News / Is it time to tighten gun laws in Poland? [146]

That was suggested some years back...they wanted to ban bikes to reduce the large number of deaths on bikes....i reckon banning cars would be a better idea..it would reduce bike deaths by 80% , car deaths by 100% , and very much reduce truck driver and pedestrian deaths....but then the powers that be drive cars , so a non starter...

I have no problem with hunting

I don,t have a problem with them either , but i do wish they didn,t come on my land to shoot the animals , i kinda like having the animals around...mind you there are not so many to shoot....once i have fired up the Harley....

News / Is it time to tighten gun laws in Poland? [146]

As you might have guessed , i am in favour of gun ownership by responsible people , but i can,t help but notice that the hunters in Poland despite all their training seem to be a bit prone to shooting anything that moves , only recently in Poland a hunter shot his son by accident....

A few years ago i earned some dosh by taking parties of Danish hunters in my 4 x 4 to hunt wild boar , during this hunting some Polish guy who had been drinking shot and killed one of the beaters....I might add that i personally do not hunt , i see no sport in killing an animal just to put its head on your wall , i prefer to shoot them with a camera....

I have no reason to give.

If you are a carpet fitter , fisherman or whatever i think you can argue you need it...i guess it depends on what kind of knife it is...A ten inch combat knife might be seen as over the top for cleaning your pipe out....

Are you sure there are no restrictions as to the possession of knives?

As long as you have a legitmate purpose for having it in Public , its not a problem....having one at home is perfectly legal...i think they are trying to ban Samuri swords...cos some nuts killed with them...

I bet you could get on fine without cars as well...and they kill FAR more people than guns.

Exactly...a point i made earlier....After that looney killed some children in the UK with a gun some groups of parents were successfull in getting hand guns banned in UK....But these parents who i presume all drive cars made no mention of the fact that cars kill huge numbers of children compared to the small number killed by guns...but of course banning cars would affect their own lives , rather than those who follow a sport that the parents have little interest in...

I'm sure Tony Martin agrees.

Tony martin was muppet enough to admit he lay in wait for the bandits..rather than stating they burst through his door as he was sleeping and put him in fear of his life...not a mistake i would make.....

What are the laws of self defence

If somebody comes on my farm and looks like they are a danger to me it isn,t going to matter what the law is...better to be judged by 12 men than carried to the grave by four as they say....

News / Will Poland become green? [122]

he opposes building nuclear plants even tough it is the cleanest way to produce energy.

In 1997 and 1998 i had a wander around a place called Chernobyl and through an area that is known as the dead zone...My belief that nuclear power was a good idea took a bit of a dive during those visits...An aid delivery to a hospital in Belarus where thousands of kids are dying from radiation related illness kinda clinched it....

Remember this was an air-rifle

Some air rifles are powerfull enough to kill if you get shot in the head by one...or you get it shoved up your ass , which is what i would have done to the hero who shot and wounded my cat back in the UK... Shooting is a fun sport , but i do think more could be done to keep them out of the hands of nutters and children....

Oh yes lets ban them all just because of a few nutters....We had this in the UK , one of the reasons i left the place...Kill thousands of kids in the UK with a car , no problem , parents are not going to shout about banning cars , because the parents don,t want to walk their fat asses anywhere , but get a group of childern killed by a nutter with a gun , and all of us normal people who own one lose the right to have it.... I don,t want to see everybody running around with guns , like in the USA , but neither do i want then banned....make guns illegal , and only the criminals will have guns....

Life / Uniformed people in Poland - explanation needed. [17]

a police officer on a motorcycle wears boots,

For the same reason the others do it...catching your trouser leg on a part of the bike if you crash means getting to slide a whole lot further down the road..more gravel rash....

Nothing like a girl in a uniform and carrying a gun

Mmmm just had a warm feeling...remembering the customs lady that checked out out our convoy of aid in Belarus , that was destined for a kids home...The lady had full Russian miliary uniform , an ak47 , and she was stunning looking...She was more than happy to give me her address and phone number , but during the unloading of the aid at another location...the bit of paper with her number one blew away....a tradgedy of epic proportions....

police tuck their trousers in their boots. It just looks stupid

I suppose for the same reason that soldiers do it...it avoids any risk of catching your trouser bottom on things when running , and makes it easier to put on stuff like riot gear , fireproof suits , or whatever...We discovered in Northern Ireland that having a petrol bomb thrown at your feet when your trousers were not tucked into your boots results in a big flame up your trouser leg...ouch..!

Life / Uniformed people in Poland - explanation needed. [17]

After reading a few posts about Okrona guys in supermarkets i decided to ask advice on something i have not fully understood since i came to Poland...Can one of our Polish experts here please explain to me about the function and powers of the various uniformed people in Poland...The Policja i can figure out , but what about the guys who patrol the towns , the Okrona people , and the guys who stop traffic on the roads , sometimes with military police in attendance...Please explain what these people do , do they have power of arrest etc....I have not had a problem with any of these people so far , but it would be handy to know a bit about them...thanks....

Life / Deadly Roads - "Are polish roads really THAT dangerous?" [139]

but my husband's Harley is on it's way

Good to have another Harley rider here...Welcome...I am a Brit who has survived five years of riding my Harley around Poland...I live out in the country , but i have made trips as far as Ukraine on it...I have not had a problem with the Polish drivers ( so far ) its the condition of the roads in some of the cities that have given me some near misses...Mind you the Polish roads are wonderfull compared to those in Ukraine and Belarus , they are deadly...

Real Estate / BUYING A HOUSE IN POLAND.. and having the seller strip it bare.. [12]

I read an old posting by Sean bm about the people he bought a house from turning up to remove anything and everything including door handles etc...made me smile...So here is my story...

I bought my farm a few years back from an old Polish guy and his wife who had lived in the place for a long time....

I found out later that he didn,t really want to move , but he was getting old , his legs didn,t work so well , and his family talked him into selling and getting a flat in a small village....

I had a look round the place , decided it was what i wanted , and a short time later handed the estate agent the money in cash for the farm...

While i was back in the UK sorting things out my Polish friend who was taking care of the Polish end told me that the farmer had asked if he could stay in the farm for a few more months as he wanted to gather in the harvest of apples , pears , grapes and whatever...I had no objection to this , as i was not ready to move in yet , and i thought it better the place was occupied rather than empty...

At last , four months later i arrived in Poland and after a few days delay i was able to move into my new home...

The farmer and his wife called several times to show me how to operate the pump in the well , and make sure i was ok , and i was gratefull for this , but i was less than happy about him wandering around the farm picking up whatever he thought might be usefull to him...

He made several more visits to remove bits of garden hose , garden tools , shelves from the workshop , and piles of stuff that i had heaped up to throw away , now i know that much of this stuff isn,t really included in the house price , but for gods sake he had four months living there after i gave him the money in which to remove any stuff he needed....

His visits were becoming more frequent , much of the stuff he was cramming into his old car was just rubbish , i tried to imagine what his flat must look like with all this crap all over the place...

The final straw came when i came home and found him putting in his car my dustbin , along with the broken christmas lights i had thrown in there....Like Sean bm i lost my temper , and in my best Polish i told him if he came again i was going to shoot him... I felt a bit guilty about this later , but it worked , and he did not return...

When i told this tale to my friend down the road he told an even better tale...He had bought a house in need of much repair , and it was months later when the house was startiing to look very nice that the seller turned up , and said he had changed his mind about the sale and wanted to have his house back...for the same price of course....anybody else had a similar experiance...?

History / German POWs after WW2 - did the allies commit mass murder? [228]

I think one of the biggest tragedies caused by the Allies was the handing over of Russian , Ukrainian , Belrussians etc that had been freed from German prison camps at the insistance of Stalin...Stalin did not accept that these people were prisoners of war , as far as he was concerned there were only those that fought and lived , and those that fought and died , he didn,t accept the idea that anyone should surrender , so these people were traitors...

Along with these people were the many who had fought in German uniform in the hope of gaining independance for their country from the Russians , large numbers of Ukrainians , and Belarussians were captured by the Allies...

Stalin demanded that all these people were handed over to Russian forces , and not suprisingly they did not want to go..

Eventually these people were forced at gunpoint by British and Americn soldiers to walk over into Russian held area,s , most of them wound up in camps in Siberia , thats if they were not killed..

The Allies knew what was going to happen to these people , but were reluctant to anger Stalin , nobody was ready for another war with the Russians....

Life / Which area of Poland speaks the least English? [12]

I imagine any place that is not a busy city , and away from tourist area,s will be the place...many children are now learning English at school , so you will find younger people speaking English all over the place....find a village where it is mostly older people , they won,t speak English i suspect...

Chinese and Indians are knocking out really cheap scooters

...For gods sake don,t anybody buy one of these Chinese scooters..not untill the quality improves...yes there are a lot of em in Poland , cos they are cheap , but they don,t last long , they are made from very bad materials...Buy a jap scooter...more expensive , but it lasts longer than three months...
