News / Does Poland count in Europe or is it ignored? [427]

I thought they wore those ortalion coats with padded foam or artificial warmer. I was misinformed then. Anyway, we had duffel coats in Scotland. Very unsightly but they kept me warm as a kid.

Anyway, I think we are miles off topic. Silly question, Poland counts but it has only been in the EU for just over 5 years so it hasn't made a telling impact. Every country counts as they sometimes need help implementing EU Directives which have direct effect. Also, they must take part in scoping meetings as part of EU Environmental Law etc etc. The principle of subsidiarity, formerly Art 5 of the Treaty, requires cooperation between the relevant players so Poland has to count. The EU cannot afford to have stray dogs ;)

UK, Ireland / 13,000 Polish births this year, in the UK [180]

Nursing is the same in most countries, Poland is no different from Scotland. Equal pay for equal work and proportionality don't seem to apply here. They are cheated.

I know a bit about this as my Dad is a nurse teacher. I vividly remember him fuming over the pay cuts and the inception of General Management. He was a Labour man (old Labour but not quite a hardline unionist) so took issue with their privatisation and undercutting ways. Social care/care in the community were areas that he felt particularly strong about. They were left wing ideas and would always remain so for him.

Nurses are the pillar of our community in many ways, in health terms. More and more doctors just rubber stamp and get the patient out of there. This rings true in Britain anyway.

UK, Ireland / Belfast Telegraph won't print my comment. [133]

I know this. I'm aware that their salaries jumped up a lot from 15 years ago. For me also, they are not at the bottom of the ladder at all. There is some rubbish that needs to be taken to dumps by private citizens but they take all the rest.

Inferior?? What do you mean? I am not the sort to call others that, that's not my way. If you had the chance to hear me in class, you'd hear that I respect people's status. How? Well, by seeing everyone as having a role and not placing people into superior and inferior categories.

Where would we be without garbage collectors and the 'lower' rungs of the ladder?

Delboy, I'm not calling you anything. You know what you want and you are going for it so good on ya!!

Yes, we should be able to express certain things. As a libertarian, I believe in this. Still, it's freedom of speech within reason. Freedom of association within reason. I could go on but you get the picture.

I encourage people to speak up, don't get me wrong on that.

More personal? What do you mean?

True, Shelley, freedom is constrained by many pieces of legislation.

Delboy, I'm just saying that they deal with things differently and don't always play ball but you can't waltz in and expect changes. They are rigid sometimes.

That's a cliche and inaccuracy, aphrodisiac. We don't live in a free world at all and I could write 5 books on why not.

Freedoms are rarely absolute.

Shelley has a point, Delboy. You can't waltz into another country and start telling them what's what. Locals have enough of a problem doing that and they can vote.

How would Tusk feel if I bombarded him with all manner of letters on his governance?

Some would say, Delboy ;)

There was all kinds of provocation and death threats issued if they come over to Chorzów. How sad!

News / Does Poland count in Europe or is it ignored? [427]

Do you? Do you think I just plucked it from the sky or do you think I researched it? I know who the Cossacks were, I was talking about the hats which are associated with Russia. I didn't say if it was an accurate association. Some Brits link Germany with sausages and Russia with vodka. That's a disservice to Poland.

And what of those that didn't have fur then?

Yeah, I was Seanny. I can tell you that more happened than met the eye. My student knows some of the hools that were there.

UK, Ireland / The paradox of Polish drivers getting car insurance in the UK [14]

That's very strange, spiritus. It's like the same crap with jobs. Sorry, not enough exp. Well, I need exp to get more exp you daft twat.

She'll be worse after 12 months as she hasn't had steady practice on the roads. They maybe don't see foreigners as a safe bet as many come and go rather easily. That's more likely to be the truth.

UK, Ireland / Friend told "just allow your son to forget Polish" by school. [96]

Some English teachers are getting help from Polish bilingual helpers but it isn't enough. There needs to be a closer look at this.

Please remember that the welfare of the child is paramount and that squabbling resolves very little. Forgetting Polish would be wrong. The strive towards bilingual status would save a lot of hassle in the future.

News / Does Poland count in Europe or is it ignored? [427]

Hypothetically speaking, I'm not into hypotheticals.

Torq, I doubt that. It was a symbol of Russia and wasn't denounced. It was used for flashing wealth among the well-to-do wannabe aristocrats (glorified peasants).

News / Does Poland count in Europe or is it ignored? [427]

For the record, no. I'm not a fan of either of the two and it doesn't make sense to talk of "triumph" here.

I teach and if I happen to do that within the framework of some political system, then so be it as it's merely coincidental.

News / Does Poland count in Europe or is it ignored? [427]

Torq, I meant that Poland is rapidly developing a nouveau-riche culture very quickly. So many have cashed in from capitalism and used options not available under communism.

Fur was used as a status symbol and it was even paradied as such in Polish programs. There were other options than fur, ortalion for example.

Clothes doesn't form any part of identity? That's BS! Cossack and fur were undeniably associated with Russia.

Ah well, it didn't have a clear one for so long. Women wearing fur jackets in communism, a symbol of Russia, just to show their wealth.

That's very sad!!

Still, there is a new-found identity!!

History / UKRAINIAN GENOCIDE AGAINST POLES DOWNPLAYED [57]

Pol3, how dare you comment on a situation you clearly know nothing about!!? You are a media hound who doesn't look beneath the surface. I'll get to the thread in a minute but do not make out like the Serbs impaled or beheaded others. That was done to them by the Mujas. Yes, Mladic was guilty of genocide but that isn't prolonged torture. He had his men line up Muslims and systematically kill them. Short treatment! RIP to those Muslims btw!!!

I have a simple comment for you. You should have dealt with it then. Stop the moaning and muckraking, they are long dead and nothing can bring them back. Start waking up to your frickin insularity, stop crying wolf/poor me and quit the sob stories. This was a thread for almost 70 years ago.

Ukraine is your friend now so stop souring the milk and kicking up dust!

News / 14 year old rape victim from Warsaw denied abortion! [348]

Vetala, that's just not right that getting rid of a foetus from a rape victim makes the life unimportant. You said it yourself, "but it's also a HUGE cultural, psychological and social burden". I agree with that so why should a woman be lumbered with this burden when she didn't want the baby in the first place? It'd be a constant reminder of her harrowing torment. The life still holds importance to many, just not to her and you have to draw that distinction.

Dariusz, you didn't elaborate on unwanted/unplanned. In my eyes, there isn't a huge difference in this specific case. The foetus spawned from rape is, in 99% of cases, both. There is no real dichotomy to talk of in relation to the above.

I'll just say, as an added extra, that we should keep an open mind rather than be universalistic. Meaningless crap? I don't think so. There is some variation as to the age of consent to sex. In Scotland, 16 is the age that we deem children (as they still are in the eyes of the law) sufficiently aware. That says something as our age of criminal responsibility was 8. Vetala alluded to the scores of 14-year olds having kids. Here's where the open mind comes in. A Maltese person may pour scorn over a Spaniard but we need to understand national sentiment. The age of consent in Malta is 18 (or was) and 13 in Spain (or was). As undesirable as having a kid at 14 is, much of Europe and, I hazard a guess, much of the rest of the world must hold up their hands and realise that we have inadvertently and, sometimes not, created that predicament.

Finally, the above could have an analogy to driving. Show people a limit of 30mph and they will drive above 40 (mostly). Even with a police presence, up to 33mph. It is a human tendency to take a little more and break the rules. The same as with youngsters, they'll chance their mit.
