Love / My polish girlfriend has changed following death of dad.. [153]

my girlfriend has been in mourning for 5 weeks is thier anyone who could explain the whole process? polish women please

where I come from the official mourning time was one year after the loss of a parent. That doesn't mean pouring ashes on your hair daily, but participation, or degree of participation in some social activities was expected to be pretty low.

I don't think there are any rigid national rules though. It all varies by region, or even by individual family.

History / Identify medal from Austrian area of Poland [36]

Just click on it and save. Then enlarge it.

I did and the shape of the cross looked like Krzyz Walecznych, but it gets pixelized at higher zoom. I'm working on a 17" with 1920x1200 so things are sharp but small.

UK, Ireland / Are the Poles in England hated? [450]

So is this Fair enough or not?

Under the circumstance you described the child has the right to 1/2 of the medical care of the UK citizen, or to 100% medical care but only regarding 1/2 of her body.

Love / My polish girlfriend has changed following death of dad.. [153]

i just feel we are getting further apart and when i ask her about us she says im stressing her and pushing her.

Be gentle.
She's not thinking straight now. She's ruled by her feelings.
You have two options:

- keep pushing her and risk breaking up for good
- give her some space and have a chance (not a guarantee) to put things back on track

History / Identify medal from Austrian area of Poland [36]

that's not it, is it?.

The shape of the cross appears to be the same, but the picture is way too small to tell. Also the ribbon is a little out fo the ordinary for Krzyz Walecznych.

I'd be grateful if anyone could identify this medal:

too small, it could be one of these:

Krzyz Walecznych

Order Krzyza Grunwaldu 1st or 2nd class (imo more likely than Krzyz Walcznych)

USA, Canada / New York trip suggestions [56]

That was bofore Juliani took over the city and "cleaned it up" a bit.

He really made some changes.

A couple years ago I went for a week to NYC and we couldn't believe some of what we saw. We drove in via G. Washington bridge, moving south towards midtown. At around 130th street we saw a white woman walking a dog!!! And the dog wasn't even a rottweiler but some while little fluffy white thing on 4 paws. That was something unthinkable in late 80's. Sights like that around that area, or anywhere above 97th street, would have made all the way to headline news back then :)

News / Earth Hour - possible in Poland? [62]

I said,warm,not hot

It still can be very tricky.
Hot water will shatter the windshield. Warm water might, depending on the temperature differences of water and the glass. If it doesn't then, in minus 20 it will freeze on the glass in seconds. To avoid that, the car engine should be running during the process, to heat the glass. In other words we're back to square one - you gotta warm run the engine for a few minutes before driving.

Pouring warm water in winter has also some negative side effects on the car's paint job. If the car needs to be repainted then I wonder what kind of greenhouse footprint does the painting have. Or how much greenhouse gas does it take to replace rusted car parts. of course, warming water up ain't free either. It does take energy to do that.

In addition, virtually all car manufacturers recommend running the cars engine for a few minutes before driving. This reduces wear an tear of the engine and other mechanical parts. Again, the production of these also consumes large amounts of energy.

USA, Canada / New York trip suggestions [56]

The last time I stayed in Queens

That's where I lived. In Astoria in a Greek-Italian neighborhood so it wasn't that bad. Still, just 10 blocks away things were completely different

I left it open as per my host advice in order not to have th locks damaged

I dunno about leaving the car open. Nothing guarantees safety there, so about the only thing you can do is not leave anything in plain sight inside a vehicle. Not even a bag with used coffee cups. They won't know there is nothing of value but you'll still lose one of the cars windows or a lock. The only issue is out of state registration plates. For some reason they will attract burglars.

In all, during 5 years my car was broken into only two times :)

Central Park is OK (during the day) but Brooklyn ain't Paris. It even ain't really NYC. Make sure you know where you're going before you take a stroll around Brooklyn ;)

thats why its called the big apple as jazz musicians view new York as the Holy Grail of Jazz go to the Blue note on West Third near 6th ave.

Nope. Jazz has nothing to do with the origin of the term.

USA, Canada / New York trip suggestions [56]

Depending on how much doe you have, get a hotel in Jersey City, NJ (right across the river and the commute is good and easy), or somewhere in Mid Town Manhattan. Manhattan is much more convenient (of course) but expect to spend $500+ per night. One of the mid range hotels in Jersey City should set you off by no more than $120 a night.

If you're driving then park the car for however long you are staying there, and get a multiple trip subway pass.

There is a sh--load of stuff to see and do in NYC so plan ahead to get the most out of it. Especially if one of the long weekend's day is Monday. Make sure places you want to visit are actually open on those days.

Museums I liked:
53rd St - American Folk Art Museum and Museum of Modern Art
5th Ave. and 42nd Street - New York Public Library
2nd Ave. (downtown) Ukrainian Museum
5th Ave. (upper Manhattan) Guggenheim Museum

No idea about Jazz clubs though. Only concerts I've been to were in Pink Floyd in Madison Square Garden and Simon and Garfunkel in Central Park.

News / Organized Crime: Polish Gang Is Making Profitable Business Of Robberies [60]

I can see that attacking Polish people continues in this 'Polish' forum, eh?

What attacking?
I see this as a positive article. It shows that Poles are capable of good team work and the group of enterprising Poles are making profits after all. If they robbed and got nothing out of it.. now that would be stupid, wouldn't it?

UK, Ireland / Social control in Polish communities in Ireland, UK and elswhere [40]

I never felt any kind of social pressure. No more than I felt in Poland. But then, I am not the one to be pressured, and if someone doesn't like my ways, oh well, I'll be the first to tell them staying in my company is not compulsory.

As for the parties, I guess it'll depend. Sometimes, being a foreigner, not understanding the language and all the little social nuances that are common in various cultures you might feel more left out having been invited to the party than staying at home.

Its called scrambled egg

We know the term, but that blob on the bread doesn't look like it. It's kinda too pale for a real egg.

News / Thank to Polish people for current relations with Ukraine [89]

miranda's account sounds like what my experience was in regards to Ukrainians. I am not one. The very word "Ukrainiec" had a negative undertone, and that is the official name of the nationality. The relations between Poles and Ukrainians were not easy, to say the least, and the UPA (active till late 40's) did not help at all. Kinda like crossing the US/Canada border - don't line up behind a Middle Eastern looking people.

There was a lot of suspicion and the pro-communist hysteria. Everybody was a suspect for any reason, or for no reason at all. It really didn't matter whether you were a Ukrainian or Polish, although an obvious Eastern dialect most Ukrainians had gave them away.

As for forced resettlements - your ethnic background didn't matter either. My wife's family was forced to move to Wroclaw (not that is was such a bad thing), and my parents received an order to move to Zielona Gora in late 1960's. Those were the "Ziemie Odzyskane" (regained lands) and few Poles felt comfortable there. The government made sure that the vacuum left by expelled Germans was filled with Polish citizens. Many did not feel at home for decades, and the "Germans will come back" was a the minds of many.

News / March of Tolerance in Krakow [478]

Society itself produces gay u cannot have a society without them.

Yes you can.

So if u were to have sexual relations without the chance of pregnancy its unnatural and against the basic principle of life? Thats all anal sex is sexual relations without any chance of pregnancy.

Correct. Sex is pleasurable but from biological standpoint it's not about pleasure but about procreation. The purpose of anus is not sex, btw.

You have flawed logic.I suppose Catholic priests should also be outlawed and sent for mental health care because they dont(publicaly) reproduce......

My logic isn't flawed at all, yours is. I'm talking about biology, you're talking about human law/ethics.

And yes, celibacy is against the basic drive of life too.
