Life / Polish novels in English. [7]

Can anyone recommend classic examples or even not so classic Polish novels that have decent English translations. Until now I have only read Polish history books and would like to branch out. I am interested in books most Poles would have read or are considered great examples of Polish literature, I know you lose something in translation like reading Pan Tadeusz in English doesn't make much sense, I wish my Polish was good enough but that will take years. Thanks.

News / Secret CIA Prisons in Poland [54]

That's the first time you've admitted to Americans doing something wrong. You've actually earned a little bit of respect here..;-)

Respect from you is not necessary. But if you spent more time listening instead of looking for flaws you would find I am one of the biggest critics of Bush and America here. I just find the attitude towards Americans and American English so stereotypical adults should be beyond that. If you read any previous posts of mine before criticising my "Yankee Twang" even though I am from New York where we don'thave one.

Moreover since many here are good enough to join us from non-english speaking countries we are very liberal about proper English and spelling, and often i don't have much time to write so I make mistakes very often because nobody cares what type of english we use here got it.

News / Secret CIA Prisons in Poland [54]

If there is a CIA prison used for torture in Poland I am not surprised. We all saw the photos of Abu Gareeb(no idea how to spell it) the POW prison where American soldiers humiliated Iraqi's. The Bush family connections to god knows what run very deep. They make a killing literally and figuratively by dealing with the middle east and have since the 1900's. Bushie's dad used to run the CIA so as big an idiot as Bush is his people are very powerful. No news there. I truly hope one day the Bush family is brought to trial for all their atrocities as more and more will be revealed one day.

News / What can Poland do to maintain its Ethnic Integrity? [118]

We are in the era of globalisation; maybe you should pop over to hitler's grave (if you can find it) and weep...;-)

Wow Firestud we agree on something, so you just hate Americans?

News / the most true Post about Poland ever( the truth will set you free) [29]

Nobody will kill you for that Kruk. I think that you are exaggerating here but I would definitely like to hear your point of view.

I think PIS uses religion to establish themselves as the family values party and perhaps investors are a little leary of doing business with what they don't completely understand. And the church has an unusually strong influence here which may sometimes be detrimental to business. Your right it is a bit of an exaggeration and I am not against family or morality or faith, but most strong economies don't have such a strong Catholic voice as does Poland. Not that Poland has to copy these other nations and the church has also done some tremendous good for Poland I just think its harder to be a so called God fearing person and be a successful business person, sad but true.

don't think that they know exactly how to do that

excellent point. its easy to say they should do something without offering any answers.I agree Poland needs some time and I hope many people go to other countries learn from their business practices and make the necessary changes here so Polska is what it could be. Again not that all the answers are in the west, but there are some things to be learned and expanded on to help Polska.

News / the most true Post about Poland ever( the truth will set you free) [29]

Away Guy, I'mhappy too but I am lucky I have a skill that is needed and I can take care of my kids and wife on my income, but in America it would be impossible on a teachers salary. I mean I don't save much but I can go on vacation once a year and take it pretty easy all summer, but I make decent money here I cannot fathom how people have kids and live on less than 2000 zloty!

What I am saying is Poland has great potential and the Gov. seems to be choking it.

Just curious what would you like to do for work here Fisz? If you don't mind me asking.

They need hope Fisz sounds simple but I talk to young folks everyday and the sound like your GF. Those with decent jobs and the possibility to advance stay. The others leave. They feel that the older generation of politicians cares little for them and they will be replaced by people they train and the cycle will go on forever.

Zion has a valid point, I think. The Government could and should be doing more to encourage Poles to form their own businesses. But we see mostly foreign companies taking control, but that is the way the world is going. I think Poles are extrememly clever and given a fair field to play on meaning easier business regulations and speedier processes, the economy would pick up from within as well as from the outside.

I really don't believe Zion has an anti-Poland axe to grind.
I see it too Poland is held back by an inefficient system. And dare I say it (please don't kill me) religion.

News / Nazism in Poland - A recipe for mass suicide? [176]

It's typical really, 3 Americans who just can't seem to keep quiet; it appears to be an endemic problem.

Furthermore, I don't need your advice on who to talk to ...or on anything else for that matter.

you do have a lot of time on your hands...are you unemployed or something?

All negative.

"American English" (if there is such a thing) or true English in Poland? Please don't mess up their spelling

Negative stereotype with superiority of English spelling over American plus the comment (if there is such a thing) any intelligent person knows we have different vocabulary and have different accents. Obviously I teach Americanized english and don't bother taking the "what can an American know about English" road so old so weak.

See how many Poles respond to your topic as i said its been answered you yourself answered it

how could any intelligent Slav resort to such stupidity...!!

News / Nazism in Poland - A recipe for mass suicide? [176]

Mr. FISZ - Whether a view is "stupid" or not is a matter of opinion; maybe, from time to time, you should give in to the need to "listen" and not "voice" your opinions. Try it sometime....it's also a more polite form of conversation...;-)

Follow your own advice to fisz! furthermore I think we all agree its pathetic what more do you want? Further furthermore I live in Poland and have for three years and have also been puzzled by this Neo-Nazism. I must admit this is not typical behavior although i have expeienced it from British people before to assume superiority over Americans or to perpetuate stereotypes that are anti-american so old, tired, uneducated and unhelpful.

Lastly if you don't like the fact anyone is free to respond to any post join another forum.
We have plenty of people expressing negative ideas and insults we don't need more.
Many times though if people have opposing views and they present them in the proper manner a better understanding has been reached. I believe you were answered in Full as to your post re-read all responses and move on.

News / Poland's Growth Fastest in 10 Years [95]

Puzzler check out any website that lists the ease of doing business in a specific country.
Try to open your own business in poland and see how long it takes you, compared to another country. See what your taxes, and ZUS are compared to other countries last I heard it was the fourth highest in the industrialized world (its called a tax "wedge")

The clerks I mean to kick out are the people who work in Government offices now who start a telephone conversation with a friend instead of helping the person in line, or going on break with people waiting on line. They should realize its their job to help you.

I simply think Poland needs a complete restructuring of how they operate.
And Giertych is crazy.

News / EU or America - which country is better to work now? [56]

Mexicans are generally very warm hospitable people, in California when your car breaks down usually its a Mexican who stops to help you out.
I would kill for a real Mexican restaurant in Poland real burrito, al pastor with Guacamole!

News / Nazism in Poland - A recipe for mass suicide? [176]

I was interested in the opinion of the poles on what's happening in their country; not yours.

this is a "forum" meaning all who have an opinion may comment on anything.
Get a blog.
I have seen skinhead and neo-nazi's in Poland (well ok on youtube but they were in Poland)
There are disillusioned people everywhere who believe whites must fight to keep the race pure and that minorities will destroy the moral fibre of their pre-dominantly white countries. It is very very pthetic and sad.

And I believe Polish Neo-Nazis fail to see the irony of their choice.

Love / Do Polish Women Date American Men? [46]

How many polish people in Poland do you see marry interracially, seriously. Just stating a fact..

Well honey at my English school we have teachers from India/Canada, Brazil, England, America, Germany all married to Polish women. My wife also has two friends married to African-Americans. I think once Polish women get a sample they enjoy the exotic fruits.

You just don't get an ample sample in Polska. And I do think most Polish women leave to their spouses' countries after marriage, because once they see another country operating properly they don't like to return. But theKruk stayed as did all the other gentlemen at my school.

You hit some good points, here I observe a government in Poland that seems to do everything to keep Poland backward and behind. The main problem is old Soviet Bureaucracy in a modern world. Kick out all the old unhelpful clerks and start over, and Poland will soar.

I have always said that if a country will make it in the West it will be the Czech Republic-they are miles ahead of Poland and always have been.

I thought up a million ways to refute this comment but then I looked at the map and it does apear that Michal you are right. the Czech Rep. clearly is moving westward faster than Poland and it is easily miles more west than Poland.

You can clearly see for yourselves Czech is further West.
Thanks Michal!

News / Some Poles burning American flag [299]

Merrick, i agree the countries you mentioned have legitimate reasons to be angry with America and if they choose to burn the American flag It is their right to do so. I also agree Americas Visa policy towards Poland is scandalous and if you will yes Polonophobic. But the phrase you wrote "a great many americans are Polonophobic" I don't think is truly accurate. I am sure in Chicago and other cities with large sections of new Polish immigrants there is some ill-behavior towrds poles. But most Americans don't have any problems with Poles, but as I think about it Americans have been duped the current administration into thinking all immigrants are stealing jobs and money, but the target of this ill will are usually Mexicans and central americans, but some may lump all immigrants into this group. The burning of the American flag while it is not something I take lightly is certainly any persons right, and I am very I repeat ver saddened that my countries current administration has done more damage to America's already tarnished image around the world than i would have dreamt possible. But I have never been attacked by any Polish person for being American sure they attack Bush et. al. But never has a Pole attacked me personally quite the opposite.(I live in Poland by the way)

Lastly I don't believe Freebird to be racist towards Poles or any others. I think you have reacted too strongly But I think I understand your point in general. quite often I am ashamed of America. Mainly because of the failed potential greatness Amercia could possess. But any country is only as great as its idiots.

News / Some Poles burning American flag [299]

As for the Americans, great many of them, including 'freebird,' are Polonophobic racists. That's a fact.

Pretty tall words to say about Freebird where are the facts?
I doubt most Americans are Polonophobic as they don't have enough contact with Poles, only in Chicago and to a lesser extent New York. Furthermore most Americans don't know what the word Polonophobe means (fear of Poles?)

News / Some Poles burning American flag [299]

If its a flag I bought or someone else did and they don't mind me burning it let it burn.
It was made in China anyway. Free speech. the USA Gov. does terrible things to people all over the world daily and it does good things too. Its just a piece of material. Yeah I have gotten weapy eyed seeing it especially as they folded it after draping it over my fathers coffin but he fought for our right, to have the right to burn it. I don't believe in the saying "My country right or wrong" And yes its been done and will be done again and again and again etc. ad nauseum. A country is not its flag.

Furthermore having a President like Bush representing America and the fact that many Americans elected him is far more offensive to the nation than burning the flag.

News / EU or America - which country is better to work now? [56]

I have met quite a few young people from poland while they were visiting the states, (I help organize parties and events etc.)and its roughly 60% go back 40% stay or try to stay in the states. Usually you must have a high level of English to get a very good job in your field of study, and most polish masters degrees are only accepted as bachelors degrees in the states. I think most consider the UK a better option these days, for many reasons. Most go back simply because they "miss home" quite understandible.
