But you still cannot generalise on an average Brit. whichever way you generalise on the issue <s>

First thing you have to do is to define what a "Brit' is......would you be able to generalise on that ? If you did , would it be meaningful or just an opinion ?

well... just as i believe that stereotypes exist i believe that we can identify common properties inherent in different nationalities - as with averages these properties are not found in equal amounts in all instances but in sufficient qantity for us to be able to identify

generalisations are arrived through the process of formulating general concepts by abstracting common properties of instances - conversely, assumptions are arrived by taking something for granted... the two are not the same

yup, but just because a person is entitled to their opinion it doesnt make them right... some opinions are unhealthy and just because someone is entitled to hold it it doesnt mean they should be encouraged or respected for doing so

what this boils down to is that people are entitled to be idiots but that doesnt mean other people shouldnt tell them they are idiots
