UK, Ireland / Great Britain - which countries does it include? [95]

OK I have a question, its not connected wit Poland really but since this forum has so many visitors from Isles, they can explain me this:

What is Great Britain? Does GB include: England, Scotland, Wales, NI? How about Ireland? Can I call english, scottish etc british or only english are british? When I think about Isles should I say that bigger Island is GB and smaller one Ireland? I never really understood this.

i will keep it simple Ola, but i think the question has been answered now. ask me again is still not sure.

great britain or britain or mainland britain ( whichever way you put it, though it's refered to as Britain my most people) is england, scotland and wales and a couple of surrounding smaller isles. not ireland or the isle of man or jersey. and you can call all these people british

it was THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND ( both north and south )1801 and THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND 1922...

united kingdom consisting chiefly of the island of great britain(england, scotland, wales) and northern ireland.

it became the united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland in 1921 after the rest of ireland became autonomous as the irish free state.

autonomous=possessing a large degree of self-government or independant of others.
the united kingdom in this case

has that cleared it up for you Ola

if not just say xxxxxxx

Ok but the problem is that, as Shelley wrote, northen irish have british passports but NI isnt a part of GB according to your sources Simuk. Are they just called british because they belong to UK but in fact they shouldnt be called british because they dont belong to Great Britain?

Or maybe all UK members are called british.

that is good point. it is the united kingdom of great britain and northern irleland ( that is the full name for this topic of " debate"..........yes

my passport is " united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland" ( and i'm scottish)

if your from northern..reland your passport is " THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND

because as we have now established both scotland and northern ireland a long with wales and england are part of the UNITED KINGDOM. so everyone from northern ireland , england, wales and scotland's passport will be the same

they dont have british passports . they have uk --understand
because on our passports it says great britain and NORTHERN IRELAND (united kingdon of )
though it is the other way round.

i do know some people from n.ireland who call themselves british. not irish.
but this is not technically right.

and the queen is the head of state for the united kingdon of great britian and northern ireland.

any other questions Ola

and krysia there is no way Ola is too intelligent for me:)

UK, Ireland / Great Britain - which countries does it include? [95]

ola you seem very concerned about this lol

but if you asked 50 per cent of the people on this island which consists of england, scotland, wales . they would probably give you a different interpretation

so...........

yes british are scottish and english and northern ireland. i dont actually think you will get any people from n. ireland saying they are irish.

sorry but i have to change what i said

great britain> england, scotland , wales and n. ireland ,wales << united kingdom

mainland britain which is an island> england, wales, scotland
#
i always thought that united kingdom and great britain were just the same

if you really want to know exactly i will look it up for you ]

get back to me please
