Life / Poverty in Poland [50]

cigarette marketing is a hell of a lot more agressive in poland than the uk

interesting. There seems to be a big crackdown recently on smuggling of cigs from Poland to UK.. other countries too, but Ive seen them searching bags more and the police in London seem to be cracking down on the street sellers..

Life / Poverty in Poland [50]

I personally like cheese and I really had to look for a variety all over town, which was not the case with alcohol. It's available 24 hours/7 days a week and cheap.

Why would that be the case???

simple - supply and demand... guess there is more demand for booze 24/7 than there is for cheese. Its the same in many suburbs of London.. its illegal, but very easy to buy booze 24/7 if you know where to go.. however, you can also buy cheese, fruit & veg and just about anything else you need.

Life / Poverty in Poland [50]

I think its an interesting post.. I know there is high unemployment and badly paid jobs in Poland, which is presumably why many migrate to other countries in search of work.. however, this must be leaving some gaps in the labour market in Poland.. I heard that the government was calling for people to go home to fill jobs.. just wondering if anyone knows anything more about this (ie) is it true, if so in what areas of the job market are you lacking employees because of migration and what incentives (if any) are they offering to those who return?

News / Man from Zakopane who cut off his own genitals [53]

I heard of something similar in Wales, but that was because Wales won a rugby match and the fan did it as an expression of joy

you are right.. found this in the news:
Rugby fan tells how he lost his tackle

A Welsh rugby fan has spoken out about how he hacked off his own testicles after his team beat England.
Geoffrey Huish, 31, took an agonising ten minutes to perform the op using a pair of blunt wire cutters, says the Sun.
Then he put his severed parts in a blue plastic bag and staggered to a social club to tell fellow Wales fans what he'd done.

Jobless Geoffrey finally collapsed with blood pouring from his groin as horrified drinkers put his testicles in a pint glass of ice.
They were handed to paramedics who rushed him to hospital - but surgeons could not sew them back.

Geoffrey, of Senghenydd, spent several months in a psychiatric unit as experts tried to fathom his actions.

He said: “I’d told my pal Gethin Probert before the game that Wales didn’t stand a chance. It wasn’t a bet, but I said I’d cut my balls off if we won...

“So I started hacking away at my tackle. It took about ten minutes and there was quite a lot of pain — but I just kept going.

“The cutters were blunt so I had to keep snipping. I cut my penis as well. There was a lot of blood but not as much as you would expect.”

He added: “I think about what happened every day and still haven’t come up with a good reason why. I’d had a lot going on and felt a bit down. I can’t have kids now, but still want a family. Maybe I’ll adopt.”

News / Man from Zakopane who cut off his own genitals [53]

Someone else mentioned this the other day.. this was in a UK paper yesterday, apparantly his wife had left him so he chopped off his huje and jaja after drinking a bottle of vodka. I was just wondering if this is normal behaviour in Poland? :)

Love / Polish Girl and American Guy? [33]

It seems that some people forget how to behave abroad, especially when they visit a poorer country.

true enough.. ive witnessed this firsthand in much poorer countries than Poland..but most girls are also savvy. As in the movie, its all a question of economics.

Im only joking about Slovakia, I wouldnt mind going there.

Anway, (she says trying to get back on thread so I wont be deleted).. Nyman 26 I am an English girl with Polish bf. Would be happy to share my experiences of the cultural differences with you if you are interested..

Love / Discussion about Polish Men's Tempers [103]

In response to the initial question..I think theres a difference between having a bad temper and this manifesting itself into physical violence. My man has a very bad temper sometimes, but although we argue at times I know he would never lift a finger to me, and if he (or any man) did he (not I) would be straight out of the door no matter how much I loved him. As for weed making you violent/agressive.... although there may be some very strong strains, its more likely to mellow you out. Not that I want to be seen as any authority on the latter :)

Life / Real life of a Polish (the Great Woman, or even the Humble Man) :) [20]

Interesting comments. Heres another from me. I live with my boyfriend, we are not married (we would like to some day, but he is still married to someone else). We are in love with each other (not just lust) He is a Catholic, I am a Protestant, we both believe in God and attend Church regularly, in fact I even work for the Church.. I dont expect you all to agree with this, but I guess every case is different.. so dont judge everyone who is 'living in sin' the same.

In my home I make the final decisions, but I talk to my wife about them first.

wow. shes some lucky woman :) equality is well and truly alive in your household then!

Note: I was being sarcastic.. just in case anyone thought I meant it.

Life / Polish Girl Fashion - "less is more"? [108]

My gran told me years ago that the way to judge a person was by their footwear.

I agree with your gran. You can tell a lot about a person by their choice of footwear..and this includes trainers, which are often cooler than shoes anyway. How about white towelling sports socks ..are they acceptable daily wear?(outside of the gym) It took me about 6 months to wean my man off them.

Fashion in Poland.. are patterned socks considered subversive?

My Polish bf says that when he goes back to Poland, his family and friends ridicule his clothes. (we live in the UK and he dresses fashionably for here, although I may be biased since Im his stylist). In particular they dont like the fact that he wears an earring, patterned socks and has highlighted hair (all of which are not especially outrageous). I can understand this amongst the older generation (eg. his mom), but even his brother who is in his 30s says that real men should wear black socks and that only gays wear earrings in Poland. I understand that fashions differ from country to country, but surely this conservative attitude cant be that wide spread?

Life / Real life of a Polish (the Great Woman, or even the Humble Man) :) [20]

well said. I agree. Its a lovely romantic dream, but in my opinion its better to experience the reality before you sign the contract... and although one doesnt marry to have sex, if you dont try it out before how do you know if you will be compatible.. and if you arent and/or have no experience of sex beforehand..its highly likely that one of you will seek sexual liaisons outside of the marriage at some point in the future. Very sad, but i believe true.

News / Dealing with constant insults against Polish [323]

Cantonese is a language spoken in China (there are several languages, but this is one of the main ones)
China

This is according to the actual numbers of people who speak various languages.. (ie) given the huge numbers of Cantonese speaking people in China, although it isnt spoken in other countries it still makes it one of most widely spoken languages (in terms of sheer numbers of people) I cant be bothered to look up the actual statistics, so Im sure some stat freak will prove me wrong..

News / Dealing with constant insults against Polish [323]

who is 'we'.. English people? Geographically Spanish is the 2nd most widely spoken language in the world.. after Cantonese (I think).. English is widely spoken in some African and Asian countries because of Colonialism and has become the language of choice for many. It is the education system in many countries that dictates that children learn English.. as it is accepted that this is widely spoken and will therefore be beneficial to those wishing to travel or engage in international commerce...

News / Dealing with constant insults against Polish [323]

Its true that there are some expats in Spain that dont make the effort to learn the language, but thats just not true of everyone. I speak fluent Spanish and have lived and worked in Spain and I have many UK friends there that also speak Spanish and have Spanish friends. Perhaps you would care to list these many countries where everyone hates the English...

oh and actually many people do speak their own languages here in the UK.. you are making me mad with your ignorant racist views...thank god all Spaniards arent like you, otherwise I'd become a racist too
