USA, Canada / VISA TRAVEL TO USA [32]

I think the current average percentage rate of receiving a visa to USA by Polish citizen is about 70% (so out of 10 people 3 will not get a visa).

USA, Canada / NO VISAS to Canada for Poles in the near future [62]

I really doubt that Canadian immigration was taking into consideration the above when deciding to let Poles in.

I don't know why not? The government don't need lazy people who stay on unemployment benefits, pay no or little tax, use free health care. They need entrepreneurs who set up their own companies, pay big taxes, can afford their health insurance, follow the law, ... and send their kids to school to do the same in the future. If needed, Poles can be great cleaning people/construction workers or doctors and engineers - you name it.

USA, Canada / NO VISAS to Canada for Poles in the near future [62]

Now this is what I call a government that actually has enough brains to think about the future. Poles as group of people are IDEAL to be invited and live in another country:

- they are hardworking,
- they pay taxes, follow the laws of the country they live in,
- they are intelligent and honest at the same time,
- they like buying goods and services - even the most luxurious ones, which drive the economy,
- they are religious,
- they aren't violent, aren't into drugs etc.

The US government still doesn't get it and prefers their country to become another Mexican or Puerto-Rican state where people don't spend money (but send them abroad), avoid paying taxes, and are likely to commit crimes (with all due respect to other nations).

But soon the US may wise up and will be sending free invitations to Poles just for them to settle in the US..

Again, congratulations to Canada and their government, it's a good and long-term investment in your country.

Love / wanna meet a nice polish girl in Chicago [10]

You need to hurry up as many young Poles go back to Europe to get a better paid jobs in the UK, for example. Living without a SS or drivers license is not fun in the US anymore..

But you can always check English-Polish language schools where young Poles learn English. Or Polish bars/pubs like jedynka.com, accentcafe.com, jollyinn.com, bobak.com and similar. There is also Copernicus Center where there are often Polish bands, theaters etc.

News / Predictions for Polish Presidential Candidates 2010 [23]

are you saying that being liberal = better? i disagree

Just the opposite, I'm stating what I think is the fact. I don't personally think liberalism is a good route for the Polish political and social scene.

you must be joking...
to be honest i don't see on any smart candidate out there...

Me neither. In this aspect Poland and USA have the same problem.

I know USA is "in trouble", but did you read the other part of the saying? A recession of USA will affect the whole world and now there's nothing to be happy about - whether you are an American, a Pole, or any nother nationality.

There is a nice saying, something like: During a recession the fat (USA in this case) will get hungry, but the slim (economically poor countries) will die.

First official was France, now Canada, who's next? I expect some other EU countries. I guess too much people buy from the US now and it hurts. Those who say the debt is "lower" now should realize debt is to be paid off in increments and besides - debtors are never in a hurry to pay debt so this argument doesn't hold much water.

TORONTO, Nov 8 (Reuters) - The speedy rise in the Canadian dollar is creating a difficult environment for Canada, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said on Thursday.

But why millions of young Poles work in the UK and other EU countries (not to mention the US)? If the economic situation is as you describe - maybe they don't like Polish culture, wheather, or way of life...

News / Weak US dollar in Poland and other countries... [180]

most of my friends here in Poland have computers, laptops, fancy cellphones, some of us even have nice cars. what parallel universe are you living in? have you really been to Poland lately?

This is what I was writing about before. Some of them may have computers, cars, cell phones, and laptops, but they still live with their parents or grand parents as they cannot afford a decent house.

It's not only about traveling. Check how much America imports, how many products you buy are not American. And don't think that they all will be made in USA now, because costs in China and many other countries are still several times lower.

I've never had an American-made care; either Japanes or European. But will Europe be better off when they have lots of products in magazines? Who will be buying from them if Americans stop buying?

News / Weak US dollar in Poland and other countries... [180]

I realize I won't be able to travel abroad (to Poland especially) as long as the US dollar continues to fall. I don't care about the American status as I feel Polish, not American. I don't think it was a master plan with the dollar, I think it just happened and then the US government didn't even expect that. But after a while their realized it's actually not a bad situation for the US economy to have the US dollar weak so they just don't do much about it.

Frustration - when I go to Poland and have brand clothes, laptop, and other "expensive goods" it feels like people in Poland consider me to be rich when in fact it's something normal here. Then I talk to Polish doctors, engineer's, or other people with university degrees and they complain they have 20 years to pay off their apartment or need to take a loan to buy a small car. That's where I feel the frustration.

Yes. But the question is - what's a country worth if it's hard to live in it? How much your salary is able to buy you goods and services is the most important measure. How long in Poland you'll have to work to afford a small apartment versus in the US? Same for other big-ticket goods like cars or even clothes.

I'm from Poland myself and I understand the frustration of Poles in Poland. But the argument that the Polish Zloty is strong and people should be happy becasue of it is as silly as propaganda. Look at the bottom line - US dollar is weak abroad, but Americans still can afford a new car every 5 years, new computers (PC and laptop) every 2 year, changing oil every 3000 miles. Compare it to Poland... When I go to Poland people window-shop for goods that Americans buy once a month.

Nice charts, but no goods and empty wallet doesn't equal the quality of life.

The European leaders start to calculate and it's not looking as bright for Europe (or Poland) as some here suggest:

Sarkozy's complaints that the U.S. currency's drop against the euro is undermining European competitiveness.

Sarkozy said yesterday that Toulouse, France-based Airbus SAS, the world's biggest planemaker, loses about 1 billion euros ($1.5 billion) for every 10-cent increase against the dollar.

Economy isn't run on hamburgers.

I totally agree. Now tell me who holds 50% or more of the global Internet technologies and revenue? It will grow much more in the next years.

You are way too optimistic. Dollar used to be too strong and that was bad for export but now It is too weak and still falling. US has still very large trade deficit and you can't change that in short time, in some cases (like oil) you can't change that at all.

The bottom line is the most Americans don't care either. They could buy a hamburger for $1 10 years ago and they can buy it today for $1. They can buy a BMW for $30K while the same BMW costs $50K in Europe. Most of them realize the US dollar is weak when they go abroad only.. If anything, the weak US dollar may first have negative impact abroad. About the oil, the US spent billions of dollars to get to the biggest reservoir of oil in the world (Iraq), so their interests are covered. Another thing is if it was ethical or not.

honestly we dont trade with USA ...

Do you mean Poland doesn't trade with USA? What about the F-16, GM or Ford-owned cars, not to mention Polish businesses in Iraq.

Either way, I notice Polish beer is very expensive in the US (like $16 per 6-pack) -- people won't buy it..
