Love / IS IT FRIENDS OR SOMETHING ELSE [13]

IS IT FRIENDS OR SOMETHING ELSE

I'd wait and see what happens over the next month or so before I started making long term plans.
As usual on these matters I'm sceptical. But of course I hope everything works out the best for you.

Work / Job opportunities in Poland for a foreigner? (other than a teacher) [175]

i need the initial foundation for teaching

Make sure that you have: English Grammar in Use. It's the most popular grammar book. Check it out online.

Bring some test books from the UK. Even books graded for 14 yr olds will have a good level of vocabulary for 18 yr old students here in Poland.

Most people are happy to learn from photocopies, which should work out cheap for you.

Work / Im thinking about moving to Poland and need advice on teaching english [18]

sapphire,

Teaching is the bottom of the ladder and a backward step for many people. You have to find a way to use the, advanced, skills you have. Spend some time looking for international companies in the town or city you want to move to. Then tell them or their head office how you would be useful.

Make use of your partner's contacts.

The best teaching job would be within a multi-national.......teaching members of staff. Two or three hours of such work would give you an ordinary, Polish, day's pay.

Travel / What are Your Best Poland Travel Tips? [64]

You can use your ATM card/VISA/MC to withdraw PL currency

This is probably the safest way too. It means that you only carry the cash you need when you need it.

Life / Media Markt in Wroclaw - returning merchandise [8]

afc1903,

There should be a customer service point and at least one member off staff will speak English. They will want all the relevant documents and packaging that came with the item/s.

They might check the item at the counter and correct the problem, send it away to be repaired or exchange it.

Life / Why do poles drink & drive? [82]

but when they do have an accident they are more likely to die....

Not so. Most deaths on Polish roads are in fact pedestrians. 75%. That's why we have new roads around villages and new and better crossing points.

Also, I don't see how you can blame a tree at the side of the road for causing an accident.

Feedback / My Thoughts on this Forum and Moderators [71]

As I've been here longer than all the above. I'd just like to say that the forum is doing just fine.

It will soon become a prime source for people who wish to learn about Polish History, Polish Genealogy, Polish Food, Translations, Buying Property in Poland and more.

All the new people are just as friendly as those from the early days.

And If I were a moderator I'd be a lot tougher than the ones we have now. Which means that they show a sense of fairness, I can only commend them for.

History / Polish resettlement camps in Britain 1945 [82]

Polish Resettlement Camps in the UK, 1946 to 2011

I'm not even half way through it yet, but so far this site has been absolutely excellent at giving the personal side to the dry facts and figures which many of us already knew:

northwickparkpolishdpcamp.co.uk/index.htm

Highly recommended.

It does seem that the author doesn't have a lot of time for certain elements of today's Britain:

unlike today when we go to so much trouble to foster a multicultural society, speaking Polish at school was strictly forbidden and punished.

Unlike today's asylum seekers, people then were grateful just to have a bit of stability and a roof over their heads, albeit in corrugated asbestos nissen huts or "rooms" divided with blankets.

UK, Ireland / Stop the Polish from entering the UK (yet another thread) [192]

yes agree we need them in Poland.

For what ?

The universities here are producing good graduates. Give them the money and they'll stay.

Building workers: So far as I can see there is no real problem here. Buildings are shooting up all over the place.

Life / Wroclaw Tips about food, Wi-Fi, and watching sport [6]

1. Ready's. It's cheap. Shuts at about 10-10:30pm.
2. Anywhere near the centre. It's free I think. You just need your laptop set up for it.
3. Football, basketball. Or do you mean on the telly ? If so, the PF threads might have some answers.

Work / are there ANY young, American/British females in Poland? [15]

or are there really very few American/British females teaching English in Poland these days?

I would guess this to be the case.

though I'm curious if being an American female limits your interactions with local men?

I can't see why it would. Especially in a university city like Wroclaw. Of course once you meet a few people and go out in a group it will be easier.

UK, Ireland / Polish woman shot in London. [57]

Our police aren't allowed guns.

Some are. Plus, there are armed response teams in many, if not all cities in the UK. An armed police officer wouldn't have prevented the recent deaths that I have read about.

Food / Golumki (Golabki) [12]

I bake them in the oven with a 2- quart can of tomato juice

Interesting. You can do the same with a can of tomato soup or a ketchup concentrate.

Life / Begging in Poland (new scam) [9]

In the past it was just people begging. Now it is a particular group of people using a slightly different method. It seems to be working for them because I saw plenty people handing over cash. Normally people tell these folks to fcuk off.

I think that in a student city like Wroclaw, if a student type has a problem it's more believable. And therefore some people are more likely to hand over cash.
