Travel / Anyone been to Zakopane? [36]

I'm just back from skiing in Zakopane. Had a blast!

I'd love to go back for the week preceding Easter.

My question is: Will there be still some snow to ski on in April, do you think?

Life / Is it expensive to give birth in Poland? [26]

Why is in necessary in Poland to have to bribe doctors? That sounds very corrupt and old-fashioned. Is this because of the Communist past? Is it a similar scenario in other former Eastern bloc countries?

In the UK and Ireland, a doctor would be almost insulted if you offered him/her a bribe, as they would see this as you questioning their professionalism!!

Life / Healthcare In Poland For An EU Citizen [10]

I know when my mother lived in France, the British government paid for her healthcare because she was still on UK benefits. But I don't receive anything like that, and have not paid UK taxes since I left England 3 years ago.

Healthcare in France is generally free anyway (and very good too, from what I've heard).

Law / Applying for Russian VISA in Poland [7]

James, have a look at waytorussia.net/RussianVisa/HowToApply.html

It states: "Normally, you can apply for a Russian visa at the country where you live. But if you're traveling at the moment, for example, you can apply anywhere else in the world, unless, you're from Germany or some Asian countries (except Japan). The nationals of Germany and of some Asian countries (except Japan) can only apply for a Russian visa in their own country. Also, the nationals of other countries (the US, European countries, Australia, New Zealand) can not apply for a Russian visa in Germany unless they have a permit of stay in Germany that exceeds the period covered by the Russian visa. Those measures might seem strange, but it's done because German officials issue German visas to Russians only inside Russia (and not in the other countries). So, it's sort of what they call "diplomatic" reciprocation and it's sad it's still happening, because it restricts the travel...

Anyway, there is a way round all this red tape stuff: either you can send all your docs by post, or (if it's not possible) make a special trick.

Imagine, you're in Germany, but you're a national of some other country. How would you get a Russian visa? You need to do three simple things. First, you should register in a place you stay in (ask a hostel, for example), the hostel will give you a special paper saying you have a registration in this hostel. Make sure this registration is valid for longer than your Russian visa (i.e. if you want a visa from 1 July to 20 July you should have your registration from, say, 20 June to 20 August). Second, (after you're registered) go to the government office (e.g. a town hall) to get the special permission to live in this country. You can say that you're a student, who's looking for education opportunities in their country, or that you'll stay more than 3 months, etc. This permission is a stamp in your passport and generally doesn't mean anything and it's only for some period of time (3 months). Third, after you have this stamp, you can go to the Russian consulate, show them the stamp, and they'll have to make a visa for you. It works and you can try it in any other country as well."

Would you be going by road or train via Belarus or the Ukraine (you'd need a transit visa then)? Or flying directly from Poland?

Travel / Recommendations for Zakopane [48]

Would there generally still be any snow left in April to ski on, either in Zakopane or over the border in Slovakia?

Travel / Airfare from Chicago to Wroclaw [7]

You can fly the Chigago - Europe leg of the journey with Aer Lingus to Dublin (or indeed London) for only $270

From Dublin, you can fly directly to Warsaw or Wroclaw with Ryanair for about $80.

Much cheaper, eh?!

Love / Polish man- why they do not make a move?? [25]

He might be married, even if he's not wearing a ring.
You could check with him, in a casual way, if he's married.

Most Poles over 25 are married. It's more traditional that way.

News / Does the polish immigration cause the increase of the interest in Poland? [20]

Polish cuisine is nothing special as its mostly pretty bland(as food from northern and eastern europe tends to be).

Personally speaking I thoroughly enjoyed Polish food when I was there. I would actually prefer the cuisine of northern and eastern Europe than that of southern. I really like Swedish food too.

To the point of the thread now:
When Poles started arriving in Ireland in the last 90's it was initially quite exciting because I believed they, along with other immigrants, would give a bit more colour to the place and make things more interesting. I suppose it was a novelty, as there were not very many immigrants in Ireland previously.

However, my initial enthusiasm gradually waned. The Poles who came to Ireland stuck to their own, were generally very conservative, self-serving, closed, grumpy and even sometimes criminal. They gave themselves a bad name and turned many people off.

Even I was rather turned off. This felt unusual for me because I'm a Europhile and pro-multicultural, multilingual left-winger.

Then recently I regained some interest in Poland after going there on a holiday. Even though some people there were incredibly unfriendly, I still came home with a desire to get to know more about Poland and learn some Polish language for fun.

News / Polish nursery rhyme book says Germans smell and gipsies sell their children... [28]

Anyway, I shouldn't have extrapolated that there is a descent into Nazism based on this nursery book episode. It is just an impression I have been forming for some time (much to my dismay as a Leftist and as someone who likes Poland) but I will hold off and reserve judgment for the time being. I take that part back. Let's hope Poland or any other part of Europe doesn't go down that road.

News / 14 year old rape victim from Warsaw denied abortion! [348]

It isn't necessarily a Catholic thing. Some Evangelical Protestant groups are avowedly anti-abortion too. Even some atheists too.

Abortion is always a huge dilemma and is a serious issue for those involved.

Why doesn't this girl travel to Germany, where she could avail of it more easily. I know people will say she shouldn't have to but it might be the best solution in the short-term.

Life / Thunderstorms in Poland [44]

Yeah, I love the way Continental Europe gets wonderfully strong thunderstorms. In Ireland, thunderstorms are not very common at all and rather tame and short-lived when they do occur. In the past, I've experienced some great thunderstorms in France, Switzerland and also once in Berlin. Having said that, I remember a really bad and prolonged one in Dublin in the late 80's. It began at 11pm on a Friday night and was still going on at 10 a.m. the following day. It was really stormy and it was accompanied by very large hailstones. I remember my dad woke us kids up to watch the crazy lightning and deafening thunder when it became severe at 1 a.m. and we stayed up till 3 a.m. Was such a treat then! :)

Life / I'm an American who lived in Poland for 6 years. I'm not welcome anymore. [169]

You're moaning that you need to get a visa? What do you expect? If an EU person goes to the US, they also need a visa for work! You were ILLEGAL in Poland. If an EU citizen were illegal in the US, they would be barred from ever entering the US again! Cop on!
