History / Why communism failed in Poland? [275]

In fact there's nothing bad in any ideology.

Rubbish.

What's usually bad is the way it conducts.

If the theory doesn't fit change the people....Rubbish.

Just sit and wait for the way it will be conduct this time... then we may have an exchange of views.

If the Socialist scandinavians have their way the E.U. would be socialist but that is watered down communism.

Bloody commie! ha ha ha ha

History / Why communism failed in Poland? [275]

Cuban, Cambodian or Russian communism?.

Communism was bound to fail because it goes against human nature.

People were not treated all the same during communism, humans can not do that.
Banana economics, people did not need to work at their jobs because they would be paid anyway,
100% employment they called it 100% disaster i call it.
Communism i find that it is all about the party.

I

Good choice of topic.

Life / Warsaw palm tree - interesting or a waste of money? [20]

They still somehow have a "prehistoric" look to them, but that may just be our way of looking at exotic tropical species as dwellers in temperate climates.

Ha, so all those dinosaur books and films are inaccurate?.
I used to think bananas grew the other way round, like in cartoons.

Monkey puzzles and their close relatives (Araucaria spp.) were one of the first groups of conifers to diverge from the rest.

Apart from actually looking like a tree that'd confuse a monkey attempting to climb it, on further instection they look more like cacti, though guys.

Ginkgos have been around about as long as conifers

Are they not conifer then?.
Could you also post pictures about what it is you are talking of because I know very little about plants.
Dilophosaurus amidst Ginkgos

Even more ancient are things like horsetails, ferns (including tree ferns that I mentioned earlier)

Ferns are also one of my favorite plants, I remember as a child being told how old they were, I am impressed.
Later the fern was used to describe fractals in chaos theory to me. A triangle in a triangle in a triangle....

hgtrfsetgf

Think even of Nelson on his column in London.

We used to have a statue of nelsons column in Dublin on O'Connell street we disliked it so much we blew it up.

often find myself drifting into a deep sleep.

Talking about plants used to have the same effect on me.

When I see a palm tree, I think of Miami and estate houses.
They will have to probably spend money on protecting it from the cold of winter?.

Life / Warsaw palm tree - interesting or a waste of money? [20]

your geological terminology

What are you talking about?.

Wasn't there another thread about palm trees being a grass and walking?.

Does it have a name yet?

Hmmm... could be "Bob" but then again I call everything I can not pronounce in Polish "Bob".

Real Estate / Angel city Development in Krakow [33]

do you know any prices for the square metre?

Do you mean the price for finish or to buy?.
Finishes are around 1000 Zloty per M2.
Purchase price depends on which floor and the exchange rate.
The price is set in Euros, so it is substantially cheaper today than it was last summer.

And do people have to pay a deposit firstly?

For finish, the answer is yes.
To purchase an apartment, I would imagine the answer is yes too but I am sure you can make a verbal reservation until you can transfer the money.

And what about
the partnership of the developer with Lehman Brothers?

When instalments are paid to Angel City it goes into a bank account that Angel city can't touch but the bank use it as collateral.

If something does happen to Angel City, the money is returned to the purchaser.

I have also noticed that there are no windows in the bathroom. Danger of
mould?

It is very common not to have a window in the bathroom.
So long as the bathroom is well ventilated and the correct materials are used, there should be no problems with mould.
I am from Ireland, Poland is a much drier country and does not have the huge problems with mould that we have.
Although you are right to ask.

Photos have no evidence at all.

Evidence of what, exactly?.
I have many photos of this project.
The builders are working on it.

It is said that there will be more developers in
Cracow who have to go to the cuckoo soon.

There are always developers that will not be able to survive trying times.
I think this project is too far in not to be finished but of course anything is possible but I do not see any real danger.

I would be not too naive and I recommend everyone here not to invest without any bank information about the developer.

You are correct, people should check out all aspects of a developer before committing.

The project is near completion.
Hand overs have taken place and there is about a month left before completion.

In my opinion, this is an excellent project.
The quality and layout of the plan is very good, with thought put into it.
The location is second to none, especially with all that is happening across the road, hotel, offices, train station being moved under ground.

The one worry I had was noise form the traffic but the windows absorb most of the noise and I do not see it as a problem any more.

The builders have however been very difficult if you want any changes made.
The late completion is frustrating a lot of people.

Have you bought in this project, are you thinking of buying or just curious?.

I am not associated with Angel City in any way.

Life / City Pole versus country Pole [27]

The economy is different. You want to make money and move to a city,

This is a relatively new phenomenon,
from what I gather.
It used to be 45% independent farmers here,
6 years ago.
I would imagine that number is greatly reduced now?.

Proper country people

Hermann Hesse had a dream/ideal,
to live like real country people,
the noble savage,
to live off the the land
and to be independent.

Now Hesse, was a suburbanite and when he was older realised that he had been torturing himself with this "perfect world" and everything was second best to what it could be.

I don't know if I am explaining this well but it left quite an impression on me.

The bottom line is be happy with what you got, country life is not for everyone.

Cites are harder to defend, when talking in such grand terms but I love'em.
Even though they do my head in, have I made myself completely misunderstood? ha ha ha

Did you go to Newgrange?.
I was thinking of telling everyone on here abou Newgrange but this thread is about Dublin city centre.

Life / City Pole versus country Pole [27]

where it is part high-rise, part grotty estates, but partly gentrified inner-city suburb.

I really like this about London.

I have lived in london many times but i always manage to escape, thank goodness.

fairly typical of Poles who have relocated to England - they come from a very small town

Poland has a population of about 38 million people but there are only about 2 million in Warsaw.
Most people live in the country.

ill be that guy in the tractor who all the drivers are cursing.

To be a real Pole, you have to make your own tractor out of found pieces of metal that you weld together yourself.

I suppose they do, well Londoners are a different breed altogether.

Ha ha ha, that is probably what a lot of people from out side of Dublin would say.

Im a country bumpkin now, give it a few years ill be that guy in the tractor who all the drivers are cursing.

Me too, but I have to live near a city.
I saw two shop assistance, young girls, shovelling large amounts of wet heavy snow yesterday, they really put their back in to it.
You wouldn't find that in a large city.

Life / City Pole versus country Pole [27]

Any time I travel a country, it is always better to roam the country.
Cities are all the same (depending of course).
Country people have more time, they are usually more friendly and interested.
In saying that though, I prefer doing business with city folk for the same reason.

Do Londoners not look down at country people?.

Real Estate / New Landlord - taxation on rental income [6]

Alternatively you could set yourself up as a one-person company with the sole defined corporate purpose of renting your own real estate.

Alternatively, if you are letting out to private people (not companies).
You can pay 5% (just came down from 10%).

The second way Harry is suggesting was better in the past because you were able to minus the costs.
But due to the new taxation law it works out better to just pay the 5%.
I think they made it less because most people 'forget to declare the income.'.

you said that the going rate for an accountant is 200 zlt? Is that correct? The only reason why i ask is that i am then being fleeced by my current accountant.

It depends on what you are using the accountant for, if you have an LTD company and are dealing with a lot of invoices, it is substantially more.

News / Forget Ukraine! The question is: " Is Poland going down??" [36]

OK, so approximately two million Poles are going to come back... and...???.
Unemployment is high here and the wages are low, much lower than there.
Of course some people are going to come back but not a majority, despite your best wishes.

News / More and more jobs moving to Poland from other parts of Europe... [50]

Where does it leave europe when all the companies have moved to asia?

Excellent question!.

This is it, the European Union has to come up with some long term strategies to ensure these companies stay here.

I was surprised, why didn't Del move to India?.

We need to focus on our selves.
I do not want Europe to become helpless consumers.

News / Forget Ukraine! The question is: " Is Poland going down??" [36]

Foreign investors are withdrawing from Poland. The economic growth and wealth in Poland was/is for a large part driven by these investors.

There is of course a problem with exports due to the credit crunch.
A lot of foreign companies are slowing down production.
However it should be noted other companies are moving here but at a slower rate.

Most banks in Poland are owned by foreign banks who are already in a difficult situation, these mother banks cannot (or don't want to) save their polish branches.

I don't know where you get this from???.
More Banks are opening up here.
The Polish law was so strict that the money could not leave Polish branches of foreign owned banks.

The millions of Polish workers outside Poland were generating nice cash flows into Poland, but these people are working in sectors that are hit hard by the crisis (Construction, transportation, factories). This is already stopping.

Are you saying millions of Poles are all going to come back? and swallow their money?.

I don't have experience in the world of finance but maybe that's a good thing. I can be more objective and not brainwashed. I am, however, capable of forming opinions based on what I watch and read.

It is posts like this Seanus that make me question your statements.

Polish people should withdraw their hard earned money from foreign banks, and deposit it in Polish banks, or keep it under the mattress as a last resort.

Ha ha ha,
Crnogorac3, you're a nutter.

I have no problems with secularization of anything as long as proper risk analysis is conducted by all parties especially the rating agencies.

Secularization?, as opposed to what?.

Every day sixty thousand Poles die in a civil war between the federation of Warsaw and the gypsie republic of Białystok, Poland as we know it is over.

Apart from giving me a chuckle, I have no idea what you mean.

-------------------------------------------------------------------
Is Poland going down?.

The effects of the world crises are being felt here.
To a much less degree than her neighbours.
I think this down turn is an excellent opportunity to get rid of all the bureaucratic nonsense in this country.

-Some things have already very recently been changed here,
It only costs 5000 PLN to set up a Społka z.o.o.
Plus it will take 24 hours to set up (buy them off the shelf).

-There is no longer a need to apply for building permission, so long as you adhere to the general plan.

I also work in Lithuania and the new government has done some of the stupidest things imaginable.
They invented new taxes, crippling small business's and worsening the problems they face.

I have noticed that a lot of the construction firms in Poland are now building the roads with the E.U. money.
I drive through Poland often and there is great progress being made.

The value of the PLN is worrying but the government has been trying to rectify this and I believe are finally serious about joining the Euro currency.

There are going to be tough negotiations between Poland and the E.U. setting the exchange rate but remember Czech have renegotiated twice already.
With the Euro currency, Poland will be stronger and less fluctuation will accrue.

I also think it is a good time for Poland because the house prises will not continue to inflate before it becomes ridiculous (in some places it has already.)

I honestly don't think there will be a change for the better until the U.S.A and other countries start coming up again.

=============================================

This is the precise time to invest if you have the money, of course it is.

In certain sectors.

Dundrum

One of the schools I attended was in Dundrum, before they moved the whole town half a mile up the road. Escalators'n'cars'n'crowds'n'levels...

Grafton street is always nice, it has buskers.
Opening scene.
From the film, ONCE: Falling Slowly

nikttaki, you are not giving Ireland enough time, stay longer and get more in.

UK, Ireland / Dublin city centre - interesting places to see [33]

If you like great Whiskey, there is the Jamesons Whiskey distillery.

There is the Joyce's Ulysses pub crawl/walks.

The one thing I would recommend to get a real taste of Ireland the most would be.
Go to a Hurling match and soak in the atmosphere (and Guinness). It is electric, you'll have to check for ticket availability.

Dublin has changed quite a bit since the 10 years ago when I left but these things I am suggesting are evergreen.

And you have to go to a Trad session (traditional Irish music) in one of the many many pubs, just ask anybody when you are there as dates vary.

Have a great time.

Hello nikttaki,

I am from Dublin, perhaps it would be best if you told us what you are interested in?.

There are many things to do in Dublin pubs, places of historical interest, live music etc...
I don't know about womens clothes though but Grafton street in the centre is a good start.

Hey Wroclaw Boy,

Have you been skidding around any fields or car parks?.

I love pulling hand-breakers in car parks when it is covered in ice and snow.

I am only posting this because I realise there are many people who would never have tried this.
