Maybe Media Markt? Can have a sale or sth. The little mom and pop shops might be pricy. Maybe you can try Ebay too. Good luck.

Thanks for the information.

One other question. Laptops have Wi-Fi for internet connection I believe. Are the places (towns, villages,) in Poland where I could not get connected.

Life / Buying computer system in Poland [20]

Does anyone have a HP Pavilion Laptop they use. I'm wondering if it is a good one to buy. I've read the HP Compaq's are not so good but haven't read any reports about the HP Pavilions.

if Polish is not your mother tongue, get your computer in North America. it will all be in English, and not have to get all the software to make changes.

Excellent point nauczyciel. Polish is not my mother tongue..........but I am learning it:-)

Life / Shipping or taking goods with you on the plane to Poland [10]

Any experiences with shipping or any good ideas about logging a years worth of stuff?

My wife and I moving to Poznan in 3 weeks. On June 17th we shipped 42 boxes of our belongings to Poland using Doma Shipping. We've used them before with no problems but were only shipping one or two boxes.

Travel / Rental car and prices in Poland [12]

Merged: Car Rental prices in PL

Does anyone have any idea what the cost for renting a car in Poland is? I've checked the prices from the airport in Poznan and it seems like $100 USD a day. Can that be right?

Thanks Grzegorz.

Most likely we will buy a car once we arrived and settled in Poznań. Do you know any websites for buying a GOOD used car?

News / Weak US dollar in Poland and other countries... [180]

I have to agree with Zgubiony, a few days doesn't make a difference. I have been watching this rise and fall since since "03 and the decline is defintely downward. This decline has a great bearing on us, my wife and I, since we are moving to Poland and will be using our Social Security for living.

But I was talking about the price of housing going down. Maybe Bubba could have some input into this.

Work / How hard is it for an American in Poland? I'm computer networking IT / salary [12]

Smooth..........I can't give you a success story yet as we are just moving to Poland from the Chicago area. I am of Polish descent but still have had to go through the process of getting all papers in order to apply for temporary residency. There are a lot of hoops to go through and if you are shipping many things to Poland you must prepare early. You can follow my story on.........david-polanddavid.blogspot.

Life / Expats in Poland: Are you going to live in Poland long or short term? [65]

Hi Lonman,
My wife and i just moved to Poznań, 6 weeks ago. We're retired.
The reasons we moved are........
1.ALL my ancestors are from Poland.
2.I have a large family in Poland I never knew about.
3.We very much like Poland and, of course, it's people.
4. Even with the huge cost of living changes since Poland joined the EU, it's still cheaper here than the U.S.
5.We plan on staying.

I keep a daily blog since we moved here with observations, prices, papers we needed to make the move, problems and solutions, comments, etc, etc.. Maybe it could be of some use to you.

Life / HELP WITH BUYING A COMPUTER IN POLAND [20]

I have a new laptop I bought in the U.S. before I moved to Poland, with Windows Vista. I have to agree the Vista OS has bugs and you're better starting with XP. I've worked through the bugs but it's taken some time. The laptop is an HP, "17" and my first. I use FTM for genealogy,Paint Shop Pro and a few other softwares that wouldn't work on Vista until i searched for solutions. Stay with XP until the bugs are out of Vista.

Life / Living In Poland For The Expat [67]

My wife and I moved to Poznań a year and a half ago from Chicago. The reason is family. We love Poland and don't find the weather much different from that in Chicago. It can get boring if you don't make an effort to get involved with people outside of your flat. I do some private teaching of English and that gives me the contact.

The roads in many places are not good and travel time takes longer that you would think. Plus, the drivers have little regard for other drivers. We make it a point to go somewhere outside of Poznań every weekend just so we can get to know Poland better. We don't forsee a reason to ever leave. I have a permanent resident card now and that is almost as good as being a citizen as far as health insurance. Every individual is different so I can only talk about our experience so far. I write a blog each day about our life in Poznań since we arrived. polanddavid.blogspot.com. People are friendly but we have found more rude ones here than in the U.S. We were very surprised by that.

Life / Has your move to Poland been successful??? [15]

My wife and I retired and moved to Poznań two years ago from the Chicago area. We are very happy with the decision. I have a large extended family here that I never knew about and this has given me to the opportunity to get to know some of them. We love Poznań and the life we have created here. We do no plan to leave.
