Life / Polish Kids - Polish speaking? Bilingual? only English? [56]

I live in Australia and I've met one other polish family with children.
The son, around my age didn't know much polish and talked english at home.

I guess I'm lucky, because at home from an early age it was nothing but polish.
My grammar isn't good but on the plus side my pronounciation and understanding is good.
I can even pronounce tongue twisters if I say them very slowly.

I think it's a shame to lose once's heritage and I really hope that if I have children I'll be able to pass polish on.

Language / Pan/Pani/Panie name variation [9]

What are the rules when using someone's name when refering to them as Pan/Pani/Panie.
I think the name Maria changes to Pani Mario?
I want to know in a more general sense how to change the name endings.

Language / Uses of otóż and lecz [5]

I'm puzzled by the exact usage of otóż and lecz.
From listening to polish speech I'm guessing that lecz is something like because?

Life / Polish PAYG sim/Network [24]

Merged: Cell Phones - Getting a sim card in Poland

Maybe this has been mentioned before so I apologize.
Can I just go into the shop, pay the price for a prepay sim card and that's it?
Do I need to provide any details such as name, address so on?

I'm assuming all of the providers in Poland use sim cards.

Also out of my curiosity do phones in Poland allow you to type ąśęółżźćń in a text message?

Language / Uses of otóż and lecz [5]

That clears the understanding for lecz, thanks but otóż?

I've heard it used in a reply to a question and also like this,
Otóż kiedyś na spotkaniu z policją padło słowo........
Couldn't you just say it without the otóż?

Cool, I'd like to have a phone that could write those letters.
No real need I suppose but I'd find it to be cool.

Genealogy / Anyone Else 1/2 Polish??? [58]

I was born in New Zealand and moved to Australia at the age of 6.
My parents are both polish and polish is spoken at home since their english isn't that good.
I sometimes have to read english and translate it into polish.

I can understand polish well (just a few hiccups on words) and speak it well enough, just that my grammar isn't all too good.

Language / Żeby and Aby, versus in polish [4]

What's the difference between Żeby and Aby?
Żeby mieć konia to trzeba.....
Aby mieć konia to trzeba....

The meaning to me sounds the same, yet I want to know when to use what word and why.

Also what's the Polish equivalent for the English vs(versus).
Thanks

USA, Canada / Looking for Polish gay friends in USA [20]

I don't think there are any differences apart from same sex attractions.
But I think it's about meeting people who are gay, to relate to them.
Most gays go through the same thing, the rejection and so on.
Might feel more comfortable to be open?

Or maybe there are other more physical reasons?
I don't know.
It matters on the individual.

Yes there's the gay functions and culture as well.
Again that's an individual preference, not all follow it.

Oh actually on gay night clubs.
At least in Australia some straight people do go to them.
It's about the music and atmosphere.

USA, Canada / Looking for Polish gay friends in USA [20]

Bisexual/Gay/Straight are really labels in my opinion.
I don't know about totally switching from one to another.
Bi is someone who is attracted to both sexes.
You said the person noticed they had no same sex attraction so they switched and called themselves straight.

If they honestly have no attraction to men, then I'd say they're straight.

I think this switching goes both ways really.
You can't claim that people can switch, unless you can?
I know I can't, so I take it that people can't switch.

You can lie to yourself and everyone around you that you've switched.
I just think accept attraction the way it is and accept yourself for who you are.

From what I know, researchers are unsure at the moment what causes homosexuality.
There are theories floating around about it.

Quoting: jareck
can i ask, what do you think the health implications are of such a relation in temrs of male to male and the psychological in temrs of female to female...

if both are tested and clean, i dont see any

I agree, why should there be any if they are both tested and clean?
Psychological?
I don't understand, would a male to female contact have psychological damage?
Obviously not so why should there be any with male-male/female-female?

Travel / Polish Customs (Odprawa Celna) [8]

Hi,

I'm planning on travelling to Poland from Australia.
I was thinking of taking some fruit but I'm wondering if I can go through customs with it.
Is there a website english or polish that will state what I can take.
The only thing I've found is about cigarettes and alcohol but that isn't relevant to me.
Is that the only limitation?

Thanks

Travel / Age requirements when going out to clubs in Poland [13]

I was wondering what i need to verify my age in clubs in Poland.
I don't have a drivers license and I'm wondering what I need and if what I have is sufficient.
I don't want to be carrying around a passport.
I have a Australian 18+ Card, It shows my age, a photo and has the Australian coat of arms shining through, also through a blue light it glows through.

Is that enough?
I do have an expired passport as well.....

Travel / Age requirements when going out to clubs in Poland [13]

Here in Australia it's different.
Outside every club we have bouncers at the door who check IDs.
Pubs and Bars would check your ID when you go buy alcohol.

It will be really interesting to compare lots of things that I take as 'normal' here in Australia.
Coin operated toilets. lol What a weird thought that is, I've seen timed toilets though.
