travel / Kraków to Stockholm, Riga, and Helsinki - any suggestions? [19]

We are planning a flight to Stockholm in August...then we would like to slowly work our way back to Kraków via boats, buses, and trains. Along the way, we would like to visit Riga and Helsinki (as well as Tallin and Vilnius, if possible).

Does anybody have any experience with a similar itinerary who can shed some light on what we can expect along the way? I am especially interested in finding the best method for crossing the Baltic Sea. Also - any recommendations for other cities to see? Any input would be greatly appreciated - thanks!

Life / Tram to Ikea - Krakow [4]

Take the 8 tram towards Bronowice Małe and get off at Balicka Viadukt (last stop before the end). Then walk back across the bridge and go down the steps to your right...the 172 and 173 buses will be available at the bus stop at the bottom of the stairs.

Ikea will be near Conrada - it's the second stop once you hop on one of the buses.
