Life / I loved Poland when I visited and I want to live there. [20]

I really do NOT believe PL uses same methods toward ANYbody who wants to live in PL.

There's a terrible red-tape and there's lot of ill-will from an average biurwa. You're more likely to encounter procedures lasting for months, and even years with different excuses (read: $hit) given you by different immigration officers.

Language / Conditional - tryb przypuszczający [21]

Guess it's po+[verb's past tense form]+
(a/o)bym (1 os. l.p.), (a/o)byś(2 os. l.p.), (a/o)by(3 os. l.p.)
byśmy (1 os. l.mn.), byście (2 os. l. mn.), by się (3 os. l. mn)

Note: 1) If you begin your verb with 'po', it's forma dokonana. Without 'po' - niedokonana
2) (a/o) refers to female and neutral form of the verb respectively,
3) [verb's past tense form] in plural indicates the male or female form, not the ending.

I'm finding it really difficult to learn about conditionals.

Language / Poles! How do you cope with English phonetics versus English spelling? [37]

There's no half-truths. One of their official language is English, that's true, but their native lingo is Maltese (btw. the only Semitic language written in Latin alphabet). Just ask for anything in English to an average Maltese in the street to find out.

News / Polish engineer beheaded in Pakistan. [347]

I wouldn't be so sure that they know what they are doing. Many Commanders would disagree with you.

Perhaps I was over-optimistic judging NATO, but since countries are reluctant to commit more forces the war is going at snail's pace. But imo mass bombings aimed at partisans would probably be as inefficient as in Vietnam and would lead to huge civilian casualties.

News / Polish engineer beheaded in Pakistan. [347]

Serbia-style bombing would be inefficient and would cause widespread criticism. As Mao Ze Dong said, guerrillas are fish in civilian sea, and that's the case here in my opinion, and mostly civilians would be casualties. One factor against carpet bombing is the terrain in Afghanistan. Mountains, tunnels, hideouts would make efficiency of Allies' superior firepower greatly limited. I think NATO know what they're doing - their action may seem slow, but it's the only way considering limited forces available.

Genealogy / Do I look Polish? (Part II -- Much more detail than other topic) [109]

Hi,

My last name is Preusser and my ancestors came from Poland. I don't think I look Polish but I'm not too familiar with the region so I'm going to ask you.

You look a bit like a Southern European, e.g. Italian, but I'd say you'll pass as a Pole too, if it's so important to you.

UK, Ireland / Polish people in an english army [85]

So tell him to obtain his permanent residency status (he needs to be able to prove that he's been living in the UK for at least a year, e.g. by producing his payslips), and then after further 4 years he'll be able to apply for his UK citizenship and if he's still young enough join the Army and pursue whatever career he wants.

Language / WHO AND WHEN COINED THE TERM DUPEK? [13]

I even heard of translation of the words 'Oh, f*ck' as 'Jezu Chryste' in one of movies. I'm not sure if it's true or just an urban legend.

Life / Car Window Tinting - is it legal in Poland? [20]

Windscreen in your car should have at least 75 % transparency, the other windows - 70 %, so it seems they have to be pretty clear. Police have some devices to verify it.

Language / WHO AND WHEN COINED THE TERM DUPEK? [13]

Taking your information about Poland from TV productions is not the best source, don't you think ? Besides there was strong censorship, which not only included chopping off anything that was politically suspicious, but also stronger swearwords (there were exceptions, mind you).

BTW I no knwo fo the playing card connection.

So now you know.

Language / WHO AND WHEN COINED THE TERM DUPEK? [13]

As far as I know, prior to then, only the terrm półdupek had existed in Polish. Anyone recall when they first heard the term dupek?

Where the hell do you get your 'revelations' from ? I heard and used the word when I was in my primary school (the eighties), it's also a slang term for 'jack' at cards.
