Hi, I have recently moved to Poland with my beuatiful polish girlfriend. We have a nice apartment in Katowice and have been here for one week now. I dont have work yet but will be starting my TEFL course online and will also start to learn polish and have some savings which will last about 6 months. Are there any other brits in the Katowice area who can offer advice/tips on anything really, to do with living in Poland and finding work etc

I'll be honest, I've been in Kato for three months now and I don't think the nightlife is that bad, ok it's not the greatest but in my honest opinion, Glasgows nightlife is far worse...yes there are many bars/clubs to choose from in Glasgow, but theres not much choice of scene in Glasgow, it's all pretty similar stuff so thus far I would say the nightlife I've experienced in Kato is in some way better, however, it does depend on what scene your into :0) I stayed in Amsterdam for a few years, now there's a city you will never beat for nightlife

but back to the original point, I don't know too much yet to be honest..... my girlfriend has been ultra busy studying recently as have most of our friends but I have been to Inqbator, near the train station, I liked it but it was kinda tunes so for me the club itself doesnt matter, it's more the music. I have heard of Spiz, as the local student club but have heard mixed reports, some ok, some bad but no-one has really said it was good or great. There is a club in Chorzow, closeby, which is the pick of the bunch for me so far, it's called Zanzibar, a small, underground club...just the way I like it ! :0)

UK, Ireland / English mobile phones - compatible with Polish sim cards? [3]

It cost me 40zl to get mine unlocked, the phone is about 2 years old, though I've been told it can be done for less than that.

Get yourself a laptop, put some credit on there, and use skype. It is so dam cheap and you can call free to other computers. Otherwise try orange they usually have good deals when phoning abroad. Calling abroad from the Uk is very over priced on all networks.

this is a topic I had to comment on, I've only been here for a few months but the poles are without doubt the worst drivers I have ever come across!!! And to go back to nauczyciels point about the speed of drivers, I honestly believe that the slower drivers are at least partly to blame for the number of accidents. I mean, do Poles understand the concept of a fast lane???? not in my experience , theyre quite happy to trundle along in the fast lane at 60km an hour and when it causes other drivers to start getting irate and attempt to undertake them, you guessed it, thats exactly the moment they decide to pull in and have the audacity to look at you like your the idiot for undertaking ! I was told that it was extremely difficult to pass your driving test here, I almost choked on my zapiekanka when I heard that comment :0)

if i were you i'd give em a buzz mate. Although they are informing people by email, best to be sure ! I've a friend from the local boozer is a pilot for wizzair, im gonna interrogate her tonight and see if i can get the flights switched gratis :0)

FYI, I found out that Wizzair have cancelled their Glasgow Prestwick route as the demand simply isnt there anymore. They may reinstate it if demand picks up again

Cardno, check this site out, when I moved over here I sent over 2 boxes of stuff (clothes, books etc) with a combined weight of 30kg. I just checked back and found the invoice in my archived mails, it only cost me £65 which i reckon is pretty reasonable.

I live in Katowice and been here for 6 months now, teaching english. I dont have any formal qualifications so I have to take work in some of the smaller local towns as the ones in the city seem to be sticklers for qualifications...hey ho, drifting off point a bit. So just to say you can feel free to contact me anytime you want. Kato has a small expat community mixed of Brits and americans and most of em are a good bunch, generally we all meet up in the Irish Bar to chat pish and sink Zywiec whilst watching the footy

Even though I've been here for 6 months, it's still quite difficult meeting and befriending locals as you would expect when you move abroad but most people I do meet are good folk and keen to get together. partly to blame for this is the schools I work in, most of the teachersaren't so young in places I work or indeed they acually live in these small towns outside the city and rarely do they venture in here
