Language / Overuse of the words 'po prostu', esp among females [41]

and in english (oops sorry american..): dude. like.

Like... has been used in regional English for quite some time.

This from a Geordie (Newcastle) website.
"while sentence final like as in "who says, like?" or "it's not my fault, like" may request or provide exemplification".

Language / Dual language books..SUGGESTIONS? [10]

It seems like it could be a good way of starting to understand the way the Polish language works.

It might be easier to do it the other way around. Find a Polish website with dual language books for people learning English. You might get more results. I hope this makes sense.

UK, Ireland / Polish Spitfire shoots down BNP [63]

Go back to the 70s and you would find people leaving school and claiming benefits rather than getting a job

Do a bit more research on the 70's.

Early to mid 70's. Most pupils left school at age sixteen and found work.

Mid to late 70's saw long periods of industrial action. Pupils made use of college or through no fault of their own... ended up claiming benefit

Travel / Getting from Wroclaw to Krakow [15]

Is it the type of place that you see in half a day?

It really does depend on what your interests are. A couple of days (one night) and you'll see everything that's important.

Life / Questions about IKEA in Poznan [20]

IKEA Poznan and bring it to Berlin

there are three ikea stores in berlin... all of them are bigger than the stores in poland.

the extra cost in berlin... if there is any... would soak up costs of delivery from poland.

Life / Women in Poland dyeing hair red [30]

I thought dyeing hair black was more popular.

This fits a particular fashion type and age group.

Red hair covers a wider age group and comes in a number of shades.

Jet black hair seems to make blue eyes sparkle.

Genealogy / Possible Polish surnames? Kaiser and Grobel. [3]

Hi my dad is Polish but born in u.k after ww2 - his fathers surname is kaiser his mothers is Grobel?

Were your Grandparents married in the UK ?

You don't actually say if your Grandparents moved to the UK before or after WWII

You should be able to sort some of this out by using British Records... Naturalization Records etc.

We can't do much without dates and place names. More info, please.

Life / Women in Poland dyeing hair red [30]

What's up with all the red hair on women in Poland?

In the past red hair was a fashion for many teens and those in older age groups.

It has never gone away completely.

It's strange that you bring up this thread..... because only today I got the idea that the colour was coming back into fashion.

News / THOUSANDS OF YOUNG ISRAELIS FLOODING POLAND [93]

I don't think he is. An allotment was closed in Wroclaw about 15 years ago and all the paving (tombstones) were returned to the adjoining cemetery. Some of these tombstones were even used as makeshift table tops. I know because I saw it. The cemetery then had its walls repaired and was closed to the public.

Genealogy / Looking for the Klarnett Family [13]

Can any one tell me if ships passenger lists sailing from Poland to England about 1874/5 exist or am I just wishful thinking?

You will probably find some records for this in Hamburg. The reason for this is history

My Dad said that his grandfather is from Austria, but my grandmother (above) poo-poo'ed him saying we are Lithuania and Polish.

to understand this you should read the wikipedia history of Poland.

I am also curious what a Pole looks like

there are a couple of picture/photo threads that might provide the answer.
