Travel / Backpacking/Camping in Poland [29]

If you think about it you could do it, You could be like a tour operator/guide and have deals with the horse riding/canoeing/4x4/ places.

I met a professional trekking tour guide for the Tatra there a few weeks ago.
Is this something you actually want to do? or is it more like me learning the piano? (which I don't)

Life / Religions in Poland. [64]

I was thinking of forming my own religion/philosophy/suedo science once.
I got as far as "sometimes clouds don't look like animals and that is alright"

Buddism was not supposed to be a religion but a philosophy for living.

Real Estate / Current state of the property market in Krakow [135]

high end developments is that they are unaffordable for most Poles and in fact 95% of the population

Is there a country or has there ever been a country where high end developments were affordable to 95% of the population or even 50%?
Were there high end developments during communism? I don't know.
High end developments are for a small minority.

, house prices will reflect their true value and I wont have to listen to every muppet at a party discussing how their house in Marbella is worth :D

I really and truly hope so.
Some people thought they were millionaires, a good reality check was in order for a long time, it kept going up and up and up. Unfortunately it lasted this long.

I have lived out of the country for years and have only heard things from my visits.

But Poland is not like Ireland in many respects, it is not a crazy circus here. Actually I think for a good financial climate over here, a slowing down in the market is what Poland needs.

Polish economic growth is not dependent on winning outsourcing contracts from the US

It would be a tremendous help.

As for migrant workers, until they can earn the equivalent here as they can earn there, they won't be coming home (for the majority).

Yes there will be more unemployment in Ireland and Britain.
But there is a myth that the Irish or British will "look after their own" and sack the foreigners first. (from my own experience)

It is economics not patriotism.
Would you not agree?

News / Walesa excluded from Polish national gala [38]

Walesa excluded from Polish national gala
It is strange, I think there is a much more favourable view of Walesa out side of Poland but it is still strange.
He will always be linked to the Solidarity movement and freedom.

Real Estate / Current state of the property market in Krakow [135]

It will become more difficult for Polish people to get mortgages, it will no longer be possible to get 100 or 110% for people who can not afford it.

I am happy about this because it just means people will not get too much of a mortgage.
Poland has come a long way in the last 6 years (since I first arrived).
Poland will be effected by the current world problems but not much.

As they were in Ireland and in most countries pre bubble burst

Ireland's property market is a joke, you know yourself.
People who could not afford it getting second mortgages etc etc, you probably know more than me.
Poland is not going to go the same way as Ireland.

Life / A trip to a Polish supermarket [136]

Rosetta Stone

Is that good?

I almost bought vaginal cream the other day because it was in a hand wash dispenser. Until my friend pointed it out in the shop

I still sometimes buy stuff by guessing what it is.
It makes life interesting ha ha ha.

cut me some slack

No :)
just kidding,
How are you getting on here?

I was still dealing with this sort of thing as little as two or three years ago.

The shop is now out of business.

I know there are things similar here but Lithuania had a worse time under soviet rule than Poland did during communism.

I think I am going off topic a bit
Ah well...

Life / A trip to a Polish supermarket [136]

I lived there for 2 very long years.
It is seriously different, I still work there.
I have a million horrific stories from there.
I do see tourists having a good time during the summer, if the police don't rob them.
I had a gun pulled on me for a smoke, dead bodies dumped on the land I was working on, police bribes, it is a different world.

And as for communism, Lithuania has a long way to go to even catch up with Poland.

Life / A trip to a Polish supermarket [136]

That is exactly what it is from

It is still light years a head of Lithuania, seriously.
In the main commercial street (Pilies) in the capital (Vilnius) there is only one small convenience shop (10 metres square) with three cash registers, but you can ONLY buy bread from one, ONLY drinks from the other and ONLY cheese and milk from the other.

There are too many things like this in Lithuania.
Poland was never part of the U.S.S.R and had a much easier time because of it.

It was a great relief for me to move back here to Poland :) but I still like an old rant ever now and again.

Life / A trip to a Polish supermarket [136]

In my local supermarket there are more staff than customers.

There's one woman to give you vegetables, another for bread (all she does is hand it to you), another for chocolate, another for cheese, about five for meats, about 5 packing shelves and one on the cashier.

They all look very busy, most of the time too busy for the customer.

Must be a hangover from communism, I don't know how they can survive.

And as for paying with a card because you can't speak Polish, numbers are universal.

Life / TP - Telekomunikacja Polska SA (phone/Internet company in Poland) [19]

I applied for a landline over a year ago, I do not really need it but I knew it would take forever.

Now the post man drops 50 Zlotys a month for compensation payment to me from the telephone company.

After one year it is the law they must compensate you.

I am glad I do not need the landline, just lucky I guess.

Life / Do we have TV in Poland? [38]

Hi Michal2,
Just to recap.

But as for Ireland being a tiny Island in the Atlantic, I am also surprised how much people know about it.

Actually, that is not really true. If you look at a map of Ireland and compare it to England, you will not find a great deal of difference in actual size. To call Ireland a small island in the middle of the Atlantic is quite false.

No it is not, look at Russia and get back to me :)

Is Russia joined on to Ireland then?

There is an incoherent question, there at the end.
Perhaps you ought to clarify what you mean, so we can further this discussion?

Ireland is a small country, like it or lump it.
I personally and firmly believe we have gone for quality above quantity ;p

Life / Who drinks more: Poles or Russians? [50]

Ok, to further this discussion we need to focus on the question.

Who drinks more?

1)Per year per capita?

2)per sit in a group?

3) who is drunk now?

3)Binge drinkers and moderate drinkers (but perhaps more frequent)?

If you think a category needs to be added you can **** right off :)

Life / Who drinks more: Poles or Russians? [50]

In normal houses people don't drink/wine beer after work or as addition to dinner

"normal" is relative. hiCCup!

I think it is because Luxembourg is on top that I can't believe it.

In Ireland there is a pub culture, if you have not been it is difficult to explain.

We can end this now,
Who's drunk ?
