Language / My Learning Polish Woes... [64]

Or write it down!
Climacium Dendroides (my favourite moss, one that rather resembles a tiny pine tree) is one I remembered early on using a mnemonic. Can't really apply that to Polish though.

Of course when Poles speak fast...., I find it very difficult to keep up ;)
But we're getting there.

Language / HOW DID BAKTERIA BECOME FEMININE? [23]

Ok, the scientific explanation, certain words in Polish, including foreign loanwords are "masculine" by nature but end in the letter a. As we all know words ending in a in Polish take "feminine" endings. Aren't grammar rules wonderful!

And then there are those consonant clusters. UGGH! How is the poor beginner supposed to know from listening, even in clear diction, that e.g. 'potrzebujesz' isn't written 'poczebujesz' etc.

You need to see the written word as associated with the spoken word of course. It works though.
The only letter I significantly don't hear properly is j which I would sometimes hear as y or maybe i.

Hey LC, I sympathize.

Polish is really tough.
I've been at it exactly 5 years now (My God!) and it wasn't until year 2 that I really began to find my way around it.

Try and listen to audio a lot, to get your ear in.
One big advantage is that once you can pronounce the words you will find that you can spell them. Polish is spelt exactly as it sounds.

You'll find loads of help here of course.

UK, Ireland / The Orange Order vs Poles...again [37]

no way, they bulid everyting on that, no science, no secular society. they based everything on ridiculous believes

You are quite mistaken. The current and immediate past situation in Northern Ireland has little to do with religion, it is more related to the political aspirations of Unionists and Nationalists (google each term - there's a vast amount of info available on them) and to previous discriminations of Unionists against Nationalists.

Everyone's at peace now, so there should certainly be no problems for a Polish person in Northern Ireland, regardless of religion.

Of course there's always the looney fringe who want trouble, but you get those in every country - they're all the same, but with different excuxes.

UK, Ireland / Are polish pupils harming native british childrens education? [280]

I see Mr Noimmigration seems to have deserted his topic for now. Quel dommage (considering his observed views he he is unlikely to understand this phrase, being of such limited an intelligence as indicated by his ravenous rantings on this forum thus far).

Pig ignorant stupidity and violent antagonism (as that displayed by Mr.NI) should always be opposed at every opportunity.

Przyprszam, I'm in an uncompromising mood tonight heh :D

The above post is moi, and not a similarily named guest!

Language / Basic words to say to a Polish girl? [40]

Is it possible to get her some polish books appropriate to her age? If she had some (funny for example) stories to read in her own language it might allow her to calm down a bit and not feel so lost. Then she might begin to interact with the others.

If there were any other polish children in the school that she could communicate with it might also set her at ease a little.

Language / Recommend a text book for learning Polish... [10]

I agree, Teach Yourself Polish isn't great.
May I suggest the course here:
polish.slavic.pitt.edu/firstyear/lessons
It's a free download.
Grab all of the other bits too - a dictionary and grammar book in particular, plus sounds files:
polish.slavic.pitt.edu

The course starts you at the beginning and should keep you going for a good while. If it get too tough then it hasn't cost anything to try it, and sure work at your own pace :)

Beer and curry eh...!

News / Gold Prices in Poland? [17]

Some investment gurus say that gold will go up a lot in the next few years.
(Perhaps they're the ones selling the gold!)

UK, Ireland / Poles leaving Dublin? [14]

The only polish woman in stylish nighclubs and bars in britian and ireland are the ones opening the doors or serving drinks.

You don't speak for Ireland here.

UK, Ireland / Michael Palin visits Poland tonight. [19]

I like them. They are quirky - that's their charm.
I'll always watch Palin.
I remember when he was doing his round the world trip, we were listening to it daily on the BEEB radio as it happened. Great stuff :D

UK, Ireland / POSK, London - what is it like these days? [27]

my carrier bags ripped and my groceries went everywhere, at the same time I got all tangled up with my iPod and couldn't find my Oyster Card and people were shoving newspapers and flyers at me from every direction.

Aw, that's not the station's fault though, is it? Surely the iPod has to bear some of the blame (iPodować - iPodowam, iPodowasz, iPodowa..., etc heh)

No, the main street near Ravenscourt Park that runs along to Hammersmith

Ah, next time I'm over I'll have to take a look there.

people are mixed up everywhere

You're right, of course - much the same as Dublin, only on a larger scale. Perhaps I just had built up a high expectation of POSK and it's immediate area.

I used to live for a time in London in the nineties, near one of the er "Irish areas." ;)
