UK, Ireland / What do Polish people in Ireland think of Irish food? [90]

Bulmers is a great drink to get a girl in the mood.

You might want to fix your picture for that, as the Bulmers in your picture is an English cider, in the UK (due to copyright laws i believe) what you in the Republic know as Bulmers is re-branded as Magners :)

As for breakfasts...I could honestly kill you for going into so much detail about the Ulster Fry...I can almost taste it and I only have instant noodles at the moment!

But it does not sound too dissimilar to some fry ups I've had in Glasgow...just with tattie scones replacing the potato bread and fried normal bread in place of soda bread. Plus I like a wee slice of haggis on there...and of course a good couple of bits of Lorne! Mmmmmm!

That coddle stuff sounds immense too!

News / New York Post : "Polish" Death Camps and more [278]

Or just bad reporting?.

I think this is most likely. Badly worded reports picked up on by eagle eyed Poles. Let's be honest...how many people are going to think that it was Poland that was in charge of these camps and not the Nazis?

UK, Ireland / Irish Primary schools to teach Polish [223]

It is a shame so few speak it, mass immigration will kill the language dead

It is a shame, it is one of my biggest regrets is never having the option to speak Gaelic at school.

Scottish Gaelic is all but dead (except on the far West Coast where they are trying to revive it), I don't think it was mass immigration that did that though. Just young people and the way that they think. They would probably much rather speak the same language as their rap singers and paris hiltons. Not wanting to say English as such, because, well the last time someone young sent me a text, it's really nothing like English.

UK, Ireland / Irish Primary schools to teach Polish [223]

They have no wish to integrate, if they did surely they would be learning Irish?

Just out of curiosity, how many people in Northern Ireland speak Irish as their first language?

Infact, on a day to day basis, how many people in the Republic speak Irish as their first language.

I am not having a go, just curious, I have lots of friends from both sides of the border and, even in the company of other Irish people, they seem to speak in English all the time.

Life / Why build a supermarket with 20 checkouts with only 3 till staff? [46]

Changi is the opposite end of the scale to Polish Tesco. I would say they have too many staff, always pestering you and asking if you want this or that. It doesn't annoy me as much as sitting looking at loads of different checkouts with no staff while i am waiting in a queue for ages.

As for the car parking thing. Is that not to discourage people just using the car park and not shopping in the shop? You would think they might do a validation scheme that means your fine doesn't count if you have a receipt of over a certain amount. This isn't supermarket sweep!

UK, Ireland / Irish Primary schools to teach Polish [223]

How is it enhanced? Polish is not an important language, and I dare say the only ones learning it will be the Poles.

Well even if it's not an "important" language. Learning any language is a benefit to young people, especially ones so young. I wish I had learned ore languages in early primary...would maybe have helped me in later life.

So in that case would you say that learning the Irish Gaelic is useless as well? It's not exactly a hugely spoken or important language. But I know I would love to have learned Gaelic at school!

Life / Differing Brand Names In Poland/Europe and the UK [20]

Right, so I have noticed a good few products that have the same packaging and is pretty much the same product but with a different name. So far I have found a few obvious ones:

Opel = Vauxhall
Rexona = Sure
Axe (not sure about this one, or if i am thinking of another country) = Lynx
Isana = Nivea?

Anyone got any others?

Life / why do People in Poland speak so quietly? [23]

I totally agree. I got stuck behind this guy in Glasgow once who was doing a spot of money transferring and taking money out of 4 (yes...4!!!) cards. If it wasn't for the fact it was the only ATM for ages I would have gone to the next one...but at the time I didn't fancy the 5 minute walk and by the time he was halfway through and i realised how long he would be I had dug my heels in.

But seriously, 1 card, put it in, enter your pin, select "cash" and go on your merry way!

Life / why do People in Poland speak so quietly? [23]

t's a matter of convenience and not going into one more place or searching for an ATM at a place you've never been to before.

I suppose so, but it does still seem quite strange to me. I find most places take cards these days...and my bank lets me use ATMs of any bank for free so that's never been a concern.

How interesting though. What will they think of next?

Genealogy / "-ski" last names more desirable in Poland? [28]

It was a joke (albeit much funnier in my head!), i was insinuating that the -cki ending was made up because of someone wanting a more noble name but spelling it wrong.

Made me laugh...but then I am very simple.

Life / How much Zloty to have an average life in Poland? [98]

it's perfectly possible to live in Warsaw or anywhere in Poland for 2500zl a month.

Perfectly possible yes, but not easy. It does mean making a lot of sacrifices. But if you are willing to share a flat, cook (or eat in bar mleczny) and not go out too much then it's easy enough. However it depends the life you want to lead.

And drive through ATMs/stores - wait a bit longer and they will be there.

You think, I have lived in the UK, Singapore, New Zealand and Dubai and haven't ever seen a drive through ATM. I can't see the use of them to be honest. When do you need to have cash when you're driving?

UK, Ireland / The paradox of Polish drivers getting car insurance in the UK [14]

I had the same problem in the UK when I passed my test as a 17 year old male. It was either ridiculously expensive or some companies just laughed at me and said to try again when I was 23 or had 4 years driving experience...it's ridiculous!

Food / Lamb in Krakow [11]

Cheers, that's good to know. I do like a bit of lamb from time to time.

Just to extend this thread a bit. St Andrew's Day is fast approaching and I want to make a haggis. Does anyone know of a butcher where I can get lung, heart and liver of lamb/mutton? Or just any butchers who deal in sheep in Kraków? I am sure if they sell any cuts of sheep I can source it from them.

Also can someone help out with a bit of vocab, what is lungs, heart and liver in Polish. Is there a word for the lot (in Scotland we say the pluck) or is it individual?

Life / Looking for heartburn remedies in Krakow. [36]

baking soda

To be fair, it will work, but it's only really the bicarbonate of soda that works. No need to spend the extra money.

beside... you've been in Krakow for such short period of time and got heartburn already? shame...

Ach, these things happen...I am fully healthy now. Just got a bit of a hangover...but nothing a day in bed watching rubbish TV and listening to the Ashes won't fix :D

Life / How much Zloty to have an average life in Poland? [98]

I've been paying 9.50-10 PLN for beer in Krakow for a long time

The Rynek might be good for watching the world go by, but there are other places you can do the same and it will not cost as much. Le Scandale...one of the most expensive places in Kazimierz is only 8PLN a beer and you can sit outside there :)

Life / I'm an American who lived in Poland for 6 years. I'm not welcome anymore. [169]

Dont forget that many poles go to usa on visit visas and stay there for forever.

Not just Poles I imagine though. And not just the States. I know numerous people who go places on holiday and stay for years even though are not meant to. I know it's a hassle to get proper documents and stuff...but surely that is better than getting turfed out your home in a dawn raid?

Its not only in American from what I have gathered on this forum over the last year.
I see much more hatred coming from the UK

I would say that is because the mass Polish immigration in the US happened a good while ago (as with the Irish and Italians). However the immigration to the UK and Ireland is a much more recent thing (with the EU border regulations). Hence why, at the moment there is more hatred coming from the UK.

As for the original post. If you openly admit that you are living and working in Poland illegally then how can you then complain when they want you out? Yes, maybe it was great for you in the past, but, as you said, those days are gone. If you want to live and work here then do it legally, just as I have had to do when going to New Zealand and Australia...and would have to do if i wanted to go to the US.

Life / You know you have been living in poland too long when.... [73]

but Polish food does lack flavour and variety compared to many places.

I am not Polish and I disagree. I have had some lovely, flavoursome meals over here in Poland.

But yes, most expats will agree with you that Polish food is bland and no good. I love it though.
