History / Poland war propaganda poster - can anyone explain this picture? [292]

Note that here Soviets are put in one line with Western Allies.

how so?
I do not really like the style of the western allies propaganda, bit too boring in comparison

Please note my preference in style has absolutely no similarities with my political presences .

WOW, Crnogorac7, they are interesting.
Style wise also.

They probably belong on the "What do you hate about England and English people? " thread but the style is kind of similar

I always liked the Russian communist propaganda, the style of it (I forget the name of the style??)
Very strong very powerful

Life / Public transport on Christmas Day in Poland [10]

Look up PKP on the internet that should tell you about the trains, so that'd be most of the journey.

Rabka-Zdrój is a lovely town.

There are loads of private local companies that drive from Krakow down this direction, unfortunately I do not think they are on the internet and i really do not know how to find that information out but the state buses ought to be listed on the net just google PKS for them.

Good luck

Life / PAYING TO TAKE A PISS IN POLAND, it's BIZARRE [77]

If you after a few beers which cost minimum 7-8 PLN each, cannot spare 1 PLN to go to the toilet - now that it is very sad.
I perfectly understand the pub-owners who see all these people coming on, who do not drink even a glass of water but use the sanitary (for which the pub-owner pays for the maintenance).

A beer cost 5PLN here.
And I have never seen this in a pub, just public toilets.

Taken the p1ss by not payin for the p1ss

Ok lets compare it to Philadelphia.

Why? because you are there? that's not a good reason, we could compare Philadelphia to a million other places, it would not make sence or be constructive to the subject, wouldn't you agree?

Anyway, it is Sunday, i will wait until at least tomorrow to talk shop ;)

History / Poland war propaganda poster - can anyone explain this picture? [292]

I will go to the museum again and look at what is written on each picture, truth be known I actually went there to see a Salvidor Dali exhibition. And I took these photos with my phone.

I am still unsure, because of the amount of replies, if they are from the Nazis, communist or Poland, perhaps all three? we will see.

The first picture, England being blamed could be.

A) Not having entered the war quickly enough, to cut collaboration with them from the Nazis or commies.
B) After the war, England signing the secret treaty which effectively meant that Poland became Eastern Block, again perhaps by the Nazis or the Poles.

C)England not giving back the Gold that belonged to Poland, therefore the poster could be by the Poles or the commies.

Which kind of leaves me almost exactly where I started off, although I did not know about the gold.

History / Where did the stereotype of Polish people being stupid come from? [131]

Where did the stereotype of Polish people being stupid come from?

I have never heard of such a stereotype, is this only in America? or is it in England too?
There used to be the same stereotype for Irish people in England but apart from me, that has changed.

Life / Polish fireplaces have glass doors. How to clean them? [16]

100 PLN / m3.

I only ever had coal fires in Ireland how many M3s would it to last a week, if you keep the oxygen low?
Actually it was polish coal most of the time.

Sounds as though you were lucky not to get seriously burned.

I was, Major loss of street cred,
Fecken egit i am, I kept thinking after, how obvious it was that that would happen.
I'll be grand though, ah sure, you're only young once but you'll be stupid for the rest of your life ha ha ha....

What are you burning sean?

Except for my face? ha ha ha, jesus it was a mess, i now have a suntan. I wear spectacles so me eyes are grand but me lips are fairly sore ha ha ha. The fire ball was huge, and my face was there to meet it. ha ha ha

Tree wood and the old fence from the house.
I' am still renovating the house, it's coming along well.

Do you cut the trees yourself or pay for them? if so how much do you pay?

Real Estate / Current state of the property market in Krakow [135]

swarming with Polish buyers -

This is a massive part of it, foreign buyers are definitely in the minority here.
I am building houses for the Polish market here. I see a market for inexpensive houses at 4 bed, 120 M2 with a garage and a garden. People will be abe to sell their apartments closer to Krakow and buy a family house 15 minute drive to Krakow with the new road in April.

Poland in many regards is a carbon copy of Ireland.

Except prices are not ludicrously high.
And everyone well knew it, how could Dublin have been more expensive than London?
Just on this subject, I have not heard Tusk's "we are going to be the next Ireland" slogan in a while...ha ha ha

The big cities in Poland are experiencing population growth due to inward migration. Why inward migration? Because the cities are where the highly paid jobs are.

Just to add to this point, there are about 38 million people in Poland, the are only 2 million in Warsaw and 1.5 Million in Krakow.
Now compare that percentage wise to Ireland population about 4 million, Dublin Approx 1.3 million, same for London etc...
My point is people are going to the cities but it can not be compared to Dublin, London or Florida.

I am an investor and also work for other investors. I work both here and in Lithuania, there is no comparison even between these two countries, Lithuania is feeling the bite of the credit crunch big time.

And it is true that there were 110% mortgages and that they are changing it to 70%, which of course is a good idea and not a moment too late for the majority of Poles.

I hope that Krakow will go from strength to strength.

Real Estate / Current state of the property market in Krakow [135]

Floridian villa complexes with large clubhouses and swimming pools look great for about 2 years.

But what a great two years, ha ha ha
Have you considered buying over there WB?
There is a high maintenance bill there.

who wants to live in Florida anyway.

Old people, and disney world, MGM studios, sea world etc are good for a laugh but not enough to make me want to move there. I doubt if you can let it out but I do not know.

comparison state side, that would probably be New York.

What's it like there?

Real Estate / Current state of the property market in Krakow [135]

People told me last year that the Polish stock market is immune or might fall 10% - it has fallen 50%.

You are saying it has fallen, it has not and probably will not, it is completely unrealistic.

I would buy a flat in Krakow for 1800 pln a meter.

Where in Krakow?
Do you know what you are talking about? or are you just giving us the American equivalent?
You must be because it'd be impossible to find something that cheap.

Have you been to Poland and been involved in real estate here?. I doubt it, perhaps you ought to research it.
If you know something and want to talk about American real estate, sure by all means, I would be interested to hear what it is like on the ground over there.

If I can, I would like to point out that when you are home and it is snowing, you generally think it is snowing everywhere But it isn't :)

have you had a sweep check the chimney ?

ha ha ha, it's new.
I used it last night for the first time. I will sort it out, somehow.

pianki

Cheers, I can't remember the last time I roasted them over a fire but it was years ago

Warning!!! Uwaga!!!

If you do get a fire place with a door and you decide to get it going again and you open the door, throw on the petrol, close the door find the lighter and then open the door and light it, a massive fireball will burn your face.

The chamber obviously fills with fumes and then when opened and light it, WOOOM!!! Fire ball!.
No prizes for figuring out how I found that out this morning.
There are easier and less painful ways of getting a tan and a hair cut:)

Also, when the fire is at the right temp, sit next to it, open the door, stick the poker in a slice of bread and make toast. You can also toast marshmallows etc. Yummy.

If I open the door the smoke bellows out, there is a (removable) steel ceiling in the fire place, so the heat doe not escape so fast. Do you remove that first?.

Also I have never seen marshmallows in this country, I thought they didn't have them? what are they called in Polish?

It only looks pretty in summer.

No point in looking good but feeling cold, i get you.
I just thought I could have the best of both worlds.

The glass broke when I transported the fireplace here.
Just bought new glass (smoke goes all over the place if there's no glass)
It was expensive though, 224 PLN but they said it was ceramic glass and it can take 700 degrees. I say expensive because i never paid for it before so any amount would have been too much.

Life / Polish fireplaces have glass doors. How to clean them? [16]

Yeah they are more effective at heating the place.
I am not going to try Vodka though, the whole place could go up :)

Burning wooden pellets and coal are very popular here, they have a stoves in the basement and they work on the combi-boiling system.
Very cheap to maintain, also I think Polish people like to be self-sufficient (on local and governmental level) and not so reliant on, oh say Russian gas for example :)

soapy water (washing up liquid) and one of those sponges you use for the pots n pans.

The soft side? would the scower not scratch the glass and make it more difficult to clean next time?

I've noticed that a big plasma tv also gives out plenty of heat.

ha ha ha

Life / Polish fireplaces have glass doors. How to clean them? [16]

People in Poland have closed fire places, with a glass door on them.
What is the best way to clean the glass, any home remedies? soda powder, lemon juice?
A lot of the things are different here in Poland because of the differences in temperature and humidity.
In Ireland I am used to an open fire place, I think we have them open because it is so humid, while Poland is dry and gets a lot colder so they need more heat, so they close them (no hanging your plasma T.V. over the fireplace here, I tell ya :)).

the war is the fault of the English.

How? I am assuming it is WW2, is it commenting that England did not react quickly enough or something?

I have more Propaganda or politically motivated statements but I did not understand this one.

puercoespin

Come on, tell us about it then.

Here another, note Wara does not mean war but something like "go away".

z_darius, there is this kind of "every sperm is sacred" thing with the old survival of the species debate.(nothing religiously)

I think you are a good debater but this does not make you right or wrong.
I appreciate that you are one of the few posters, who seems least influenced by others but I think many are influenced by yours and minipulate the questions you pose as fact.
