News / I support creation of Great Poland [134]

Now you are just being silly...its quite clear you have no balls. ;) But if you did we all know you would have them nestled in Crow's mouth most of the day.

This is a good line. I especially like the use of the word 'nestled' with the word 'crow'. Almost poetic.

Was this statements from Poles about Brits emigrating to Poland? If so, what was said?

Real Estate / Current state of the property market in Krakow [135]

There's no country in the world where the smartest city centre apartments are anywhere near affordable for the average citizen. Poland is no exception.

Do you think that the Krakow city centre flats will keep their value? This was my reason for purchasing a small crappy one in preferance to a bigger, newer out of town one. It has been the case in London in past property crashes.

Or its because you're white and therefore the media doesnt feel the need to celebrate your 'vibrancy' and tell everyone what a great contribution you're making. Its not as cool to say 'hey, some of my best friends are Polish and I luuurvve their food and music!'

My workmates buy various tabloids except of Daily Mail (Scottish versions) and sometimes I browse through them trying to find something anti- pro- or just about Polish people and things but I can hardly ever spot anything. Apparently Scots don't have issues with Poles.

The surprising thing is that there is so little about Poles in Britain in the media. A couple of documentaries and a few articles about builders, not much more. Surpising when you consider the numbers. In the past other immigrants have had their own season of films and documentaries on channel 4 to 'celebrate' their arrival though normally this happens after a significant amount of time has passed.

I cant say I'm looking forward to a season of Polish films though. Or music.

The latest needle in his ribs was a story in a red top tabloid with the headline
"Polish Eat Swans".

Wasnt that a couple of years ago?

I'm not a fan of the red top tabloids but the truth is that they are quite pro-Polish. The Sun brought out a Polish version of there paper a few times, it even had a Polish page3 girl.:)

The Daily Mail on the other hand hates everyone. It really is nothing personal. At the moment they're probably writing articles slagging off bankers.

History / Poland war propaganda poster - can anyone explain this picture? [292]

Wanna compare?
Boy if you wouldn't had meddled with Iraq or the ME in your high time we
wouldn't even have today's wars there...Brits better shut up! The biggest
warmongers, invaders and exploiters of all people over centuries!

We were the innovators, you boys were just imitators.

Britain never needed a propaganda ministry either. You dont need one when you know you're right.

History / Poland war propaganda poster - can anyone explain this picture? [292]

And what about the year long occupation?

I suspect the propaganda ministry had bigger fish to fry. Poland was done and dusted pretty quickly.

Or more importantly the build up to the war (you know..to get the people in the right mood).

Since when have the Germans needed to get in the mood for a bit of invading?

Travel / New Year's in Krakow [22]

I've always wanted to do Zakopane for NY but we've all booked our hotels and stuff now so its too late for this year. The date is getting closer and my freinds are depending on me to choose somewhere good in Krakow. Tickets will probably be going on sale soon and I dont want to miss out on something good.

I can recommend a great Italian restaurant on Grodzka, 1 min from the main square - the waiters are pretty fit so that sould be nice for the wife :))))

Tempting as that sounds, I think I'll pass. Very considerate of you though.

Life / Talk-sex in Poland...are Poles really prude? [44]

People who want to talk about sex I think are trying to make it 'clean' and nothing to be ashamed of when it should be dirty and shameful. Thats why Catholics are such sex-fiends, they enjoy it more.

UK, Ireland / Poles in the UK Turn Out to be Star Waiters and Waitresses. [13]

Okay I have no anti polish feelings (I think everyone on the forum knows that), but I find this incredible - service is done in a miserable and unwilling manner in Poland and to be quite honest I have not experienced any great hospitality (when out in a bar or restaurant) from a Pole in the UK.

I was in Berlin at the weekend and found the people friendlier (as long as you break the ice with them as they will never do it with you) and service much better than in Poland. I didnt want it to be so, but it was. Maybe the high level of English spoken by Germans is a factor.

Travel / Krakow going down the toilet! [184]

Boy what 4 years does! That area is now real nice with the Galeria coming in.

That area has changed the most. I remember it being a bit dodgy and the only thing I could get to eat round there was a sausage cooked over a burning oil drum.

Travel / Krakow going down the toilet! [184]

Prague before 2001.Dark,rotten buildings, old monuments full of smoke.
Prague now.Lights,renovated buildings,monuments sparkling.
Prague before:No cafes,very few restaurants,mostly pubs.
Prague now.Vibrant,full of cafes,excellent restaurants.
The same in Krakow.

Let's face it.These tourists, primitive or not bring in the money. However the old atmosphere and the girls...what a disaster.

A good point that people would rather ignore i think. I remember about 4 years ago walking around Krakow and thinking this place 'could' look great with a bit of tlc. Market sq has always looked good but the rest wasnt well maintained at all. The area around the railway station was grim.

Travel / My trip to Poland - I hated Katowice, loved Krakow, and adored Bielsko [59]

I think Cov is twinned with Warsaw. The only thing they have in common though is that they were both flatten by the Gerrys. In the post war reconstruction Warsaw went for a recreation of their pre war buildings whereas Cov went for the new concrete monstrosities. I reckon Warsaw got the better deal. :)

Spaghetti Junction anyone?

You're making my point for me really.

are you sure? There is a reason for the phrase 'being sent to Coventry'.

It relates to the English Civil war.

Personally I think since the regeneration of Brindley Place and the town centre B'ham is a far nicer place than Cov.

Cov has also been 'regenerated'. This word however is just a euphemism for 'we've built a load of overpriced city centre flats that are now in negative equity, and opened a few bars and a Starbucks'.

Mind you if you like the nightlife in Broad St. other than for a stag or hen night then you obviously have questionable taste anyway.

I was trying to give an example of something remotely positive about Brum. It was either this or spaff about how its 'the home of the Balti'.

Sorry this is nothing to do with Poland, but I feel the urge to defend my homeland.

Blind loyalty is never good.

i live in Coventry as well, and your mad if you think you can compare it to Birmingham.

They're both dumps, thats the comparison I was making. Both concrete jungles and both cities in the west midlands with zero architectural interest.

the locals are crazy and if im honest, just plain dangerous.

I wont deny this. The place has always had a bad reputation throughout the midlands. Something I didnt realise till I left.

I am NOT going to sit here and bicker about which city is better, I dont need to.

No offence intended its just comparing Brum to Krakow is quite an original opinion and requires a bit of explaining.

Birmingham was England's Capital of Culture, its a beautiful city...

So is Liverpool. I rest my case.

Lets please not turn this thread into an argument about which city is better... I was raised near Birmingham so to me it has the feeling of home to help its cause, im sure its the same with you and Krakow...

I'm from Coventry which is concrete city yet Brum makes Cov look like Venice. The only similarity I can see between Krakow and Brum is that neither speak English in an intelligible way. Although Brum does have the best nightlife in Britain (Broad Street on a Saturday night is excellent).

UK, Ireland / Integrating Polish people into the British society [150]

a) we are lowering the wages.
this is good point but on the other hand we tak jobs nobody else wants to do - farming, waiting, etc.

...and building work primarily. Its overstating it to say that no one wants to do these jobs as I'm sure the majority of farmers, waiters and builders are not Polish. And for those that work in these areas salaries will inevitably drop as labour supply increases so dramatically. Its no skin off my nose though as British and Irish builders used to take the p1ss if you hired them. Total kunts some of them.

Life / Are the Polish the most proudest people you have encountered? [51]

I think what Bubba had in mind is that often we think to highly about ourselves.

Most Poles I've met have quite a low opinion of their country and will criticise it heavily, though will defend it to foreigners.

It seems that those people you mention here say those things out loud to convince themselves that it is the truth, while deep down they have some doubts.

Exactly. Poles recognise they need top boost their self esteem as it does seem to be genuinely low. Maybe sometimes they overshoot the mark somewhat. :)

Britain is quite a crowded, urban island so maybe foreigners arent as exotic to us as they would be to other nations that have a low level of immigration. The positive flipside to this is that we are less demanding of any foreigners that come here and will generally give them space to breathe and get on with things.
