Thats impossible. How exactly did the US get supplies to Russia?

A total of $50.1 billion (equivalent to nearly $700 billion at 2007 prices) worth of supplies were shipped: $31.4 billion to Britain, $11.3 billion to the Soviet Union, $3.2 billion to France and $1.6 billion to China. The USSR was highly dependent on trains, yet the desperate need to produce weapons meant that only about 92 locomotives were produced in the USSR during the entire war. In this context, the supply of 1,981 US locomotives can be better understood. Likewise, the Soviet air force was almost completely dependent on US supplies of very high octane aviation fuel. Although most Red Army tank units were equipped with Soviet-built tanks, their logistical support was provided by hundreds of thousands of high-quality US-made trucks. Indeed by 1945 nearly two-thirds of the truck strength of the Red Army was US-built. Trucks such as the Dodge ¾ ton and Studebaker 2.5 ton, were easily the best trucks available in their class on either side on the Eastern Front. US supplies of telephone cable, aluminium, and canned rations were also critical.

The list below is the amount of war material shipped to the Soviet Union through the US Lend-Lease program from its beginning until 30 September 1945.

Aircraft 14,795
Tanks 7,056
Jeeps 51,503
Trucks 375,883
Motorcycles 35,170
Tractors 8,071
Guns 8,218
Machine guns 131,633
Explosives 345,735 tons
Building equipment valued $10,910,000
Railroad freight cars 11,155
Locomotives 1,981
Cargo ships 90
Submarine hunters 105
Torpedo boats 197
Ship engines 7,784
Food supplies 4,478,000 tons
Machines and equipment $1,078,965,000
Non-ferrous metals 802,000 tons
Petroleum products 2,670,000 tons
Chemicals 842,000 tons
Cotton 106,893,000 tons
Leather 49,860 tons
Tires 3,786,000
Army boots 15,417,001 pairs

The question is, would there still be a will after Britain’s defeat?

If Britain had been defeated, the US would have gone round the back door, joined the Russians making a combined thrust from the East - and of course the soft under belly (Italy) having first defeated Rommel in North Africa

peoples like Neanderthal and Cro-magnon crossed the Atlantic when the whole North of it was frozen.

...don't forget the Island of Atlantis which was located mid Atlantic. When it sank due to volcanic activity - the people split - some to Northern Africa and some to Southern America. In both places they built pyramids and introduced new technologies:)

I would like to add that america did not belong to the indians

...the Indian Americans originated from Asia. They walked over when ice still linked Alaska and Russia. This was proven by examining the teeth samples from buried skulls on both sides. Where did you learn history?

"The spanish stole it then the europeans stole it? That makes NO SENSE. Retarded statement.

...all you have to do is think about it for a while...

You are correct and you are from the UK a prime example of a group of people who will "learn" when its to late

...ok - lets try again. 75% of my friends are from ethnic minorities. Being with them is
an inspiration. 2 of them are Mexican. They are humans. They are funny, challenging
and they open my mind. I can't imagine living with only English people. How boring. In the future, we will all learn to live together. Get it? There will be more wars etc before that happens unfortunatley.

"schultzy?"

I am not sure who that is.

It's you - dummy

They are simply overpopulating land that was theirs to begin with

It belonged to the Indians. The Spanish stole it from them - and then the Europeans
stole it from them.

Saying mexicans are no good for USA is saying poles are no good for ireland.

The Mexicans and the Poles are both wonderful, good people - that's why they get along so well. But remember - too much of a good thing is bad for you. Sure - let them in like FISZ says, but you say in large numbers. Every country has an economical balance. You risk tipping that balance. It's just common sense. On the social side - humans need time to learn how to live in harmony with other cultures...people like yourself:)...

so best to keep it steady.

Nationalism is actually on the uprise in europe

...some people just never learn...

at least I can walk down my nearest major city at night without worries

..which city would that be...schultzy?

I bet that isin't even how you spell your name

...the same name is spelt differently in different countries...

mexicans are great hard workers and should be accepted in large numbers to the USA

...you never studied economics did you...

News / Dealing with constant insults against Polish [323]

Many Nazi children died fighting the allies. German Boys and girls, both fought and died.

that's right - the 'Nazi Youth' - one of em's the Pope now.

It's a shame the Polish fighting kids never made contact with the
German fighting kids because they probably would have ended up
playing - and growing up mates in the future. They don't discriminate
over race or culture :)

So would you rather be a Frenchman who gave up the capital of their country in 6 weeks?

The first man to commit suicide from the Warsaw Stalin Tower was French - he thought it a more honorable place to die than the Eiffel Tower

this went off topic pretty fast lol

sorry was just following the flow

why did he engage the "battle of britain" then?

like a big kid - he wanted to bomb Britain for declaring war on him. He was p***** because they were against his big plan. Very vendictive bloke he was. He actually respected UK - why do you think he stopped the German advance just outside Dunkirk and let the English army escape? Hitler wanted partnership with UK.

i dont think we do...

some expats in Spain that dont make the effort to learn the language

The majority speak English.

i wonder what would you think if everyone in the Uk started to speak his own language??

My friend owns a shop in London and foreign people always ask in broken English. They never order in their own language and assume he knows their language - because that would be arrogant. If they don't speak English they point and gesture. Yes Lots of people in the world speak English but that's no excuse to impose the English language in other countries.

You have to remember that the US had already
bailed Europe out in WWI. Germany gave up when the US
started fighting. They owed Europe nothing really. Just think
what the people of the US thought when Europe was at it again
only 20 years later. **** em! The US military was itchin to kick
German ass again. Pearl Harbor justified US involvement and the
US bailed Europe out again.

The UK should be worshiping the English Channel instead of
saying, - yeah, we held off Hitler. If it wasn't for the channel
England would have held for 3 weeks - if that.

Hitler never intended to cross the channel (hurt/punish Britain - Yes) but
not cross the channel. The hype was a smoke screen to hide plans
to invade Russia. If he was serious - then there would have been plans to
disable the navy ships first.

The size of Russia , bad weather and numbers of Russian soldiers defeated the Nazis.
They don't teach this in school but Russia invaded Poland in 1920 and got their ass kicked by the Poles. If it wasn't for the US and allied pressure from west, Germany would have held the Russians. The allies weakened the Germans psychologically and similarly encouraged the Russians.

News / Are the Polish embarrased by President Kaczynski? [30]

IT'S TOO EARLY TO TELL!!!!

For a country that didn't exist for 120 years - then shafted -
then granted short-lived freedom - then completely destroyed
and then shafted - and then taken over for 40 years by communists...
they are probably not doing too badly. It will be another 30 years
before we can compare Poland politically with the rest. It takes time -
experimentation - failures - and then successes. Poland is now
going through rehab. Rehab is never pretty.

Is there any possibility for Off-Piste. How about Skidoo driven off piste skiing

You need to contact one of the locals who can set you up with just about anything for the right price - and it's probably legal. I had a few contacts but am no longer in touch. You have to ask around when you get there.

What is Zakopane like?

Zakopane is a one off. At peak season it will give you a bit of everything. No - it's not the Alps. If you are a ski freak then go to the Alps. If you want to ski until 8pm, party until 5am and meet gorgeous women - go to Zakopane. The highest slope is 2000m (above clouds) giving you cable car access and 2 black runs. The majority of the slopes are 1200m red/blue slopes great for beginners/intermediate. Loads of beginner slopes. Nosal is a challenging black/red run. Zakopane is a lively town with loads of shops, restaurants and clubs. Every bar tells a different story - has different characters. Most days are packed with people. Nights are busy at weekends and hit/miss weekday depending on who's in town. Ski slopes are scattered over a 4 mile radius so having a hired car will help you get around - but minibuses also take people around.

I know people who have done the Alps - but somewhow they always
find themselves back in Zakopane.

Travel / Australian guy in Poland for 1st time [6]

Fly in to Warsaw (Hotel Mazowiecka) on Mazowiecka street - it's cheap and posh. Go out to old town, nowy swiat, clubbing at night. If you are young, male and single - you'll love it. Mazowiecka street has Paparazzi (bar) and Enklava (club). Yes Warsaw looks battered but it's adictive. Train to Gdansk (3 hours). You'll love the trains, old fashioned compartments with 6-8 people - always meet interesting people - nice ladies (journey 3 hours - lots of time to talk). In Gdansk shop and party again. Then train to Sopot - little beach town, nice with lots of bars and clubs. Train to Posnan (shop - party) Train to Wroclaw (shop - Party!) Train to Krakow - get some culture - then shop and party (Prozak club) When you sober up, catch bus to mountains (2 hours) Zakopane and skiing (Dec - March) Zakopane has loads of shops and you guessed it - bars and clubs. Train back to Krakow and fly home. I guarantee you'll be back for more. Total price approx $600 US 10 days (2 days skiing).

History / Poland has paid £68 Million for helping UK in WW2 [168]

I think you have been reading too many american war magazines and comic books.

Not really - it's just true. Of course other countires contributed to victory but the US tipped the balance both times. Nothing wrong with that - good to work in a team!!

History / Poland has paid £68 Million for helping UK in WW2 [168]

France, the UK and Russia fought to protect themselves only in WW1 - to protect themselves against the agresive Germany. Germany only gave up because the USA came into the war. Poland, France, UK and Russia should be grateful to the USA, both in WW1 and WW2. Also lets not forget, if it wasn't for Poland, you'd all have first been speaking Mongolian(13th C), then Turkish(17th C), then Russian (1920) Ultimately, along with many international soldiers, we thank the US for our freedom.

It is this level of fundamental ignorance that is shown whenever a Pole glosses over the enormous Western bloodshed, which as an absolutely necessary part of Poland getting independence, and concentrates solely and exclusively on the tragedy of WW2.

Poland is very aware of what France and allies did for it through the ages - just look at some of the monuments around the city. There's Charles de Gaulle square with a statue

of De Gaulle for his help during the 1920 war with Russia and tributes to allied help during the war. Napoleon square which was changed to Uprisers square after the war. Poland knows what the others have done, but concentrates solely and exclusively on the tragedy of WW2 becuase of what they failed to do in 1939. France had the largest army in Europe in 1939 - it had a year to mobilize in 1939. Poland was actually not doing to badly holding off the Germans but the support never came - and time food and bullets ran out.

Life / is it easy to live in Poland? [58]

I was born and raised in the UK - I have a good job - plenty money - but when I'm in Poland I feel alive. I'm sure it's the same with other recently freed eastern european countries - there is an energy, a feeling that anything could happen. Yes it's poor, sometimes bleak, but people somehow get by and they seem inspired. It's difficult to describe - this energy that exists, especially in larger cities - the charm and quirky character of the countryside. I have met English, Irish and Scottish people in Poland who are living there. They earn less, much less, but they survive, shop in markets, eat real food and are happy. They recognise a better quality of life. Not richer - but better quality of life. (to be defined?) Younger poles however recognise the hardships in their country and are tempted by the west, because they can earn more money. It's a practical thing. They come to the UK - they see, experience, ponder - but find their hearts remain in Poland. One day they will realise that money aint everything, and return and join those English Irish and those Scotts.

Benjamin Spychaj - show your friends this
Poland probably had one of the best cavalry in the world at
that time

The Battle of Krasnobród took place on 23 September 1939 near the town of Krasnobród. It was fought between the forces of the Polish Army and the German Wehrmacht during the Polish Defensive War of 1939. It was one of the last battles in European warfare in which cavalry was used on both sides.
