British and American people are often adventurers or they use a six months-gap to
avoid taxes after having taught two years in one country. When winter in Poland comes they get depressed. Not family-connected they work overtime, teach a lot to get the only thing they can get here: A bit money. There is no beautiful Polish woman who moons over belly-telly video-playing male teachers from abroad. Most native speaker in Poland are totally overvalued...by themselves. Nevertheless...Poland is worth travelling...pupils and adults are hard-working, they speak much better than Spanish pupils and they...oh...forget it.

I was relatively independent when teaching in Poland. I taught adults more often...We talked about democracy in Nigeria, read English article about money systems all over the world...and then...finally I taught them some grammar stuff, not too much. It was great, but in the last weeks of the summer term ...my boss went in, checked my lessons...she told me to teach them with the coursebook (it was not only a language centre, it was also a bookshop!). They were really tricky there. They changed the coursebooks every year and made the students believe in progress...Enterprise 1, Click on 1 etc., so I stopped this way of teaching and they were really happy for a time.

Has anynone had experience with English teachers from Asia and Russia who work in Poland? What I know is that there is an increasing number of Chinese business companies that settle down in Poland... perhaps, they brought them with. In 2002 it was quiet common to hire Russian English teacher to make more profit...or due to the lack of native speakers...The earned less money and got all those problematic courses.....

It is very important to encourage everyone to speak a language. We all shouldn't forget that we came from a tree with a ...ugaga...ugaga...Set your focus on interesting topics and you get attention by everyone...Each lesson is like a gig with an audience waiting for you. If you are bad, they will tear you limb from limb. Memorising grammar was yesterday, nowadays you have to give grammar a fresh marketing...Look at the Past Continuous...how lovely the form is..it gives you an alibi...while I was learning English at half past five yesterday, Heidi Klum was waiting for me in front of the door...I am sure ...Scotland Yard will let you go..

Maybe they are just looking for new homes, but I think there is another reason...They feel safer in Poland....but joke aside now....Do more and more people live in episodes? I think a lot of people have lost their orientation nowadays wandering around like bedouins. Threatened by unemployment they make trips to all places. Globalisation touches practically everyone...there are only a few hillbillies in our modern world. Worth mentioning that there are only a few countries where people try to maintain old traditions, but modern life accelerates the decline of cultures. To take part in a culture is quite different to being a locust for a while. I don't mind being a job hopper, but I try to leave a trace. That's the point why the question is really interesting...Why do people come to Poland? How do they react on family culture in Poland?

I got the same impression that Polish News are quite different. I think it is due to the fact that there is more hunger for real information. Polish people mistrust any marketing gags. Finally they want you to give money, people say. To get any advertising effects is much harder here. In "Old Europe" all people used to live in an economic environment that tries to betray everyone. So all do it. The daily lies of capitalism are well-known in U.K. Poland seems to be fresher. We'll see what is coming...

Being a patriot...no problem...but to call up national economies in a world of interdependencies is really stupid... If people in Africa complained about circumstances, I could understand it, but in rich Europe not being able to share profits?? MrBubbles is the typical representative of a wise-ass. But in Polish schools I have also observed arrogant managers leading people to believe a big business, but leading only a Mickey Mouse school. Cash money just by customers were counted next to your classroom. Was it a lack of a business accountant, or what? Is there a cash culture (do renka)? It seemed to be a show for me, but perhaps someone can explain me this phenomenon?! In addition to this they treated young learners and adults like kids and were really arrogant to them.

I'm afraid that life in the United States will be more difficult in future. In such a huge country energy supply plays a key role. I wouldn't like to be the witness of the downfall which was caused by George. The scarcity of energy resources is remarkable. So back to your roots, it doesn't hurt!

Have you ever been to Poland? If yes, you will know that there is no real pub culture in Poland. When I was in Poland in 2002, I was really surprised how people lived at that time. Perhaps something has changed since then. Going out with a Polish lass was unthinkable. Leisure activities were quite unusual...family ties were too strong...there was no interest in foreign people coming from abroad...I was lucky because of my family connections, but some of my British colleagues broke stay off after they had suffered the dark winter time...

Trish...thanks for your opinions...but there is a British culture. And there is also a British history. The mighty seapower has not only accelerated globalisation, English language as a world language has opened horizons for lots of people...so what? I agree with you that there are some traditions people cannot be proud of...today...for example....getting totally drunk at stag nights abroad...and being rude there, but each country and each culture has things we can talk badly about...

I am not so naive, MrBubbles and I think your name is your programme. I cannnot imagine that there is a language school in Poland in which a Polish teacher is allowed to speak Polish in an English lesson. It doesn't make any sense...and I am afraid you only get frustrated here because of payment. I know a lot of good Polish teachers. They tell me that they are paid worse than native speakers and language schools make profits with them...that's not fair and I fully agree with these complaints.
