Feedback / How come we can not delete our own posts ? And other questions... [26]

remember when i mentioned user friendlier? here is one of the examples i was thinking of. i'll point to others as i see them mentioned. they are all my personal opinion. others may not find same features friendlier.

If posters were able to delete their own posts, do you think it would be user friendlier? I do not think so -- it would create CHAOS instead.

What if you deleted the post after I answered it, what if thousands of users deleted some posts, would you enjoy reading or participating in such incomplete and random discussions? I'm actually very surprised by your argumentation since someone who thinks logically could easily anticipate what it would be like if it was possible to delete posts.

Which is why I have an entire usless thread to my name. I didn't know the file was too big until I posted it, so no one knows what the fek the thread is about

It would be a miracle if everyone who will try to post a file in the future knows how to check the file size before trying to upload it (even though it's very simple), so I'm sure it will be useful for these members.

Feedback / How come we can not delete our own posts ? And other questions... [26]

What is the size of the pictures you can upload?

* JPEG/JPG - maximum of 60 Kb
* GIF - maximum of 60 Kb
* PNG - maximum of 60 Kb
* BMP - maximum of 60 Kb

And why does it have to have at least 5 characters in the text?

To prevent posting useless messages.

if you write the text it posts and the pictures dont comes up with errors :/

If the size of the picture is more than allowed, it will show an error message.

Also how come we can not delete our own posts ?

Because you cannot return to the past.

Feedback / Text that is unsuccessfully posted is too easily lost. [54]

It's strange that I'm not the only one to have noticed the problem.

The strangest thing is that those who have "also noticed the problem" have never actually tested if it was really a problem. They just smelled an opportunity to throw their stones, but unfortunately for them it was no smoking gun. I'm still hoping to hear from them to answer my questions..

Feedback / Text that is unsuccessfully posted is too easily lost. [54]

Only the day before yesterday, I tried to PM someone, rather than presenting me with what I shall from now on call "The Zgubiony message".

There could be some unrelated reasons. With a script when something works and is not changed, it will always work the same. Maybe you installed some software, your windows/mac/linux system file/s were updated, etc. It happens to all computer users from time to time it's normal in most cases.

It just seems you tried to pass on the problem on someone else : Regarding PM nothing has changed, regarding back button - only one change for IE was done. But if you're using Firefox no change applied to you. So yesterday there were 2 problems, today there are no problems - even though nothing was changed.

Anyway, now I know it works for you too (otherwise I'd be still trying to figure it out) so thanks for your support.

Feedback / Text that is unsuccessfully posted is too easily lost. [54]

It has always let me type messages to people whether their inbox is full or not.

If you have some custom browser settings how it could relate to the general issue. Next time you change a screen saver and will claim PF is the culprit:? Anyone else can write a private message to this user? - for example: ?action=userinfo&user=985

My text never comes back after clicking back to the previously viewed page.

So there's probably something wrong with your computer system or web browser.

i do this all the time if i have an issue but here the text used to disappear.

You are referring to the past or the present time?

Feedback / Text that is unsuccessfully posted is too easily lost. [54]

An error page appears, giving you the option of editing your last post or returning to the thread.
Anything you had typed has gone.

Yes, that's possible to happen. But it's a very rare case. Avoiding posting off-topic messages may help. It's not a fun activity to move off-topic posts to random chat and do it dozens of times a day..

It takes 30 minutes (not an hour) to repeat post in the same thread IF you are the last poster in this thread.

But even if you are the last poster and post a message within 30 minutes and use Firefox, Opera, Chrome, or Safari browsers, you can click on the "Return" link and the text won't be lost. IE8 should fix this bug too.

Even though I've just changed something and it should work correctly on IE too (you may test it now).

in a thread or PM

Not sure how it's related to PM. If the recipient is over-quota, you will not be able to even start writing a message to him/her because you won't even see a post form then.

Your so right, if you type a bible on a subject and accidently hit backspace or something you lose the whole text when you click back.

Eureka! :) That's how all web browsers work and it has nothing to do with the PF forum.

if you click 'Post' and it does not post and takes you to another page telling you it cannot be posted

What exactly does it tell you (error message)?

Maybe Admin could have fun installing some new feature that solves all these problems. He might not want to, but a bet he'd enjoy a bit of tinkering!

IF you talk about inability to post a follow-up post within 30 minutes if you are the last poster, that's actually a feature in itself. :) And it's a good one - who needs "bump" and meaningless posts anyway..

Always happens with a time consuming long text. It's like the post function gets fed up with waiting.

It depends on your Internet connection. I've just posted a test text containing 25,000 characters (5000+ words) and it posted it (doing text filtering in the meantime) within 3 seconds without any problem.

Some people are using their clipboards for other things at the same time. It is not practical. Posting should be simple. Why should it be made more difficult or complicated than it needs to be?

It's simple - if you happen to forget you are the last poster, just click on the "Return" link or back in your web browser to have the text ready to copy or save for the next time if you need it.

With PMs it is particularly annoying. I once wrote someone a huge long message, all of which I lost due to her inbox being full. Since then, I have always remembered to copy long PMs, but I don't always remember. I think copying every post and every messge is just a little too much to demand.

You've probably confused forums. On PF you won't even see the post form if the recipient's Inbox is full - you will only receive a warning message, but won't be able to even start writing.

What I would like is to find out whether something can be done to make the forum just a little bit more user-friendly.

Do a real test and post results here as I described above.

When your mail box is full (30) it could tell you in red, just to stand out?

It now tells you in red + blinking graphic. It appears on top of the page of every page so it's hard to miss it.

So I keep reading. How about this idea: find more ways to make this forum slightly more tricky to use.
Then think about this idea: find a few ways to make it a little bit easier to use.

I guess some users got actually spoiled on how easy and logical this forum is to use. Try other forums and let me know how easier they are to use :.

So you know that I know how to get around this problem. Getting around the problem is not the issue. Solving it is the issue.

Do you have auto or home insurance? If you happen to post a message, there may be a few situations you cannot control: the power in your house goes off, you spill coffee on your keyboard, database is being restarted, you accidentally close the window, etc. Same with auto or home insurance - why do you still buy it? Because you cannot control everything - unless you solved the problem of drunk drivers and arsonists in your area.

if the forum isn't easy or full of bugs... the posters will dwindle..

You're right -- and in this case your "if" is only a theoretical assumption because in spite of your bitterness it doesn't want to apply to PF.

there are plenty more user friendly forums out there.

Please show us examples, not theory.

holy crap he fixed it:

... so after several hours someone actually tested it? It's been working like that for a year now.

The above remedies text lost after Back button is clicked in the browser

No text is lost after back button without any special settings..

Well done Admin on a swift job well done. :)

Good to hear from another bitter theorist :)

Feedback / How to create a relevant "anchor text" when linking to other sources [8]

Another way (I personally prefer this way) is to:

1. Write a text.
2. Highlight the part that you want to be linked.
3. Click on the "URL Link" button:

URL Link button

4. Paste the URL.

Same procedure applies when linking to images where the "Image Link" button:

URL Link button

works in the same way.

Feedback / Polish Forums Checker [41]

I was just think, who does use them, can we get a show of hands.

Maybe some regular posters should first learn how to use the very basic functions, like creating a hyperlink with a custom text, for example. Sadly, many regular posters still don't get it, maybe it's not that simple after all..

Not to say the Checker isn't easy to use, though - just the opposite.

Feedback / more discussion button takes me to the home page [21]

Are you serious ? You have my IP address.

I meant from which web page, not geographical location :). This link appears on at least 3 different pages.

There is a way around this...go to the top and click on latest discussions, it's the second one in, next to unanswered posts, then on the top left above subject, you can either click on the little arrows, or click on page 2

That's actually how I do it most of the times too :

It's at the bottom of the home page.

That helped :)

I wasn't asking for a way around, I use this link as well, we were just reporting a dead link, which seems to be still dead despite of what the Admin claims in his earlier post

It's not dead anymore, your snap-shot helped too.

Feedback / Private message not working with a "highlighted text" [17]

I put it in my spam folder, and that will not allow me to send a highlighted message from that mail.

You cannot copy formatted text to a regular text box like a web form.. It's not MS Word or something :

Unless you mean your pesonal MSN Messenger, that's another story, we are not Microsoft..

Feedback / Using Opera browser but the Polish characters don't work. [11]

You can try in Opera:
1. right-click on the page
2. click on "Edit Site Preferences..."
3. under General tab in the "Group" section select "Central European" and in Encoding it should be ISO 8859-2
4. click OK

Feedback / How do I catch the attention of a moderator [13]

How do I catch the attention of a moderator for a casual enquiery.

This is rather a newbie question, but PM him/her should do the trick.

Seeing/not seeing a moderator online won't guarantee the question will be answered on the same minute or hour.

Feedback / Mods: why is my request removed each time? [36]

I cannot find it, either where I left it, or in My Threads.

I'm sure "My threads" shows the "Random Chat Thread."

I've checked my message box in case there is a message saying why these have been removed, but no message.

OK, but the question is if you have read the TOS and rules page as it was requested by PM and in the post form area before posting your first message..?

I am completely baffled, since there was nothing illegal, pornographic or objectionable in my message.

A message doesn't have to be "illegal, pornographic or objectionable" to qualify for deletion or move to the Random Chat thread.

I did follow the link, I didn't see any reason. Just a long list of nonsensical, random, irrelevant postings which are just pointless chit-chat.

It so happens that this long list has actually been gathered from all other "legitimate" threads (these random messages have to be manually moved by moderators; otherwise many threads would be a long list of "nonsensical, random, irrelevant postings" with meaningless and random thread titles).

What they did to me really was unfair, especially considering, as bohobabe says, there are some really nauseatingly racist threads, plus an awful lot of totally irrelevant threads trying to mend the relationships of people we have never met!

I believe those who post in the Relationship section may claim the same about translation messages.

With hundreds of posts a day it's not possible to address each individual member, so if the message or thread landed in the Random Chat, it means there was something wrong with that and reading the rules will usually help to find the reason.

Feedback / "My Threads" - Can they be deleted or refreshed? [5]

Can the threads in "My Threads" be deleted or refreshed so that if you are a long term member you don't end up with pages and pages of "My Threads"? :)

Well, the whole purpose of "My Threads" was to list all the threads you've participated in and they will stay there unless the particular topic (usually from the Off-topic thread indeed) is deleted. MyThreads can be sorted by the latest reply or the newest topic, so it's easy to track.

This is a polish forum. We should be allowed to speak the mother tongue.

You can talk in Polish in the Off-topic forum as well as in the Practice your Polish forum.

Life / Polish Driving Licence. [314]

Of course it is illegal to obtain a driving license by any other means than taking a test and passing an exam at an authorized location and posters and readers should be aware of that.

Feedback / How to create a relevant "anchor text" when linking to other sources [8]

A lot of members may still not know it's possible to use custom words (different from just the default: URL) when linking to other websites. Using custom "anchor text" (or "link label") that is closely related to the destination page is both more relevant and useful for the reader.

If you look at these two links: polishforums.com - URL and PolishForums - website about Poland, you will probably be more likely to click on the latter link; those who are not interested won't have to waste their time and click on the link either just to determine they are not interested.

In order to create an anchor text, all you have to do is to write and highlight the word/s you want to be included in the link FIRST, and THEN click on the "URL link" icon on top of the form and type in or paste the web address.

Of course, the anchor text must be closely related to the content of the landing page so that it is not confusing to the reader.

PS. If you don't want to create "anchor text", it's better to just copy-paste straight link than 'URL'.
