Language / Gwara Śląska [24]

Well, this thread disappeared quickly. I still have the book so can test anyone who wants to be tested. Even Silesians but preferably not from Chorzów or Ruda Śląska as they will likely know all of them.

Language / Anyone use "SERWUS"? [46]

The guy who repairs my bike always says serwus. It does have a Germanic feeling to it so I shouldn't be surprised that a Silesian comes out with it.

Life / Talk-sex in Poland...are Poles really prude? [44]

This is a spicy thread for Friday night. Yeah, pgtx, just what were you thinking? ;) ;)

They are a little prudish but viewing sex as a private matter can hardly be considered weird.

Life / Who drinks more: Poles or Russians? [50]

The Luxembourgers drink the most per head but they also spurn the most polyglots so there's a lesson to be learned there :)

Life / Poland not so cheap anymore!! [47]

Wow, this thread was cut down. A lot of expensive stores are popping up as if the country has suddenly found real wealth. Yes, wages/salaries have been rising steadily but prices have been rising at a disproportionate rate.

Life / Poles that have lived or live abroad are they different? [68]

I guess their materialism was just suppressed before, southern, and that's the mistake you are making. They didn't have the means to be so materialistic before and now they can be. The instincts were likely there, though.

Slavic traits, for example?

Life / Poland not so cheap anymore!! [47]

Very true. What you see is a substantial mark-up on the recommended price (sugerowana cena on the side of beer bottles). You will see ever greater numbers of people claiming back for the bottle.

Cigarettes too. They are trying to raise the price to the European level and should have it up to 10PLN in no time at all.

Property is generally overpriced for what you get.

It's a time for being lean right enough.

UK, Ireland / Sad life of a Polish immigrant in the UK. Ch. 2 - Stress [63]

I'm in regular contact with many Brits on FB. I'm meeting up with a guy who went back to Southend but came back here due to the difficult conditions and prices.

It's hard for some and easy for others.

Shock therapy?

Gumishu, this is about Poles that have lived abroad and not Tusk. I wanted only to make a passing comment on him. Compared to other leaders, I feel him to be weak, sorry.

Any thoughts on the thread, Gumi?

Dealing with different people is such an important skill, it cannot be overstated. Poland will, in its own time, become more international. Their skills will stand them in good stead then. The lure of the girls seems to be enough for some people. Some places are run anachronistically, yes, but we can't blame them at all. We must always pinch ourselves as a reminder that it was imposed and it was a regime that inculcates/entrenches certain ways of doing things. I sometimes think that Tusk, being rather weak, was talked out of the changes to reduce bureaucracy.

First Certificate of English and Cambridge Advanced English but I'm sure you knew that ;)

I echo that, spiritus! Super insights. Life in Blighty really isn't that great at all. Some Polish people don't really realise what they have. You don't have some of the nonsense that Britain has, e.g job share and excessive PT options.

Poles put stress on themselves but they could do with kicking back and enjoying the numerous pleasurable options of life here.

That's also true enough, Seanny. There are many opportunities with global firms here for those who have markedly improved their English. Competition is fierce but the acquisition of English really improves their chances.

They learn that there is a world beyond FCE and CAE ;)

Super comment by Torny :) :) I really think he has a point with this to a certain extent. Sexual would be very low on my list of words associated with Polish women.

Those that went abroad may well be a different story.

UK, Ireland / SHOCK NEWS - Polish man moves to Poland [9]

Where is our favourite storyteller? He was here earlier but sporadically pops in. Any stories of guys who have come back and been disappointed, happy or reformed?

Life / Polish remedies for Flu [28]

This is gonna be useful. In the space of 2 days, I've seen many people come down with colds which may turn into the flu. I have a feeling it's gonna spread :(

Food / Is it just me, or is the Polish diet rather unhealthy? [119]

The Poles benefit from earlier finishing times and this has a positive effect on their dietary habits. Finishing at 9pm like I often do is not that healthy though I try to keep to a balanced diet.
