UK, Ireland / Here comes the Anti-Immigration marches.... [114]

I don't think that I am a racist but I'm coming to the conclusion that I have become a numbersist.

I have always been a scroungersist

UK, Ireland / (NO RASISM OR STEREOTYPING BTW) WHO IS POLISH IN THE UK AND ON BENEFITS? [46]

Have the restrictions on other non-E.U. immigration become stricter?.

The new points system is designed for just this reason SeanBM. Up until now I would say it has become easier for non EU migrants as the system of appeals, assylum etc has just been creaking at the seams.

Work / How much does a Commercial Pilot earn in particular Wizzair pilot [3]

any information would be great

There's a bit about pilot entry on their web site Ez under about us......

I'd be surprised if any of us could add more, though there is a guy from the US who I believe is a 767 pilot so he may be able to give you some good general info. He stops by fairly often.

they may have let them come here , but if they didnt take the jobs, my family wouldnt be worse off

Oh right - so they were supposed to come here to do what other than work then?

Immigration is a result of government policy. Don't like it? Elect a party that will rein in immigration then - but don't blame the Polish or the Czechs or the Estonians. Most of them work here, often doing jobs that the Brits wouldn't do and the vast majority pay tax & NI into our economy. Yes there are immigrants milking the benefits system, just as there are countless thousands of bone idle Brits who have been doing it for far, far longer. Most of the immigrants milking the system are not from central Europe anyway.

at least if britons are milking the system they are milking there own country's system

No dear, they're milking the friggin hard work of the people of this country who do get up in the morning and work hard. I'm pissed off supporting layabouts to be honest, irrespective of what country they come from.

Love / Dilemma, Flight School or beautiful polish women????? [19]

The problem is that i will have to train for 18 months in Oxford, 6 of which will be in Arizona America.

Six months apart is no big deal if your relationship is strong enough. It took me four years to get my wife to be out of Poland and in that time I saw her three times!

No doubt you have discussed your plans with her. Her opinion is worth more than any of ours.

Good luck.

News / Time Capsule: What would you like to tell them about Poland and yourself? [3]

I really have no idea why I started this thread and I have even less idea why I am continuing

"And a river of green is sliding unseen beneath the trees,
Laughing as it passes through the endless summer making for the sea."

Sometimes the destination is not clear at first.

For me I would like the future dwellers to know how my perceptions of Poland changed in the space of four short days many years ago. For them to understand the pride of a people who had been through adversity. I hope that they would still see it then. Cultures are important preservation targets.

Nice thread SeanBM. I will have to give it some more thought and prepare a proper answer one day.

Travel / An experience on the train in Warsaw [30]

Cheers...makes feel whole lot better!!

Glad to help:)

I had a similar bogus officialdom scam tried on me in Warsaw a few years back by a guy impersonating a police officer. Luckily for me it was amateur night and it ended in a farcical way.

Sure? You were his mark to be ripped off for some ready cash by trying to scare you into paying up on false pretences. As soon as they saw the cops they did a runner. It was nothing to do with his position just ripping off a target. More likely he wanted the address to send his mates round to collect a few more 'contributions' from you.

UK, Ireland / Danio (vanilla) yoghurt on UK market - help!!!! [25]

I even enjoy a pot of Danio from time to time ;)

Now that's just plain cruel Seanus. The poor lady will be sitting there imagining the spoon dipping into the delicious Danio, the spoon being raised slowly to the mouth, that first mouth watering hint of vanilla bursting through....

Shame on you.

Work / Moving to Poland in April 2009, need to find IT-related job! suggestions? [21]

Olito,

How much experience do you have outside of your academic studies? Finding a 'grad/post grad' starting post will be more difficult than if you have have had real working experience with the bigger employers who would be more likely to accept your lack of speaking Polish.

UK, Ireland / UK In Recession - It's Official [26]

too many people are prone to negativity

If anybody mentions the R word they should pay a fine into the communal drinking kitty. Fines will increase exponentially during the day. This will promote optimism and also give me some peace and quiet to finish this report on how my supplier may be going bust as a result of the Recession...

Doh - 50p in.

Law / Linux, Unix, and Open Source in Poland [119]

szarlotka, you may live in a world where you have the luxury to play with systems in your bedroom, but in the real world, at least in my profession Linux is totally impractical. Most translators if not all use CAT tools, which are all designed for MS. When Linux pays some interest to the industry then and only then I will take a look at it.

Nice attack but read my post again. I was agreeing with you.

As for the bedroom bit it made me chuckle. My technical background is in the development of OS (MVS), TP Monitors (CICS) and RDMBS (lead designer of the optimiser for DB2). As for Linux I am currently running a programme that has approximately 40 servers (web, app, database, authentication, Directory Services, FTP etc) running Red Hat. In the general purpose server world Linux has come of age. In your market the apps you need are not supported. Which is what I was saying.

Law / Linux, Unix, and Open Source in Poland [119]

The inability to work with Word markup,

To paraphrase an American president - "Its all about the applications stupid". IT history is littered with superior products that failed because the apps were better on other platforms. Ingres was far superior to Oracle as an RDBMS but Oracle produced application development tools and had superior marketing so they won. From a techncial viewpoint Windows has always been relatively poor but apps and amrketing will win.

Law / Linux, Unix, and Open Source in Poland [119]

as they have jumped into the commercialism bed

It's just a maturing of Linux really. Big corporations trust Linux variations to run multi server applications but need the support to be readily available so the likes of Red Hat produce enterprise editions and charge for it. The cost of ownership is still less than the old mainframe/Unix models. For individuals and SMEs it is a cheap way of computing but for the big boys you don't want to rely upon your friendly device driver writing geek being sober enough to fix your problems. Still a way to go for open source RDBMS offerings in my view.

Real Estate / Real Estate hits a new low in Poland [86]

estate agents are throwing themselves from tall buildings (unfortunately that last bit is wistful thinking).

Ha ha.

Seems like emminently sound advice all round from Harry. The long term view is what is required so if you can afford to tie up capital then get out there and haggle.... but not with my flat though.

Genealogy / need help finding someone in poland but don't have much information. [10]

The university may pass on a message so that the decision to contact you back or not is his and his alone. Writing would be best. I'm sure someone on here can provide you with the best contact if you tell us the uni name.

Edit - slow again. Nice one Lir

History / Mass Grave in Malbork [34]

I do not know who did this. I do know that even with full evidence some people's views will never change. That just piles sadness upon sadness for me. Just my view.

Travel / White Water Rafting in Poland [5]

My friend did this trip a few years ago: infohub.com/TRAVEL/SIT/sit_pages/17778.html

I remember he wasn't overly impressed with the white water cos a) the river levels were low at the time and b) he comes from British Columbia where rafting is pretty extreme in places. He said the view were great though.
