Life / Help with calculating expat population in Poland [8]

help with calculating expat poulation

Difficult one this.

1 With the more wealthy being able to fly back and forth it's difficult to put them into the equation.
2 An expat for me is someone who has been here at least a year or two.
3 There are large number of foreign students here. But of course they are not expats until they decide to stay.
4 If we take into account those on the forum and how this number has grown. (in my opinion, not much)

Then I would say, not much. In fact I was talking to a woman who sells property for a local developer the other day and she seemed disappointed that very few foreign folk were buying property here.

An indication to me that people come and go, but don't often stay.
Whatever the government figures are I would suggest it's lower, for my reasons above.

I await the forum's onslaught.

News / Will Poland become green? [122]

It got to +40 in Warsaw

38, 39, 40 degrees is not unusual for one or two days days.

The other extreme is Winter. It can drop below 10 degrees, but not for long periods.

Wieliczka is not really polluted, and absolutely safe for children

I know this. I was wondering if the article had something to do with children who have asthma. There are or were children who spent time underground at the mine, to improve their health.

I know this has nothing to do with heavily poluted air above ground.

In other words. Did someone latch on to the story of Wieliczka and turn it around.

News / Will Poland become green? [122]

So it looks stable.

The greenest city in Poland is Wroclaw. That will change in the future as more buildings go up. There are moves to address this [green] issue, but they are being ignored.

My point was maybe it's time to stop burning coal just because you have it.

Thousands of tons of Polish coal are sent to the UK and burnt there.

Poland didn't have a winter last year! Remember?

But the one before that was the coldest in living memory. And this year it's bloody cold.
We still have four seasons here. Meaning... last year was just a mild winter....it happens sometimes.

"We learned, for example, that in some areas of Poland, children are regularly taken underground into deep mines to gain some respite from the buildup of gases and pollution of all sorts in the air.

I'm not going to trawl through the article. Is the above quote in relation to the hospital in Wieliczka

Life / What if it's not possible to see the "little star" to start PL Christmas? [11]

I am trying to reinstate some of the lost polish traditions into our family. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The first star in the sky can appear in the late afternoon as it will be dark by 4:00pm.

Some people are just getting home from work at this time. So, the star is there when you want it to be there.

Travel / Places to visit Poland for the New Year? [30]

hmmmm Krakow/Wroclaw or Warsaw???

You'll need a ticket [in advance] for some clubs, if not all, in the Rynek area of Wroclaw.

Even pubs get booked up.

Food / practical way to reheat pierogi [12]

Blast them in the microwave oven. But not too much coz they sometimes dry out a little.

You should be able to boil 30 - 40 in a big pan. That's still at least three panfulls

If you fry them... you'll end up using two or three big frying pans at the same time.

Back to your own method. Two big trays in the oven. You don't want to be trying some new method on Christmas Eve.

Work / ABOUT POLISH WORKERS [28]

dheva,

Why don't you just put up a sign that says: No Smoking.

If your employees are working in someones house or office. Then it would be normal to ask for permission to smoke.

Life / Is there Christmas shopping madness in Poland? [8]

I've just come back from the shops. They weren't all open and there wasn't too many people. It can get busy at Christmas though.

I think we buy less here because of December 6th, and Christmas Eve is more about token gifts.

Life / New skyscraper in Warsaw... [58]

Is Donald Trump moving to Poland or something? :)

As I understand things. The richest guy in Poland is building the one in Wroclaw and then taking the penthouse.

Food / Fresh Cranberries for a Christmas dinner in Warsaw? [6]

Does anyone know where I can buy fresh (or frozen) cranberries?

I know that you can get them in a jar. Go to a good supermarket and have a look. They will be near the pickles and bottled sauces.

Life / New skyscraper in Warsaw... [58]

Ok these are nice pictures but when are they going to build all those skyscrapers?

The Wroclaw project has already started. They have cleared the area and are ahead of schedule. It will probably be another year or two before they excavate the area and get the foundations back up to ground level.

Some buildings go up at the rate of a floor a week. Others might go up at a floor a month.
I imagine Wroclaw's tallest building [and possibly Poland's] will be ready in about five years.
Some of the apartments are already on sale at a minimum of 10,000zl per sq meter.

Mohammed peace be upon him came with the legislation thats says men and women are equal with regards to their rewards punishments. But their duties are different and thats obvious a man cant give birth and stay at home to feed the kids , cook and clean. Ofcouse he can help, but these are parts of the duties of a woman . just like men have to work while women dont have to work.

Mohammed said that a woman is worth half a man. 2:282

Except the feeble among men, and the women........... 4:98

Life / New Polish I.D. card. [Dowód Osobisty] - big fine if you don't apply [55]

how do they expect everyone having applied for the id before the end of the year?
or are they just waiting to fine people??

The deadline is for lazy people who have actually had a couple of years to sort it out.

There were no queues a month ago, until they said the fine would be about 4,000zl

Waiting until the last moment is the Polish way.

Life / New Polish I.D. card. [Dowód Osobisty] - big fine if you don't apply [55]

If you are Polish and don't apply for the new I.D before the end of the year you will find yourself with a very big fine and possibly prison.

If you are in Wroclaw the queue starts at about 06:30. If you join the queue at 09:00 or 10:00 it might be too late for that day.

I have no idea what it's like in other cities

Cost: 30zl

Study / School list for Poland [11]

Is there anywhere online whereby you can view what schools are in a certain area of Poland

Some newspapers have lists of schools. A sort of league table for when pupils want to choose their next school.

I still don't know how you could access the relevant info though.

UK, Ireland / 13,000 Polish births this year, in the UK [180]

Have you been to any resorts in the Czech

I don't ski or snowboard. But I know plenty people who go to the Czech Republic rather than the Polish mountains. It's no problem for people from Wroclaw. They often bring back a lot of beer too.

my apologies if I ridiculed you a bit the other night

It's forgotten

I wish the Poles could take a note from their neighours and step up to the plate,

When it comes to skiing/snowboarding most Polish folks would probably agree.

then you would know Czechs are not well liked for how they treated the Germans during the war.

I think you'll find that young Polish skiers couldn't give a toss about the war. Especially in the evening when they are drinking Czech beer.
