Life / What are your favourite Polish Radio stations...? [27]

I'm listening to that right now. :)

Brilliant isn't it?? They play loads of stuff that you've not heard for ages, like Ace of Base and Fool's Garden... then something from the current charts. Also a good balance of Polish muic, which I'm gradually getting into.

Language / My Learning Polish Woes... [64]

Tell me, LondonChick, which did you find harder, Polish or German?

I find German waaaay easier, but then again I've been speaking it since I was 12... went on a German exchange at school and ended up studying German at uni, where I won an award for accuracy in speaking it. Have lived in Germany off and on over the years.

I'm a native German-English speaker and first studied Polish at the ripe 'young' age of thirty,

Ahhh, see I'm 33 and just getting started in Polish. I guess age plays a bit part... youngsters seem to pick up languages much easier.

Swedish

Jag pratar också Svenska!!

Hang in there LC. Do you have Polish friends here that can help you in any way? I find the help of my Polish friends invaluable. :)

Yes - have recently developed some Polish friendships. Trouble is that we usually revert to English.

And yes - Januszs lessons are fab!!

That's not a bad idea.

I also travel there quite regularly and try to make connections with words.... Ryba at a fish restaurant, Winda in a hotel etc...

I listen to online Polish radio when I'm working.

Flick through free mags like Panorama and Polish express.

Cheers for the support guys :)

plosive (stop)vs. fricative

Ha! See, I know what you're talking about.... in fact I can even draw a mouth diagram to highlight the difference between the two. But I'm still buggered if I can hear the difference. Maybe I'm going deaf in my old age.

Reading is not good enough. You need to read aloud and repeat. Repetition is king in learning languages (or queen, if you prefer)

Very true. I guess I should go for it and start muttering to myself on the train. I might end up with a carriage to myself :)

(so long as you don't give up first!)

At a risk of sounding like one of those twats on The Apprentice, giving up really isn't an option. I NEED to be able to master Polish.

Jestem Glupi

translation please :)

Language / My Learning Polish Woes... [64]

Ok, I know that I've only just started in recent weeks, but I am finding it difficult :(

For instance, I really can't hear the difference between "hi" (czesc) and the number six (szes) :(

I carry my books everywhere so that I can learn on the go - on a 20 min train ride, or over a quick coffee. But I just can't seem to retain the vocab. I am also surounding myself with the sounds of the language - well, as best as I can in London.

I thought that I had some kind of aptitude towards languages - I am bilingual in German, and also speak several other European languages fairly fluently - even managed to study Russian for a while. But Polish just doesn't seem to stick :(

Tell me it's going to get better and all fall into place....

Love / Plastic boobs in Poland [44]

Moscow has a number of boobjobs close to California.

One time in Moscow, I saw a girl who had the most obvious boob-job. They were like somebody had taken the perfect spherical watermellon, cut it in half and stuck it down her top. Very cartoony LOL!!

Travel / I need a hotel in Szczecin - got to be central and affordable [9]

The question is in the title.

So far, I'm looking at the Ibis at PLN 198 a night. OK, I know tyhat with an Ibis you could be anywhere in the world, however they tend to be clean and they do the job.

Any better suggestions?

Work / Working in a Polish Office [13]

w Londynie :)

So... talking about someone behind his back (but in front of someone else) is VERY BAD idea. Even if other co-workers are moaning. Do NOT join them until you know who is who. Just let them talk ;)

Yes, a fair point. Cheers.

Also (while we're here) Polish people are often surprisingly good at establishing functioning working relationships with people they don't like personally (the feeling is mutual and open - nothing two-faced going on) or have very strong disagreements with and often surprisingly bad at establishing that kind of relationship with people they like and/or agree with about most things. This means a lot of the signals of alliances, antipathy etc that you're used to can be deceiving.

Hmmmm.... interesting

Work / Working in a Polish Office [13]

Just found out that I am going to be working in an exclusively Polish environment - I'll be the only non-Polish speaker in the office.

Anyone got any tips?

I know the basic principles... a smile goes a long way etc. But are there any quirks or tricks to working in a Polish office?... such as making coffee for your colleagues, whip-rounds for birthdays, going out socially after work etc... and any other points

Real Estate / Polish palaces for sale - Is this a scam site? [9]

That has to be one of the crappest websites that I have seen in a long time.

Plus, would you really trust a company that just gave a PO Box no and used an e-mail address like @biznet1.net?

If I weren't so busy finishing off a piece of work, I would pop on my Roger Cook anorak and investigate further for you...

Language / Recommend a text book for learning Polish... [10]

Cheers Hal - v. interesting links.

I agree, Teach Yourself Polish isn't great.

Hmm... when I was studying Russian at Uni, we used the TY as the basis of the course, and I quite liked it.

Beer and curry eh...!

The poor guy had been living in London and hardly ever went out... so the deal is that I give a gastronomic tour of London in the process :)

News / Adult movie producers looking for 'actresses' in Poland or just a weirdo? [120]

Are you really telling us that you've not had a bit of five-finger action

I knew that would tickle you ;) .... shame nobody else got it

Living in London has broadened your horizons, yes?

What are you getting at there? What has London got to do with the price of fish?

Work / Is there jobs for a beauty therapist in Poland? [28]

Dr Elizabeth Dancey - fairly well respected dermatologist from the UK (I guess you'll have heard of her if you read magazines like Marie Claire and Brand New You etc) has recently opened a clinic in Krakow. I guess she's spotted a potential market to tap into.

successful pimps

If that's the way that you see it, then who am I to argue?

Dont just come into the effect of the inertia of freedom...and make it a reason of tresspasses over basic moral codes.

Are you really telling us that you've not had a bit of five-finger action with the lingerie section of your mum's copy of the Grattan catalogue or your sister's copy of Jackie?

UK, Ireland / All That Manners Business [I'm Polish, moved to UK as an au pair.] [87]

Something tells me you sound like a bit of a porker ?

No at all. Read her post properly - it's the timings that are throwing her... I experienced the reverse when I was living in Germany. I'd eat a massive lunch, much more than I'd eat in the UK. And then I'd eat a large meal in the evening. But I can assure you that a porker I ain't.

Wyspi - you're doing fine... some of the comments from this woman are pretty short-sighted. Sounds like they have nothing to do with you being Polish or any cross-cultural issues. Maybe she is anxious that you are taking her little boy away from her.

What does Joe say to all of this?

This thread is really getting out of hand...

1. I am 99% certain that that the incident that the OP describes is just some random perv, and I would even go so far as to doubting that the chap was even American.

2. Similar things happen all the time. When I was in the 6th form (about 16 / 17), there was one girl who was desparate to be a model. She was approached by a guy who claimed to be a model / talent scout... turned out that she had a nasty experience.

3. I'm not surprised that the poor girl was shaken up after that experience. She is entitled to work without harrasment. Anyone who has no sympathy for her is, quite frankly, a knob.

4. There is nothing wrong with porn - each to their own and all that.

5. The adult entertainment industry would almost certainly have more credible / low-key means of recruiting.
