USA, Canada / The 2nd Amendment (USA), the right to own guns [261]

I Norway we have a law that says one who owns guns must also have a guncabinet to keep them locked in. And ammunition can not be locked into the same cabinet.
Is there no such law in USA?

It is exactly the same in Nevada and Michigan and all the other states as far as I know.

News / So how do poles feel about the illegal immigration from mexico? [25]

El Kitty, you're wrong!

From Wikipedia: Official languages - None at federal level (English is an official language in 28 states)1

Listen everybody; I've got a new idea: the official language of the USA should be Chippewa and of the Mexico should be Maya. That would be fair.

Check this out, this is hillarius:
The Latino Comedy Project's "300"

"USA will become a Latin Country" I don't think so!!!!! Maybe part of it will fullfill with Latins but not the entire USA. I keep my words regardless what you say darling ;P

The South first, the North soon to come. Read this: "CALIFORNIA
Hispanics expected to be state's majority by 2042":

PS I know Spanish already.

Smart girl.

Jestesjedyny you are wrong!
Both things will happen in about 15-20 years.
So if you're an American - start taking some salsa lessons (I already did).
If you live in Europe... well, enjoy your freedom while you can.

california was colonized by the Spanish Empire

I don't think the Mexicans would be very happy about having the Spaniards back LOL

Does anybody here know what is the official language of the USA? How about the official language of California?
There is none! The United States does not have an official language. Look it up!
The first step in integrating the South Americans (most of them are hard working and honest people) is to establish English as an official language of the USA.

This would be a good start, anyways - that would force many to learn the language.

PS.
BTW, in your opinion, what will happen first and when?
-USA will become a Latin Country
-Europe will become a Muslim continent?

USA, Canada / Several shot at Northern Illinois University, USA [38]

your free to keep a pistol in your house for protection,or free to take a rifle/shotgun into the woods to shoot fluffy bunnies and Bambi etc, but, you step out onto the street with a gun and your not a law enforcement officer, you get shot or arrested by said law enforcement agencies.

that is exactly the way the law is here now.

And whats with all the frikkin assault rifles and sporting SMGs?.....

I believe these are outlawed. The gunman used a hunting shotgun, Remington 12 gauge. It's a bird hunting shotgun, it shoots pellets not bullets. That's what I have and accidentally it's the most popular firearm in USA and Canada.

publicity seeking nut jobs seem to be the main culprits

Agree. This one apparently had stopped taking some drugs and that flipped him over...

how on Earth do you get the people of the United States to hand in their guns? It's impossible.

That's true. I may be willing to give up my shotgun, but not an average American (not yet). It does seem to be happening, only s;lowly, step by step. I think it went similarly in Australia. There was Brady bill in the 90's (ban on the assault guns), there was federal waiting period to by a gun... etc

PS. It's a terrible tragedy anyway you look at it and my hart goes out to the victims.

USA, Canada / 2008 U.S. Presidential Election according to Polish and foreign people [90]

I'm just waiting for the new terror scare just prior to the election trying to scare us all into another 4 yrs of Republican hell.

Did you notice the news about Khalid Shaikh Mohammed's trial?
latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-gitmo12feb12,0,2756288.story

He was one of the masterminds behind 9-11. Something tells me that the climax of this trial will fall somewhere about... the elections time. What a coincidence (again), isn't it?

UK, Ireland / I'm pregnant with my Polish boyfriend. Visa question. [25]

You made a right choice, Wanrawin. Trust me, once you have the baby in your arms - there is no higher high in this world. One second with your baby is worth 1000 times the hardship you'll have to go through to get there. Congratulations.

Life / Poles in Poland: How did you learn your English? [60]

Tell me,how many languages is Mr Bush fluent in?

Actually, believe it or not, George W. Bush speaks fluent Spanish. As far as his English skills, I like to joke sometimes that for once in my life I can enjoy a U.S. President who's English is worse then mine.

Now seriously, I heard a couple of times that GWB may have a legitimate case of AADD and the symptoms are there, I guess the history will tell.

I remember there was a similar controversy with Ronald Reagan, rumors were flying about his Alzheimer's disease, and we had found the truth after his presidency was over. That was a sad case actually, because he was such a great speaker and writer, and then he fell in to the illness, he would forget the words... Very sad, regardless of your political view.

History / Poland-Russia: never-ending story? [1341]

Dice I agree, doesn't have to be exactly Nuclear Power but some form of alternative energy..... Or improved technology to burn coal with much less or no emmisions....(liquified coal).. in addition to diversifing its energy suppliers.

Liquefied coal has extremely high levels of CO2. But they are working on CO2 sequestration. Unfortunately for now it does not look like a truly practical idea.

Germany went the way of renewable sources (wind, solar). France took the way of nuclear energy. Today Germany has to export it's energy from France, who has the cheapest energy in Europe.

And then there is ethanol in the USA - made out of garbage, should cost about $1/gal to produce.
In my opinion the nuclear is the way to go, but I may be wrong.

One thing is for sure - if we do nothing, Poland may as well start waving Russian flag and call itself "a new Russian republic" LOL

History / Poland-Russia: never-ending story? [1341]

Poland wants to be normal independent country, normal member of EU, normal member of NATO. That is all. Russia has problems with it.

Agree. Well put, Lukasz.

What does Russia represent?????

I know you guys may not like it very much, but what Russia is representing now is... the energy sources. Mainly oil, but also natural gas, which is even more valuable in the future. Natural gas is extremely valuable in the age of the Global Warming, because it has low CO2 emissions. So to not to be intimidated by Russia in the future requires for Poland to become independent from natural gas and oil and start building nuclear energy plants TODAY.

UK, Ireland / Polish Church/Polski Kosciol near London and Dublin? [18]

I think you're talking about the First Council of Nicaea. They've decided which gospels became a part of the Holy Bible, they let the four we have today and rejected some others (the Gospel of Mary, the Gospel of Judas etc).

Love / BLACK GUYS POLISH WOMEN [809]

Polish chicks like to "score" Black Men, especially the ones who are here only on a short visit from Poland. I think to them it's almost like a passage way, a hunting trofie, it's so they can go back and secretly tell their girlfriends: "I f@#*d a Black Guy". I used to bartend for living while in college, so I've seen it many times.

Nothing wrong with that, IMO.
BTW, it's not only Polish girls, it's all the Europeans.

News / Poland in coming 5 years [48]

Jokes aside, IMO in five years Poland will continue on the way to the economic prosparity, the wages will get closer, or maybe even equal, to the wages in Western Europe. Most migrant workers from the West will return home, bringing much needed capital and a different way of thinking. Hopefuly by then the govormant beurocracy and the relastate market will easup a liitle, so the prises for new homes will be more affordible for an everage citizen, wich will create a constraction boom.

The rest is a tipical western hemisphere country story: to many cars, not enough parking, chilhood obisity, not enough exersise etc... welcome to the Developt World...

Life / Poles in Poland: How did you learn your English? [60]

I see here on the PF quite a lot of Poles living in Poland with, IMHO, excellent English skills. On the other hand some people who come here for a visit from Poland, and sometimes even Poles who live here have a rather poor English capability. Even those with a higher education have often a poor knowledge of English. Also sometimes I see a higher ranking Polish official on TV who cant speak English.

How come? Where did you learn your English? In a school, private lessons or did you use to live abroad? Is it more common now in Poland to speak an international language like English, German, French?

PS. Some time ago I've read somewhere on the Internet that in Poland you can speak English with a Taxi driver, French with a chef, German with a car mechanic, but you need a translator to talk with an Government Official. LOL

Life / Can you have guns in Poland? [25]

What about hunting? What do you do when there is more deer than the land can support? Do you let them starve in the winter? What if there is to many rabbit, or fox etc? I think (not sure) there was some hunting even in the communist times, or am I mistaken?

USA, Canada / 2008 U.S. Presidential Election according to Polish and foreign people [90]

There is some serious trouble brewing for the Democratic Party during these elections. The race between Obama and Clinton is running so close, that this time around the vote of so called "Supper Delegates" may make a difference and this may cause a big controversy. It is not known exactly who those "Super Delegates" are, how do they count their votes, and do they vote their own will or the will of the voters. This potentially could become a huge embarrassment for the Democratic Party, right on the doorstep of their big success - recapturing the Presidency of the U.S. If the race ends really close and the votes of so called “Super Delegates” will make the final difference, the Democratic Party will have a lot of explaining to do to its constituents.

History / Polish-German history book for Schools [28]

Poland and Gemany write one history book for schools.
Poles and Germans want to do the same as French and Germans did.

That is a great idea. And Europe needs it desperately, judging by what I read on these forums. Maybe people in the former Yugoslavia should take the same approach as well, before they start a new war, this time over severity of Kosovo.

It's about time we start learning that there are people just like us on the other side of that "century old conflict".

Today's World is full of "century old conflicts" and it's time for us to change them to "former conflicts from centuries before". There are people on all sides of borders, and they are only of one race: the Human Race.

News / Poland in coming 5 years [48]

In five years the average income in Poland will quadruple, which will bring millions of foreign workers from poorer countries looking for work.
Our friend Grzeg will be spending all his time on the Ukrainian Forums complaining about the influx of foreign workers unto Poland. He will use "NoImmigration" as a forum name.

"Our" PF Noimmigration will leave GB to find a job as a sewer line clener in Poland, but ironically this move will actually make him very happy and proud. He'll be very good at it and he'll finish his days in Poland, and they'll sing songs about him: "the best sewer cleaner ever".

News / Storyville: The Polish Ambulance Murders (BBC4) [43]

dead and buried within 10 years

If we're talking about a longer period of time, such us 10 years, and a bigger city like Lodz, with many ambulances, you could quite easely calculate how many people were murdered by these two ambulances using simple statistics.

All you need to know is how many ambulances there were in the city of Lodz within these 10 years, how many patients were transported during that time, how many of them had died during the transport. That would give you your average death rate in a Lodz ambulance. If there is a difference between that number and the number of deaths in our "suspect" ambulance, we can calculate the standard deviation, which is a square root of variance, or basically probability that this one ambulance's death rate is higher then average.

For example, you could say that an average death rate for a Lodz ambulance is, let's say, 8%, and the death rate of our "suspect" ambulance is (just an example!) 24% with a standard deviation of +-2.6%. Then you could say, that the chance of the "suspect" ambulance having so much higher death rate simple by "bad luck", not a homicide is 1 in 160, or 0.6%. That gives you the chances that a homicide had occurred is 99.4% and you have your number of murders +-2.6%.

News / Storyville: The Polish Ambulance Murders (BBC4) [43]

Can someone please explain to me really fast what is the story about or give me some links to read about it? Were there really 50,000 people murdered? Isn't that impossible, that would be the biggest mass murder in the history, wouldn't it? Is there a link somewhere with a video I could download in the USA since the BBC one does not work here?

Mitt Romney had backed out? Holy crap! You're right! So the former 'underdog' Huckabee is in a two-man race now. Wow. Go Mr. Baptist Minister go!

The biggest difference between Huckabee and any other candidate are taxes - Huckabee is proposing abolishing IRS and federal taxes and implementing a flat sales tax instead.

Mike Huckabee - What is the "Fair Tax?"

USA, Canada / 2008 U.S. Presidential Election according to Polish and foreign people [90]

My prediction about the Super Tuesday turned out to be pretty accurate:

Today is the Super Tuesday - who do you think will win?
My bet: Obama amongst the Democrats and McCain amongst the Republicans.

In fact McCain won with the Republicans and Democrats had a tie between Obama and Clinton. Obama is in a better position now, because more States that are still on the ballet lean towards Obama then Clinton.

The big news is now that Senator Clinton had to donate $5 million of her own money to the campaign and her staff decided to work the next month for free. That can only mean that her campaign is in big financial troubles!
