History / Western Europe and America vs Russia WWII - chances of Poland being saved [494]

What should "Walh" mean? The first time the germanic tribes had come in contact with "Italy" was with Rome as far as I know.

I am not linguistic expert but as can read in quoted by me source at the begining all Celts were called in this way... by Germans. Poles borrowed this word and only Italians are called in this way.

Germanic tribes called Northern Italians "Walh". According to Brückner Poles changed a little bit this name and here are "Włochy".

he was convinced that Russia shouldn't have ever helped any of other Slavic countries

He claimed that Russian should conquer them instead.

According to census of 1989 the USSR had about 3 mln of Germans

Most of them in current Kazachstan where they have been deported...

Well Russians have long tradtion of freindship with Germans.

Partitions of Poland. Invasion on Poland together with Hitler in 1939 ... I doubt that it will soon change. There is long tradition of this friendship.

History / Poland remembers its bloodless revolution of 1989 [9]

According to survey ... only 9 % of Polish people have good opinion about " old times". Mostly older one who couldn't find themsleves in new system. Or simple their social status (in compariosn to neighbours) became lower.

If we look on fact that 25% of Eastern Germans want "the wall" to be rebuild.

Poles are in much better mental condition. :-)

What is more most people think that after last 20 years. Poles are better edcuated, richer, hardworking and even more handsome ...

The Volga Germans (those who resettled to Russia at the times of Ekaterina) have deserved reputation of kind, honest and neat people.

Many died defending their new homeland

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volga_Germans

When Hitler invaded the Soviet Union, Stalin was worried that the Volga Germans might collaborate with them. On August 28, 1941, he dissolved the Volga-German ASSR and ordered the immediate relocation of ethnic Germans, both from the Volga and from a number of other traditional areas of settlement. These were stripped of their land and houses, and moved eastwards to Kazakhstan in Soviet Central Asia, Altai Krai in Siberia, and other remote areas.

From G20 to G2 as China tunes in to economic debate

theaustralian.news.com.au/business/story/0,28124,25293172-5013584,00.html

Well ... most world press called G-20 meeting ... G2 meeting of USA and China ... it is the reality.

Germany is regional power without potnential of being more important on worlds map. As Joshka noticed EU is being weak and nobody cares about euros opinion.

News / Polish Japanese relations (history and present time) [90]

Expanding a strategic partnership
worldeyereports.com/reports/2009/2009_poland/2009_poland.aspx

Celebrating the 90th anniversary of formal relations this year, Poland and Japan have highlighted a long and very deep history that dates back since the end of World War I, and have mapped out strategies to expand ties beyond diplomacy.

he overall strategy was...what exactly???

Well I could ask you the same question.

Our army did the best and even overperformed often enough

I'd say that Poles overperformed ...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_contribution_to_World_War_II

For sure not Germans ... as long as they were fighting against alone small Poland ... France (blizkreig was succesful) ... or alone Great Britan (lost battle of Britain) ... they had successes but later ...

not had as she was overstretched, undermanned and without free, unlimited access to important, vital resources!

Germans and their resonable leadership ...

Now lets go back to reality and how majority of German soldiers looked like:

lonesentry.com/articles/germanhorse/index.html

But the notion of the mechanized might of the German Wehrmacht was largely a glamorized myth born in the fertile brains of newspapermen.

Today, 60 years later, it's called "stealth" bomber! :)

Interesting

And why the hell should Kalashnikov admit now that he got "help"...nobody had forced him to. He would have surely said now if he was influenced by the US or someone else too.

Story of Schmesser seems to be similar to Ciołkowski father who was deported to Russia for particpating in anti-Russian Polish up-rises.

As to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Konstantin_Tsiolkovsky

Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovsky (Russian: Константи́н Эдуа́рдович Циолко́вский; Polish: Konstanty Ciołkowski) (September 17 [O.S. September 5] 1857-September 19, 1935) was an Imperial Russian and Soviet rocket scientist and pioneer of the astronautic theory. He is considered by many to be the father of theoretical astronautics. His works later inspired leading Soviet rocket engineers such as Sergey Korolyov and Valentin Glushko and contributed to the early success of the Soviet space program.

Tsiolkovsky theorized many aspects of space travel and rocket propulsion. He is considered the father of human spaceflight and the first man to conceive the space elevator, becoming inspired in 1895 by the newly-constructed Eiffel Tower in Paris.

His father was a Polish patriot deported to Russia as a result of his revolutionary political activities

Mine too! :)

But due to the heavy weight and ...

That is why I don't like German wunderwaffes from last period of the war ... they looked good on pictures but they weren't practical.... and their cost was very high.

Unlike :

Most German Panthers durring battle of Kursk didn't fight because the earlies versions of this tanks had many defects and most of them was broken in way from railwaystation to the front line.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panther_tank

The Panther first saw action at Kursk on 5 July 1943. Early tanks were plagued with mechanical problems: the track and suspension often broke, and the engine was dangerously prone to overheating and bursting into flames. At Kursk, more Panthers were disabled by their own failings than by enemy action.

I wouldn't call them superiour to anny tank in 1943 ... when better versions were devolped ... others made progress with their weapons.

Was the T34 as good as the King Tiger?

I just love such comparisions...

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiger_II

Designed 1943

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-34

Lets compare Tiger to IS 2

pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/IS-2_(czołg_ciężki)

designed in 1943

As to German weapons:

military-quotes.com/forum/hits-polish-defense-industry-t51365.html

Half a century of achievements of Polish radiolocation industry and talents of the designers from Warsaw's "Przemysłowy Instytut Telekomunikacji" (PIT) (Industrial Telecommunication Institute) decided that NATO has chosen PIT's radars N12 M for tracking the eastern borders of the Alliance. Mounted on towers - three long distance radars have been integrated with the entire NATO system of its airspace control. The experts say that a true hit is a sophisticated data processing. Our programmers have shown their class here. The radars let the NATO commanders see exactly what happens in the airspace, several hundreds kilometers away from the radiolocation posts.

Did you know that the famous AK-47 was german designed (Schmeisser):

Well it is still controversial ... but you might be right.

Anny way we have also "Polish Russians" section on this forum ...

BTW Poland has radars which detect American planes build in Stealth technology ...

Stealth technology also known as LO technology (low observable technology) is a sub-discipline of military electronic countermeasures which covers a range of techniques used with aircraft, ships, submarines, and missiles, in order to make them less visible (ideally invisible) to radar, infrared, sonar and other detection methods.

Only because we are allies ... Poland doesn't use it on NATO exercises

he was German but because Germans were the first to take professional military training seriously

... some German units were strong and proffesionaly trained... Most weren't ...

"obedient" as in following their orders....well loyalty and discipline were maintained high till the last days, that's right!

Do you know how many guns were sold by German "disciplined" soldiers for Polish underground...

another weapon : en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PPSh-41

he PPSh-41 (Pistolet-Pulemyot Shpagina; Russian: Пистолет-пулемёт Шпагина; Shpagin Machine Pistol; nicknamed Pah-Pah-sha, Shpagin and Burp Gun) submachine gun was one of the most mass produced weapons of its type of World War II. It was designed by Georgi Shpagin as an inexpensive alternative to the PPD-4

The captured PPSh was in particular a favorite weapon of the Germans.Because of the similarities between the 7.62x25mm Tokarev and the 7.63x25mm Mauser cartridge used in the Mauser C96 pistol, the PPsh was easily supplied with ammunition. In fact so many were captured that it became the second-most-common submachinegun used by German forces.
