News / Poland's Future Includes Fewer Poles, More Foreigners [324]

Who cares that arabs, blacks or jews settled in Poland, that's obviously no threat to Polish culture, since most of these immigrants will simply move into the lower or middles class, with only very few making it into the upper class, they'll just move to certain neighborhoods and carry on with their lives.

But what about the rampant commercialism that's taking over the world? isn't that more of a threat to an individual Polish culture or any country's homegrown culture/lifestyles? Marketers and advertising agencies flooding the streets, tv's, radios, magazines etc turning everyone into just another capitalist consumer? Everyone wearing American or big European clothing brands, listening to mainstream commercial American and European music, and adopting the lifestyles that come with both, at the expense of Polish fashion, music, art etc..

This is clearly the problem here.

Your last points are interesting Ogorki. For one though ,my Polish girlfriend is damn gorgeous so I've never felt any temptation. and I'd say that all girls (and boys) are naturally provocative dancers, that's been my experience in NYC.

However, I've been wary of clubs and bars for the exact reason that If one guy were to say something to me, I would have no support, I'd either have to shut up, or fight and then get beat up by all his boys - and then feed the "violent-black-man" stereotype.

News / Poles honour 'Cold Warrior' Ronald Reagan [92]

By 1989, a bipartisan Republican/Democratic initiative in the US favoured economic sanctions (realized as the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act),

shopgirl, the legislation you're talking about was passed by congress, vetoed by Reagan, but congress overrode his veto, the first time an American president's foreign policy veto was overridden in the 20th century.

I'll have to dig more but Meese was with Reagan. Baker with Bush senior.

This study came long after the war began, but i'd say that Baker and Meese are irrelevant since they have little say in the current administration, which is dominated by more powerful reaganites.

What else would a Russian say Masks?? Do you actually think they'd admit that Reagan's policies helped bring them down? LOL, wtf?

But what they say makes sense. Like I said, before the regime collapsed, they had planned on using tougher measures against the US, even Nuclear attack, but then suddenly, Gorbachev, a man with a completely different philosophy, accedes to power and predictably, the Soviets change course.

What the Reagan administration did of course, was simply keep the pressure up. The CIA suppling stingers to guerillas in Afghanistan is not very different from the CIA training Russian spies, sending them back to the USSR to commit acts of terrosism against the government during the 40's up to the 60's S Reagan's policy was much of the same old. But yeah, he kept the pressure up, he did this for four years before Gorbachev came to power, Thatcher for Six, but it seems with no success, it seems that the soviets were intent on matching western power until Gorbachev.

Anybody that "hates" Reagan is a clown.

Am I supposed to base my like or dislike of Reagan solely on his administration's operations against the soviet regime? That would be unwise, as Reagan extended his reach to the middle east, Africa, and South America, where he can boast an atrocious record of murderous, counter-democratic actions. Anyone responsible for such things are criminals and justly hated as such.

News / Poles honour 'Cold Warrior' Ronald Reagan [92]

In fact, Bush was advised repeatedly by Reagan cabinet people and his own father's people not to commit to Iraq

Hey Wahldo, actually, Reagan Cabinet people like Rumsfeld and Cheney were intent on attacking Iraq from the start. It seems that they never advised the President to not commit to Iraq. The exception might have Been Colin Powell, but that's it, he was a lone ranger, but if you can tell me who an when, I'd appreciate it.

Many can speak loudly indeed but just few have common sense and Reagan was among them. He increased political pressure on Soviet regime this deserve some respect. Unlike majority of European leaders whom never had such courage. Reagan also needed to face masses of loudly ignorants in his own country.

Hey I'm sure that the Reagan administration kept the pressure up, the pressure that had been set decades prior by people like George Kennan. But that he kept the pressure up was not enough to win the cold war. Usually, when a country begins arming itself against another, the other country follows suit, witness today's botched efforts to 'intimidate' Iran and North Korea. Well the Soviet Union reacted in a similar way - that's human nature. As much as the US cranked the heat, the Soviets folowed suit, as they were paranoid that the US might actually launch an attack, possibly, a nuclear attack in the wake of NATO's Able Archer military exercises in 1983. These exercises simply provoked a like reaction.

Anatoly Dobrynin, soviet Ambasaador to the US, said that:

"the impact of Reagan's hard-line policy . . . was exactly the opposite of the one intended by Washington . It strengthened those in the Politburo, the Central Committee, and the security apparatus who had been pressing for a mirror-image of Reagan's own policy."

The change came with Gorbachev, who was apprently of a more peaceful complexion then his predecessors. His peaceful overtures formed the crucial catalyst for the Cold War's conclusion. He came equipped with a philosophy of glasnost ("openness"), perestroika ("restructuring"), demokratizatsiya ("democratization"), and uskoreniye ("acceleration", of economic development). He also took into account the thinking of, in his own words, "the public and the scientific community, of the movements of physicians, scientists, and ecologists, and of various antiwar organizations." By the latter he meant the anti-nuclear movement which had also impressed the Reagan administration.

As one of Gorbachev's close aids, Aleksandr Yakovlev, mentioned, Reagan's military build-up played no role in the Soviet Regime's subsequent behavior. "It played no role. None." And as another aide stated, soviet changes "not only ripened inside the country but originated within it." SO it seems clear that the main spring for action was Gorbachev's accession.

You are not only in historic denial but also joining the neocons in mixing historic issue of Reagan's presidency with current politics. Myself, for sure I'm not under influence of any neocon propaganda and still give him deserved respect.

Actually you're kind of right there, Reagan's approval ratings weren't spectacular at the beginning of his presidency, and reached a low of 46% during the Iran-Contra Scandal. But it is true that he lalso hit a 68% approval rating.

You are wrong. Downfall of the SU was just direct effect of bankruptcy of communist pseudo-economy. Any other issues could just improve the speed of collapse.

Hey I also think that the Soviet Union was on its way out (hence my refusal to give RR credit,) I believe that was sped its collapse was the advent of Gorbachev and the various movements that existed before him and/or subsequent ones that were inspired by him.

Clubbing is not taken that seriously anywhere east of Berlin. That includes Poland and all the way to Vladivostock. If u r/were a seriously well connected hip clubber in NYC, you might as well live off those exciting memories and forget about clubbing in Warsaw.

Yeah thanks for that insight I figured it wasn't such a big deal here in Europe, and rightly so, no matter what venue, nightclubs are still trashy hang-outs, but I must admit some places in NYC were pretty good at making you feel all VIP etc, ego-trips like that are fun once in a while.

News / Poles honour 'Cold Warrior' Ronald Reagan [92]

Was he rated so highly?.

Apparently he wasn't during his presidency, he was held low in popular esteem, but over the years the neo-cons in the US have been deifying him, they've organized a massive PR machine to, among other things, make Ronald Reagan into a saint. It's funny how a group of men with a lot of money can simply decide to make someone a great historic figure when in fact he was just a small man spearheading a criminal presidency. Imagine that they wanted to kick a founding father off our currency to make place for him!!! It drives me insane!!

At least not hate-worthy....

Well I'm just saying that many people are misinformed about his contributions to the cold war, and gloss over his criminal record. A president who indirectly contributes to the suffering of millions across the globe and even at home is hate-worthy.

I wouldn't be so hard on Reagan....

"speak loudly against it"? That makes him a hero? Anyone can do that, it's all a matter of convenience, when it is convenient to do so, and when it is inconvenient to do so. Rhetoric is nothing, the soviets had their own rhetoric for sure.

The downfall of the soviet union was the result of decades of work from American administrations, as well as dogged home-grown resistance in the east, like the solidarity movement in Poland for example (Few government can thrive for long when domestic resistance is overwhelming).

News / Poles honour 'Cold Warrior' Ronald Reagan [92]

Today's "war on terror" is a good example of what the Reagan administration was about, seeing as officials running this war on terror are the same cabinet members that served under Reagan (rumsfeld, cheney, powell, etc...) and launched their first War on terror in the 80's, which in fact strenghtened terrorism in South America during that time.

The Reagan administration also supported the apartheid regime in South Africa at a time when even the congress tried to pass legislation to withdraw all support for the regime. Great Guy that Reagan...

Finally, the idea that it was his administration that helped end soviet dominance is laughable, as Wesley Clark said: "It took four decades of patient engagement to bring down the Iron Curtain, and 10 years of deft diplomacy to turn chaotic, post-Soviet states into stable, pro-Western democracies." Reagan himself was no pioneer or hero. I hate this man, to think that they were thinking of repacing Alexander Hamilton's face on the $10 bill with his!! Hamilton - a soldier, lawyer, writer, philosopher and genius who was a main architect of the nascent American republic, and Reagan - a moronic Hollywood president!

Travel / What are nightclubs like in Warsaw...? [33]

Hey - I haven't hit a single club since I've been here, partly because I was a party promoter in New York who went out 3-4 times a week so I'd had enough. Another reason is that in New York I got everything for free, I went to some of the most exclusive clubs and got in for free regularly without having to stand in line, I would always know someone who had a table so all alcohol was free (I'm bragging I know - sue me!) so I've been wary of going out here, where I'm a nobody who'll be told to stand in line like everyone else and pay for entry and then pay again for drinks.

But my girlfriend has been wanting to go out, and before we try it I wanted to get some second hand reports on nightlife in Warsaw, places to avoid, places "to be seen" what to expect as far as treatment, price? Are ther4e such things as party promoters/hosts here in Poland? I don't want to go through any guide because I wouldn't know where to start, I probably will pick one up anyway, but I'd prefer some feedback from y'all thanks!

The above I dont agree with. It's easy to blame the problems of developing countries on colonialism..

yes it is very easy since the impact is so obvious, especially in africa's case.

masks, Simon Moleke made this a racist thing by accusing Polish girls of being racist because they would not sleep with him without a condom.

That's utter bull, is that all it takes to sleep with Polish girls? Perhaps he said that once or twice, but that wasn't the reason why the slept with him unless they were already profvessional prostitutes.

Other than that I see your point, you state it in an extreme way at times which makes you seem like a complete racist. You came off as someone who would deny Asylum to anyone, be it, Simon Mol or Nelson Mandela. And people on this forum who bring up this Simon Mol thing generally use it as a black people thing. Coming from the US I am completely unfamiliar with such European issues, in US HIV, while probably higher among some minority groups, is still seen as a national problem affecting Americans across the board. While there is racism in the US, I've rarely dealt with people treating me like some kind of interloper spreading aids among white women.

I'm off to work -

shelley doesn't HIV spread from one person to another? Aren't plenty of white people also infected with aids? Are you sying that THEY don't also pass it on to other white people? You'll probably say the only the gay ones do...

So the point is that people get infected with HIV every day, sometimes it's from people from another race, and sometimes from people within their own race. There also news reports of white people infecting other white people with AIDS. For some reason, you choose to lash out only at the ones that are different from you.

What I'm saying is that you're coming from one extreme, and as for myself I don't want to swing to the other extreme either. Obviously Aids is a problem among people from certain African countries, perhaps there should be a screening process in place, or maybe there are other solutions, you can't deny asylum to everybody so what do you suggest other then hating on foreigners?

Perhaps you should edit the part you wrote about the life of young Polish women being pretty sheap in Poland these days...since this statement was based on incomplete information.

I wish people wouldn't look at this case from a racial point of view, as if this was a constant problem, it seems very obvious that this is an exceptoinal case. I think what he did is just as sick as everyone else does, he deserves a life sentence from the evidence that's been made public. But really, the stigma lays on him, not all Africans, and especially not all blacks.

Work / Any english teachers in Poland here with tips to share? [55]

Why are people so frickin touchy, he complained about his experience teaching here, big deal - is he NOT supposed to complain? Surely there are some bad schools here, I've heard stories left and right from Americans working at universities here, where there is so much smoke there must be a fire, however small...

And why suggest that he set up his own school? He's not an entrepreneur he's a teacher, one who's probably used to certain standards that some schools here probably didn't meet. It doesn't mean he should set up his own school. I watch movies all the time and criticise them all the time, it doesn't mean I should make my own...

Life / Teens in Poland, their typical life, schooling, influences, etc. [32]

I have a contact with teens

nice!lol

Even those delinquent teens can be religious no matter how decadent their lifestyles. I once went by my friends house in New York to visit and on the front door was a sticker with the virgin Mary on it - I knew him and his father to be atheists so I asked what's the deal? the father said he put it up to keep the young Hispanics in the building from robbing his apartment because they're all religious. And it worked!
