Language / Why do people want to study Polish? [90]

in a polish word we stress all vowels (and even if you do not stress a syllable, a vowel is "fully" pronounced).

Don't you think that you say here is funny :)
The fact is that in Polish the stress is on syllable only. That fact that all vowels within syllable may (but not always are) pronounced doesn;t mean they are stressed, as stress is a relative, not an absolute quality of a sound.

much easier to produce "th" than any english vowel

I guess you meant a consonant.

UK, Ireland / If I was to move to Poland from Ireland... [92]

When in Moscow all those years ago and I had to listen to all those sad Poles who so hated England.

And now we have to listen to those Brits who so hate Poland.

Language / Names for days of the week and their meaning in Polish [15]

we always eat fish-pstrąg. This is a strong Polish tradition.

That is mostly typical of the Southern mountain region of Poland. The rest, in the 20th Century (and I hear now too) eat carp.

Language / Example differences between Polish and English [30]

When you will need me call me is better translated by If you need me give me a call
If I would have a car I would be happy is very strange English it should read-Idf I had a car I would be happy.
Where do you Poles get these starange setenses in English from?

He merely showed how Polish sentences would look in English if a Pole tried to follow Polish tense structure.

Correct versions are above those examples. Try to read people's post more carefully before jumping at them

I live in a five bedroomed house, which I own with two cars in front.

Does that mean that the cars are co-owners of the house?

Language / Names for days of the week and their meaning in Polish [15]

wigilia - a day preceding another day, usually a holiday. For instance "wigilia Nowego Roku" or "wigilia Bozego Narodzenia"
Wigilia - a day preceding Christmas Day, or a supper on the eve of Chritsmas Day.

The first meaning of the word doesn't seem to be that popular anymore, and may not be correctly understood by native Poles. The immediate association is rather with Christmas Eve.

Love / how can i get him to fall in love with me again? [43]

If all else fails, you could try to use some magic after all ;)

LOVE POTION TEA

1 pinch of rosemary
2 teaspoons of black tea
3 pinches thyme
3 pinches nutmeg
3 fresh mint leaves
6 fresh rose petals
6 lemon leaves
3 cups pure spring water
Sugar
Honey

To make another person fall in love with you, brew this tea on a Friday during a waxing moon (moving from empty to full).
Place all ingredients in an earthenware or copper tea kettle. Boil three cups of pure spring water and add to the kettle. Sweeten with sugar and honey, if desired.

Before drinking, recite this rhyme:

BY LIGHT OF MOON WAXING
I BREW THIS TEA
TO MAKE [lover's name] DESIRE ME.

Drink some of the tea and say:
GODDESS OF LOVE
HEAR NOW MY PLEA
LET [lover's name] DESIRE ME!
SO MOTE IT BE
SO MOTE IT BE

On the following Friday, brew another pot of the love potion tea and give some to the person you want to love you. He or she will soon begin to fall in love with you.

Language / Accent marks in Polish language [22]

Can anyone tell me if you need to but accents etc on words if they are in capitals?

Yes, but these are called diacritics, or diacritical marks (signs), as they have nothing to do with accent.

Food / Questions on Polish food: Oscypek and Zurek. Also zeberka. [18]

I've seen mushrooms, potatoes, egg, kielbasa ...

There are some reginal varieties.
Make sure though your selection of kilebasa doesn't introduce to too strong flavor. Personally, I'd avoid "mysliwska". Wiejska seems best for my taste, although I think that finely chopped bacon is the most neutral and gentle, and preserves the original flavor of zurek itself.

News / A Pole to start the HIV AIDS epidemic? [52]

I know that there is a very high level of Aids in Eastern Europe and that Poland does have a higher than usual level. It might be due to the fact that they sleep around a lot and procreate like rabbits

Care to give us some numbers? Or are we supposed to just accept from you yet another set of lies?

News / Darwins theory of Evolution in Polish schools [59]

In Roman CAtholicism, the pope is God's direct representative on Earth. Therefore, what the Pope says is true and it is God's will. Simple as that. To oppose it is to oppose God himself (herself?) Of course, overzealous Catholics have their own say in the matter and are thus blasphemous :)

Now, straight from the horse's (oh forgive me Father!) mouth:

New knowledge has led to the recognition that the theory of evolution is more than a hypothesis. It is indeed remarkable that this theory has been progressively accepted by researchers, following a series of discoveries in various fields of knowledge. The convergence, neither sought nor fabricated, of the results of work that was conducted independently is in itself a significant argument in favor of the theory.John Paul II

That doesn't mean, howver, that all is lost, as the Vatican's position has been that the Theory of Evolution, while the best theory a man can buy today, is not the end of it all, and should be taught while maintainging respect for the dignity of the human being (whatever that means). So God is still at the root of Everything, but evolution is not just some lie.

Moreover, the Vatican supports the teaching of the Theory of Evolution, so it is taught in most influential Catholic schools (for instance The Jesuit University in NYC, NY, aka Fordham University). It is also taught in the Vatican University. The Vatican's poisition is that TE is science, unlike "intelligent design".

According to L’Osservatore Romano:

[intelligent design] isn’t how science is done,” he wrote. “If the model proposed by Darwin is deemed insufficient, one should look for another, but it’s not correct from a methodological point of view to take oneself away from the scientific field pretending to do science.

That was just another statement in support of the likes of The article echoed similar arguments by the Vatican’s chief astronomer, the Rev. George Coyne, who said “intelligent design” wasn’t science and had no place in school classrooms.

Now, the question is, who the f**ck is Poland's deputy minister of education to oppose the Pope and his "generals". Yet again, someone decides to be "holier than though"

USA, Canada / USA, the nation of immigrants [30]

by the way isn't Canada also a nation of immigrants?

Very much so.
In 1980 over 60% of Canadian citizens were born outside Canada. The numbers changed and I think it's about 40% now.

Life / What type and brand of cars do Polish people like? [51]

is it true that VW isn't as reliable and value for money as they used to be? Friend of ours has lot of problems with his VW.

It seems to be true. VW's reliability ratings seem to be rather poor here in North America. The company itself recognized the problem with the change of their CEO in the recent months. They now ponder the idea of opening a manufacturing plant in the US or Canada, considering the disappointments with the Mexican one.

So it all may have to do with where some vehicles are manufactured. For instance Ford; I had a the misfortune to have owned two. No more. Never again. They tend to have issues with the front wheel drive.

However, I drove Fords in Europe and they seemed better than American equivalents.
