News / Superstitions about chimney sweepers and snake in Polish gardens [52]

why are the Polish, Polish??

That is a good question, Poland has been attacked many times by many different peoples from all round the world and still they are Polish, you could write a book on that, I am sure.

There is big probability that you saw a lizard

Wow, they are really beautiful, did you take those photos?

4. I was told when I brought a bottle of vodka to a party that I had to drink first, my friend said (maybe) jokingly that it is a tradition in case it is poisoned, is there a story about that from the time of your Kings? Also you drink a shot and fill it for the next person, anything in that?

I know some questions are going to be silly but that is the nature of not knowing. I also know I could google all this stuff but I am a people person....on a computer too

good luck

ha ha ha, ok is there anything else you can tell me about chimney sweepers that adds to this?

for which you need a......serum injection.

It didn't bite me or anything, I also thought I saw a lizard yesterday, is that possible? I did not catch a good look at it but the way it ran was like a newt.

3. There are lakes near Krakow with sandy beaches, was this whole area covered in water hundreds and thousands of years ago? also there is a dessert in Poland, WTF?

That is my first time using WTF, does it mean "what the feck?"?

The snake was brown in colour but i did not see it's head

News / Superstitions about chimney sweepers and snake in Polish gardens [52]

I have many questions about Poland.

1. Chimney sweepers wear black and you are supposed to hold your button if you see them, why?

2. I saw a snake in my garden yesterday, are there any poisonous ones and which are most common?, (for a lot of you this might be normal for me it is something to write home about, as there are no snakes in Ireland).

I have drawn a blank but I will post more questions when I think of them and please feel free to post your own questions

News / Will Poles fight with pride alongside The Gay Army? [22]

I'm pretty open-minded myself, but I do realize that we should think about the kids sometimes!

The problem with this conversation is that you Arien are Dutch.
I say problem because the rest of Europe is in the dark ages in comparison to the Netherlands in many ways sexuality, use of soft drugs, prostitution, euthanasia etc...

I had the pleasure of living in Amsterdam and I enjoyed it immensely, it opened my eyes to a lot of things coming from "good auld catholic Ireland", it was a real shock.

I agree about the children.
Why shouldn't gays be allowed to kill others and themselves in wars, like everyone else?

Life / Antisemitism in Poland; is it safe for a Jew to live in Poland? [193]

The word "antisemitism" was coined in the late 19th century by jew-haters who wanted to give their ideology a pseudo-scientific aura.

Cool, thanks for the reply.
Sounds about right, I mean it amazes me how humans can do such terrible things to other humans. I heard before that soldiers would not see their victims as human and giving a group a "scientific" word and further "proving" their inferiority as in the case of the Nazis would make it easier to treat people as animals, it is messed up.

Why is calling someone a Jew demeaning?

I thought southern was joking, political correctness and all.

Who wouldn't be? Most of western history and religious culture seems to be wrapped up in our story

Are we not part of each other's story?

News / 7 Poles in a Fiat Uno? [38]

7 Poles in a Fiat Uno?

If you think that is impressive you should go to Cambodia. There are 10 people on a moped, driving the wrong way down a chaotic road.

Its fashionable to car share so Poles must be the most fashionable minority group in the UK.

It is economical and does not harm the environment as much as one person to every space wagon.

Life / Poznan. The most hated city in Poland? [21]

Poznan. The most hated city in Poland?

I have never heard that.
And people from Krakow think they are better than Warsaw but I think it is the same in every country?
I went to Poznan twice, I did not really like it, there were beggars and it looked German (for obvious reasons).

Life / Antisemitism in Poland; is it safe for a Jew to live in Poland? [193]

I still do not understand why we even have the word Antisemitism. (hostility toward or discrimination against Jews as a religious, ethnic, or racial group)

We do not have a word for hostile twards Muslims or Eskimos etc.
Or at least if we do have a word for it then I am not aware of it and it is not in common usage.

So my question is why do we (in English) have this word?.
I can hypothesise but maybe someone else can explain it to me?

Life / Belgian moving to Krakow, need practical info [38]

Do you live in Krakow too? Or the region? What made you move to Poland?

Hi, again, yes I live south of Krakow up the mountains, you must come and see the mountains, it is only about an hour and a half drive from Krakow and you can get a bus for a couple of Euro. I used to live in Krakow for two years 6 years ago and I still work here now and again.

I came here the first time, quite by chance. I basically did a teaching English course in Dublin on my way to Japan and a Polish lady asked me to come work for her here in Krakow, she paid for my flights, hooked me up with accommodation the lot really, I never did make it to Japan..... yet..... ha ha ha

Life / Belgian moving to Krakow, need practical info [38]

Hello dxx
And welcome to Polish Forum.
Krakow is a great city, you will love it.
1. Krakow is a university city, a huge amount of students, therefore I strongly recommend getting sorted with an apartment before September or else you could find it difficult to get a flat especially a nice one that is handy for going to work.

2. My advice is to take what you read about Poland with a pinch of salt (especially if the poster does not live here) things have changed dramatically, you can easily bring your car here, it will make orientation and life easier, the car crime here is not high, it is in some respects just another city. I'll put it this way if you survived Ireland you'll survive here, lol, I'm Irish.

3. Krakow is wonderful, it is a medieval city (look at a map of the centre of Krakow)
The castle on the hill with a river meandering around it and an old wall and mote encompassing a really beautiful market square, you will not be let down by the architecture. But I recommend living close to your work place for obvious reasons.

4. I think Krakow is a very safe city but like anywhere you go in life keep your wits about you and you will be fine.

Best regards,

Life / What and why would anyone need a PESEL Number? [6]

I had to provide my "fake" PESEL so I could be entered into the computerised system. The ladies at the desk made it up for me on my first visit :)

I have had this situation myself, I do not think Polish people "believe" in all these numbers, do not get me wrong a good Pole has their paper work in order but they they will ask you your date of birth and Wham! you have a fake PESEL number.

In Ireland I remember having a P60/P45 (Same thing I think), which is the old form that you get when you leave a job. That is the only number I remember having. We do not even have post codes ha ha ha.

"Where am I?"
"In the Village."
"What do you want?"
"Information."
"Whose side are you on?"
"That would be telling…. We want information. Information! INFORMATION!"
"You won't get it."
"By hook or by crook, we will."
"Who are you?"
"The new Number Two."
"Who is Number One?"
"You are Number Six."
"I am not a number — I am a free man!"
(Laughter from Number Two.)

Travel / Ryanair cancelling flights to Poland at short notice [55]

Actually, now that you mention it, I have flown return into Gatwich and out of Heatrow many times, an important thing to remember is from door to door, how much does it cost. I have really mashed myself up by not including the door to door.

had a £30 flight to Berlin (Germany)
£40 Krakow (Poland)

You should give a destination for that to make sense, no?
I mean £30 flight to Berlin from Mozambique is very cheap but from Berlin, well that is just silly

Travel / Ryanair cancelling flights to Poland at short notice [55]

Thanks for the low down peterwag.

But in the current crisis an airline like Ryanair

I do not think Ryanair are a normal airline, I meant that "normal" people can book cheaper in advance with most airlines, it pays to book in advance. Ryanair=cheap last minute unreliable, goodness help you if you have a connecting flight, type thing.

Didnt some airline company go bust after they took all the bookings from people about 4 years ago, it was for Christmas.

hedge their fuel

Please explain this term.

that will teach us what? if there is a choice, anyone NORMAL will look for a cheaper flight

I think "NORMAL" people book in advance and can get good deals with most airlines.

I think the MTV generation quickly forget when it cost an arm and a leg to travel and there were still complaints. Ryanair revolutionised air travel in Europe and now we need the next step in Evolution...

Wow am i in a bad mood or what

No, I think you are spot on!
Since when has cheap meant good?
I do agree when/if i happens to me I am angry, but companies have to make profit, simple as. I remember before cheap flights, bus loads of Poles slogging it 14 hours to England. how things change.

Travel / IS THERE A FERRY TO RIGA FROM POLAND...? [12]

Hey wildrover,
I was trying to find ferries from the Baltic states to Norway, ended bad. The ferries did not exist or were at extortionist prices. I will be the first to admit that I am bad at using the computer and I ended up driving, which was good fun (no speeding fines) hehehe. Next time I am going to Lithuania from Krakow I could even give you a lift to Vilnius? I should be going there very soon. And from there it is only a 4 hour drive to Riga.

Life / Polish gliders [10]

Lukasz

Excellent post, never knew this, I know nothing of aviation.
I see people para glide here a couple of miles from my window.
I would love to handglide, it has always been a dream of mine.
And these gliders are EXACTLY what I would like, bungee jumping and sky diving would not be my thing, but to soar through the ski like a bird makes my hairs stand on end.

So many dreams so little time.

Travel / Most Amazing places in Poland. What does it for you? [90]

I went to Hel up north, everyone always told me to go to hell!, there were bunkers and all sorts, left alone, not very "touristy" but interesting as hell. excuse the pun, I also love driving through Poland and at petrol stations you can see a tank or a aeroplane obviously from WW2, this is a very interesting country.

Life / What and why would anyone need a PESEL Number? [6]

Hello,

I have not got a PESEL number, I do not think I need one. I know the government is thinking of getting rid of them but I will not hold my breath on that one.

Considering that there are 2 Million Poles who have just left and I am sure a lot of them did not deregister.
This is obviously some sort of communist control because it serves no purpose as far as I can see.
I find my passport works well for everything and anything else I buy through the company, so what and why would anyone need a PESEL number?

Life / Poles need to learn to save! [73]

Is this really out of touch with reality? In Norway we have returned bottles for as long as I can remember. You pay a little extra for the bottle, and get it back when you return it. You can return them at just about any store. Saves both money and the enviroment.

Ponta florska?
You can return some of the beer bottles here in Poland to most shops that sell them, you pay a little more and they give you back the money when you return them but only for a certain size, maybe it'll catch on to the other sizes.

But I have not seen the numerous machines that you can use in Norway anywhere else.

The Scots are not frugal? Come off it

Don't Scots put a fork in the sugar bowl?

Just a joke, I don't know if it is true but their are many jokes about the frugal Scots.
