Life / How important is it to have a car in Poland? [37]

I guess its a city / not city thing, rather than a Poland / not Poland thing.

I have to say that at the age of 33, I never got around to passing my driving test, and it's not done me any harm.

Language / Recommend a text book for learning Polish... [10]

So, now I've got myself a Polish teacher who is happy to fit in with my erratic schedule in return for beer and curry...

All we need is a text book. Any suggestions?

I was reading all about it on Amazon, when I suddenly realised.... the guy who wrote it used to be my Russian tutor :)

Has anyone else used this book, and did it help them?

UK, Ireland / Polish people are happy with the UK health care system [27]

although there is a lot of messing about going on

Exactly - sure, the government can say that £x millions are being pumped in, though I am aware of a few instances where money is just squandered, and surely these instances are just the tip of the iceberg.

Travel / Misconceptions of tourists about Poland [14]

The temperature is one of them. Many see Poland as a freezing country.

I e-mailed around a couple of pics from one of my trips to the Baltic Coast earlier this Summer, and asked friends to guess where I was.. some of them thought that I was in Spain :D

Life / AMERICAN-STYLE SLOB CHIC IN POLAND? [24]

Not sure what you're getting at here, Polonius3.

I've witnessed some ugly behaviour from the suited and booted types.

Travel / Misconceptions of tourists about Poland [14]

I'm still battling with a lot of my friend's perceptions - they refuse to believe that I am visiting a really cool, fun and friendly country whenever I visit Poland. Almost like they want to stick with their images of concrete blocks and stodgy food.

Also, a very common misconception is the one that can be summed up in the conversation that I have EVERY SINGLE TIME I travel to Poland, as my parents offer to give me some Euros left over from theior holidays in France, thinking that this is the currency of Poland. And I always excplain to them that like the UK, Poland is in the EU but has its own currency. And then my dad always says, "wow, I bet there are millions of Zloty to the pound" If only this were true....

UK, Ireland / Polish people are happy with the UK health care system [27]

This is turning into a silly thread. The NHS is far too complex to sum up in just a few posts on a thread. And opinions will depend on individuals' experience.

Apart from periods when I have lived abroad, I've had NHS treatment all my life. Some aspects have been great - I went to A&E in a big central London hopsital with an asthma attack a couple of weeks ago, I was seem within 20 mins, and treated pretty much straight away, and on my way home within 2 hours. I should add that this was in the wee small hours of a Saturday / Sunday when the hospital should have been full of stabbings and shootings. I really couldn't fault the system on that occasion.

But my father-in-law has had problems with his kidneys and has had terrible experiences with getting treatment on the NHS. Won't go into too much detail here, however it is really disgraceful how he has been treated.

Here in London, I sometimes have to wait 2 weeks for a GP's appointment - but sometimes I can get a same-day appointment, and when I do get seen, some GPs are keen to get you out of the waiting room the minute you arrive, whereas others have been brilliant and gone the extra mile.

As for dental treatment, forget it - I get my teeth treated at private clinics in Poland :D <- lovely Polish smile!!

So you see, the NHS is rather complex - you can't give a black or white answer.

Travel / Krakow going down the toilet! [184]

Surely things are getting better, as some of the flights to Krakow have either been reduced or withdrawn....

UK, Ireland / First UK ID Card Design Launched [16]

Exactly.

Also, if terrorists and others that are up to no good want to get round the system, they'll always find a way.

UK, Ireland / info centres in england for a polish friend [8]

Come down to London and spend a day in Hammersmith.... lots of shops and delis etc. No idea of their contact details and doubt that many would have their own website.

Love / DO POLISH GAYS ALSO DIE YOUNG? [56]

This is a pathetic thread... I'm really sadened by the homophobic sentiments here.

For what its worth, the guy guys that I know really take care of themselves, work out regularly and eat healthily and take care of their skin. I reckon that that they take their health more seriously than your average Joe.

Life / Is Poland cold? [40]

I e-mailed around a few pics of one of my trips to the Baltic coast this Summer and asked friends where they thought I was. A few suggested Spain!! :D

Only the sharp-eyed who spotted that I was enjoying a Tyskie came up with the right answer :)

UK, Ireland / BRITS LIKE POLISH FOOD [51]

when i'm in the UK i miss pierogi stuffed with spinach and aioli from a local bar in krakow and of course kielbasa grilled over coals :) yum yum

Yes, please..... I'm surprised that there aren't more Polish restaurants in London. Kind of like a Brick Lane for Polish food - but with decent, well-prepared food and without agressive touts trying to reel you in with freebies that you always end up paying for, and drunken city boys pissing on the tables :(

Life / When in Poland, should I be British or Scottish? [104]

londonchick the whole idea of pretending to be someone else doesn't make any sense.

You're missing my point - I am Scottish, but it's not obvious. I just wondered whether there was any benefit in pointing out my roots.

Like a guy that I met a few months ago who declared that his grandparents were Polish, when I only asked what part of London he lived in LOL!!

Say that you are Canadian.

Eh!! I knew that it was aboot time for you to appear, Southern...

Life / When in Poland, should I be British or Scottish? [104]

english people are making mess in Krakow, so we have low opinion on them ;)

Yes, yes... I know. We're not all turds though ;)

I'd heard that there was plans to put a stop to that nonsense though. Along with the reduction of flights to Balice (Jet2 and Easy Jet if I remember rightly).

UK, Ireland / BRITS LIKE POLISH FOOD [51]

There's nothing wrong with peasant style food I guess. Like Greek food, which I love!! I guess I'd describe that as peasnat style too - it is pretty simple.

There's a Greek restaurant in Hoxton that tries to serve Greek Food in an up-market / silver service style and to be honest, it just doesn't work. And it's not cheap either.

hope that tastes better than it sounds, it sounds like school dinner / peasant food :-)

What's stopping you from trying it? Really, don't go knocking it until you've tried it.

lol, not really the best time to give up being a veggie when you go to Poland, i found a lot of the food was veggie based :).

I was in Nałęczów and spotted the veal with wild mushrooms on the menu... how could I say no? LOL!!!

UK, Ireland / BRITS LIKE POLISH FOOD [51]

However having said that there are some Polish dishes that i like

Some of those dishes can be a bit hit and miss. I was a veggie for 8 years until I was on a trip to Poland and just decided to get back into meat. I really don't like that jelly stuff on the pork - there is nothing nice about that.

On a recent trip, I had duck roasted with pears... was very memorable dish :P
