USA, Canada / Work ethics in Poland vs US [66]

No, the U.S. has the system backwards. Metric is far more accurate and precise.

No, the Europeans think it's backwards because they don't understand it.
60 miles per hour makes more sense,(since an hour has 60 minutes, so you know you travel 1 mile/min.) than 100 km/hr.
Minutes, seconds, hours, months are not metric.

USA, Canada / Work ethics in Poland vs US [66]

The documentary film "Zielona Karta" portrays lives of Poles who won the green card and their lives in America. And they all want the same: To better themselves, make money, live in America. They visit Poland, but very few want to go back and they all come to the conclusion that in America you have to work.

Some Poles think that America will find them jobs and housing when they arrive, that everybody is rich, has luxurious cars - like in the movies, but it's totally different than they imagined.

And why do they have to convert everything into the metric system?
I guess I do the same when in Europe, gotta convert all those kilometers and centimeters and celciuses into normal measures. :)

USA, Canada / Work ethics in Poland vs US [66]

Poles that come to America are shocked that they have to work. They imagined money with little work, but the reality is different.
Those that were used to the Polish way of working find it hard to adjust to actually work 10-12 hours a day without a cigarette break every 5 minutes.

Life / The Polish senior citizens [10]

There are some 'survivors' who should be promptly tried and hanged,

You're right. Like the ones hanging out in the bathrooms charging you for using the toilet. They are the meanest, ugliest things.

God bless their souls.
The ones who survived the war, now toothless and weak. What interesting stories they can tell you.
Bless them all.

Life / Was it a misunderstanding or I was set up for extortion? [8]

I would report this to the American Embassy and the police.
Someone has to hear about this. It will make you feel better in a way that you got back at them and maybe it will make others aware of what's going on. Don't let it slide by, they should not get away with it.

Love / Age difference in our relationship. I'm 41, my girlfriend is 27. Common in Polska? [57]

Get to know her, nothing wrong with that, meet her parents and see what happens.
But this is what usually happens: you guys get married, maybe have a few kids here and there, in about 7 years the marriage gets boring, she starts talking to this Polish guy. You have no idea what they're talking about.

You post her emails and text messages on the forum.
We translate them for you.
Some of us translate them wrong.
She is unhappy, kids cry, and you end up with a broken heart.

USA, Canada / Polish Constitution Parade 2009 Chicago, Illinois [25]

I was in high school and we wore these wonderful navy blue fartuchy with a white kołnierzyk and a red tarcza on the left arm with the name of your school. And you had to wait, and wait and wait. Thank god for those ice scream and water stands along the road.

And the worst part was getting home. It was a national holiday. No buses were running. Well they were, every 1-2 hours and when they came, they were packed full, so had to wait another 1-2 hour for the next one.

USA, Canada / STEVENS POINT, ANYONE? [11]

I heard of this place. In fact, I worked in Gwiazda Polarna as editor and paste-up artist a few years ago. It is true, that it's the first Polish Newspaper in America.

The Polish immigrants settled in Polonia in the 1800's, which meant away from home. It was one of the first largest Polish community located about 15 miles from Point.

Yup, they still around, but most are in cemeteries and nursery homes.

Love / SOS!! I feel a little hopeless with my Polish husband... [58]

Get out of this relationship ASAP!! Don't get fooled by his niceness, he treats you like trash but is nice when he wants something.

Unless you like being abused and treated like a rag then it's a whole new story.

Love / SOS!! I feel a little hopeless with my Polish husband... [58]

I love him, I don't want to leave him,

It's not love. You just got dependent on being with him. It will be hard at first, but spread your wings and fly away. Nothing good will ever come from this relationship.

Be strong.
Good luck.

Travel / WE ARE BACK FROM POLAND AND HERE IS OUR REPORT [96]

We were thinking we may wander over to the zoo while in Warsaw, does anyone recommend that?

It's a nice Zoo, the elephant enclosure is on of the most modern ones in Europe.
There is constant remodeling and new buildings replacing the old ones.
The bear enclosure was built in 1952 as an invitation to the zoo.

Love / I'm pregnant by my Polish boyfriend but he wants me to abort it! [132]

If you don't want a child use anti-contraception

Or get yourself spayed or neutered. An operation like an abortion, but this way you won't be creating a new life and since you don't want a kid anyway, get yourself spayed.

But spayed women tend to get fat.

Love / I'm pregnant by my Polish boyfriend but he wants me to abort it! [132]

When will people learn that the only reason to have sex is to have a baby?
Just kidding.
People have to learn to be responsible for their actions. They started a life and it's wrong to destroy it. If they didn't want a child, they should have thought before having sex.

On the other hand, some babies, like freebird should have been aborted.

Love / I'm pregnant by my Polish boyfriend but he wants me to abort it! [132]

So it's better to run a miserable life

It's only miserable if you allow it to be.
Don't abort this child, don't give the polak the satisfaction after treating you like this and let him be responsible for his actions. Once the baby is born, you will see only this precious little baby, not him.
