Law / Paying duties for e-bay purchases. [3]

Some of the do-gooders around here will call me a criminal or whatever but I don't care. Have any of you guys ever tried getting around the import duty for things shipped from abroad? I just got an xbox 360, the sender will try to send it as a gift so as to avoid duties, but I'm pretty sure that won't work. Any experiences?

Work / Any english teachers in Poland here with tips to share? [55]

One thing I've noticed since I've been here is how easy it is to seem arrogant, especially as the people are touchy. I often feel arrogant when I walk into a place and try to get by with english, this is Poland after all. Even as a teacher standing in front of my students running my mouth in english I feel like they must think I'm a fraud - or like they're thinking "why don't you try learning our language wise-ass.."

I blame it all on our president. We've had such an arrogant administration - people can't help but equate american with arrogance. Everytime I walk in a room abroad I feel like I should introduce myself thusly: "hey I'm Jon, I apologise for the past 8 years of American arrogance, it will be over soon - we promise."

Yeah I can imagine that some of these teachers can be arrogant. I mostly teach private lessons or business lessons and those are really pleasant. Yet But I've heard stories about teachers in Universities etc, especially from ten years back, seems like both sides have had to deal with a lot of crap.

Work / Any english teachers in Poland here with tips to share? [55]

You know its perfectly fine to complain about certain aspect's of one's stay in Poland. Mr. Bubbles may not like the work here, but there are thousands of other good things that might keep him where he is. I happen to enjoy teaching here in Warsaw, but if I didn't, I would still stay for my girlfriend and the change of lifestyle living here provides, as opposed to New York.

Love / BLACK GUYS POLISH WOMEN [809]

Leyla where are you from? It's interesting to hear your perspective. I experience some resentment from white guys here in Poland because I'm dating "their" woman - but that's a known issue here. I never really heard issues with interacial dating between a girl and a white man. I think I always assumed that girls would be kinder and more enlightened. Sorry to hear about your trouble, it's not all bad though, most people are fine with it, and I've comme to realize that even those who appeared shocked at the sight of an interracial couple got used to it and became friendly.

Love / BLACK GUYS POLISH WOMEN [809]

this is you in one of your post . "i got a beautiful polish women"

Nice try but you're getting confused by the semantics, trivial details. This guy's meaning when he says "our women" is that all white women belong to him and other whites. That's sexist. But when I say "I got a beautiful Polish woman" that just means "I'm with a beutiful Polish woman" whether I use 'got' or 'with' is trivial.

You understand now?

lat week was the gay week in polish forum and this one look like is the black week .
can you please stop to speak about black or white?

I wanted to address what this guy said and make fun of him a bit, that's understandable.

News / Iron curtain between Church & State for Poland? [4]

Separation of Church and State for Poland.

As a New Yorker born and raised, let's just say that I have very liberal views about religion. And as a former civil rights activist, one of my primary concerns was to uphold the doctrine of church and state, a central principle of American governance.

Times change however, and these days I live in Poland, where I divide my time between the bustle of Warsaw, and the tranquility of Zamosc, where I break bread with my girlfriend's lovely parents on week-ends, partake in household activites, the most important being religious observance, and ultimately church attendance both of which I do out of respect for their wishes.

Despite this compromise, my personal views on religion remain unchanged, but I must admit to an acquired respect and deepened insight into the catholic culture here in Poland, how important it is to the nation's devout, and how unrealistic and undesirable it would be to strengthen the separation of church and state in this country, to the point of erasing all catholic symbols from public life. This has apparently been vigourously touted by SLD leader Grzegorz Napieralsk, and is one I would have never imagined myself opposing.

But whatever the personal beliefs one might have, it is ultimately to common-sense that one must subscribe. My brand of common-sense has led me to support the preservation of Poland's catholic heritage. Roman catholicism is an important feature of Polish history and culture, it is one of the things that defines Poland to a visitor such as I, eager to seek out any remains of a true Polish identity in between the modern big city buildings of Warsaw, and the widespread, capitalist commercialization making strides across Poland, be it in the capital, or down south where Zamosc stands. You can count this phenomenon among the known discontents of globalisation: it is making the world smaller, erasing all 'old-fashion' cultures (ones incompatible with the modern pursuit of materialism,) thus robbing disparate cultures of their individual identities.

Yet even as it continues its growth as a new capitalist power, Poland can still boast some important aspects of its national identity. The first and most striking has to be its homogeneity. Although Poland has been historically multi-cultural, various factors, good and bad, have made it a homogeneous nation where ethnic Poles abound. The scarcity of minority groups is unbelievable to someone used to cities like New York, Geneva, Paris, etc. While it cam be eerie at times, it is nevertheless a refreshing sight – something unique among developed capitalist powers.

Then of course, there is Roman Catholicism. It is often noted that its hold on Poles is eroding, yet the statistics record unpredictable drops and surges. The fact remains that 80% of the population is religious, and 95% of religious Poles are Roman Catholic. Atheists come in at a measly 2%.

While Poland officially protects all religious groups from persecution, the fact remains that religious minorities are too few to require a renewed attack on the dominant religion. Poland is overwhelmingly Catholic, its faith unified the people when the communists forced atheism, and that faith eventually saw them through this dark period. Admirably, Poles didn't take their disgust with communist atheism as an excuse to reinstate a state church, they in fact effected a legal separation of church and state that adequately provides for the freedom of religious minorities to this day. Who then, is the erasure of Roman Catholicism supposed to protect? In the United States, the strength of the doctrine was required in light of the number of minority groups. It will be quite some time in Poland's case however, before this becomes an issue.

The bigger picture points to the challenge of a nation's cultural identity. While an ambitious and forward looking class seeks to modernize Poland until it becomes just another major capitalist democracy, which cultural symbols will manage to be retained?

WAIT!

What about social issues like abortion?

Oh yeah...just duke it out and see who wins...

Travel / anyone put the new shengen rules to the test? [30]

But hes hardly a mexican, im sure he has more to offer Poland than immigrants under normal immgrant circumstances.

Is that for me taking your side against that inane dense b*tch yesterday?

WB, the guy moans all the time about Poland and now moans that he cant stay longer because of laws in Europe....Amercians hate the fact that Mexicans pour into their country illegally yet he thinks it okay to do the same in Europe!

I don't moan about Poland all the time, I talk about the good, complain about the bad, I did it in New York too. And just now I wasn't talking about staying longer in Poland at all, I was talking about LEAVING Poland and if I would be able to come back in Europe anywhere. My mom's in Sweden, I got childhood friends in Switzerland, so this is of interest to me.

I don't hate the fact that Mexicans pour into my country, I don't consider mexicans a threat at all compared to dumb-asses pouring into leadership positions in our goverment (bush & friends) or terrorists.

You're on a visa, you DON'T have the right to stay any longer than you are allowed! Quit b*tching! Schengen is to make it easy for Europeans to travel, not for fcuking whiny yanks to overstay their welcome!

Well I obviously understand that about Poland you idiot, If I come to Poland I have a limit that's intuitive. But my surprise, and what's counter-intuitive is that if I leave Poland after 3 months I must wait another 3 months before I can reenter Europe, be it Switzerland or Spain. Don't act like that should just be obvious to a foreigner who isn't exposed to all these developments. It's not obvious at all, especially if I spent most of my travelling freely throughout europe. So thats why im asking for info, for people to educate me about all this mess, I wasn't asking for moronic insults.

you know, I thought this schengen agreement was restricted to a handful of countries but apparently Schengen comprises most of europe!! So If I spend 3 months in Poland , that's it? I gotta leave europe!!??? Thats f*cking ridiculous I can't believe it.

no you're right, a lot of white people who have nothiing against black people nevertheless say **** like "you don't act black" or "you're not really black" because I speak good english and I stay out of jail, well that's racist, even if they don't mean it. It's very dumb too which is worse. They equate black with violence or decadence of any shape or form.
