USA, Canada / Poles in Chicago History [5]

I think they called Poland German or others

No, they actually give the impression that Poland never ceased to exists (see second paragraph), which is historically wrong.

Quote: "...the 1850s to the early 1920s, and was driven primarily by economic and structural change in Poland".

This is interesting story.

And partially wrong, too. There was no Poland between 1850 and the end of WW1.

Genealogy / Father born in Wieruszow - Amrozynska, Knop [6]

Jo-Anne

Knop or Knoop is a German name. Members of that family were farmers who mainly settled in the Posen/Poznan area, AFAIK.

News / Time for a review of Germanic Polish relations ? [30]

you're not a descendant of those directly affected so who're you to pass judgement.

How do you know? :)
Besides, I know more than enough about the German/Polish history to have my own opinion. So I stick to my argument: don't blame someone for a crime if you've committed crimes yourself. Anyhow, it's history now and you're correct: the two nations are moving into the right direction.

News / Time for a review of Germanic Polish relations ? [30]

You really know nothing about Polish-German history do you? We can discuss our 1000 years of hate and 19 years of reluctant partnership, at best.

You definitely know nothing about Polish/German history. 1000 years of hate - what a bullsh*t.

...and cruelty of expulsions perpetrated by the Poles on poor innocent Germans conveniently omitting the events that lead to this.

That the ethnic cleansing was a direct result of WW2 doesn't matter, because it still doesn't justify the brutality during the expulsion process. Don't call someone an animal when you behave like one yourself...

News / If Poland is attacked by Russia will N.A.T.O help defend Poland or not? [171]

And if NATO which is to say Germany joins with its full weight Russia gets a boot up their face by combined Polish and German armies and the war ends in Belarus with some sort of armistice.

That would depend on how fast the combined Polsih/German forces make progress, I'd guess.

thats a LOT of money and we aint exactly USA when it comes to $

Not to forget the costs involved for developing nuclear war heads and the technology to enrich uranium to weapons grade.

Russia is...how do I say it..inoccupyable?

Yeah, I know, a few nations tried that before... ;)

And why in heavens name would NATO want to occupy Russia

We were talking about the theoretical chance of Russia attacking Poland. In that case NATO would join the fight, and after possibly defeating the Russians they would have to occupy the country for a while. Something along the lines of the Iraq war, I suppose.

By Poland?

By NATO, including Poland.

Russia simply wouldn't attack Poland as the potential risk
would outweigh the potential gains - that's what having nuclear weapons all about.

Russia would face the potential risk of getting nuked by other NATO forces already. Another 50 imaginary Polish war heads on top won't make a difference IMHO.

News / If Poland is attacked by Russia will N.A.T.O help defend Poland or not? [171]

we have to get our own nukes

What would that change? Russia would wipe out Poland completely, and in return Poland would destroy a handful of Russian cities and military installations.

Differs what you mean with "losing"....

I mean that they are running the risk to lose a large war and get occupied afterwards.

I was hinting at the Walter Reed hospital scandal a few years back and at the mess in other VA hospitals.

scrappleton

It's a myth that the American health care system is the best in the world. Don't get fooled by the propaganda of your politicians. You as a veteran must know this better than anybody else.

Genealogy / I need help with the surname "Wandke" (West Pomerania) [13]

matryoshka

Your grandfather Gustav Wandke was born 1857 in Arnswalde, Pommern, and NOT in Choszczno (the Polish name of the town used after WW2). If you google for Arnswalde and Wandke, you'll find plenty of hits.

genealoger.com/german/pommern/kreis/arnswalde.htm
wiki-de.genealogy.net/Klassifikation_1718/19_Arnswalde

If you check the LDS web site you'll find over 600 datasets for the name Wandke and its variations.

News / Man Why Do People Like PO Instead Of PIS [120]

Generally working experience is welcome, experience in specific trade even more so

Okay, so like everywhere else. Being "punished" for having worked abroad sounded somewhat unusual to me.

my current company demands is an e-mail to the previous employer but even thats unusual.

Do you have written references in Poland like they have in Germany for example?

you know what I mean buy ridiculous demands on the side of EU

When you're dealing with the bureaucrats in Brussels, don't expect any logic.

The question might be more - will they find employment? I know some educated people who are openly saying that they wouldn't give employment to someone who worked in a totally unrelated trade in the UK just for the money

Interesting point. In the west, international experience is almost always an asset. Not so in Poland, that's what you're saying?

News / Man Why Do People Like PO Instead Of PIS [120]

It handled them without being severely hit before they left

What was the unemployment rate before they left? What I'm trying to say is that there's always a correlation between tough economic times (including high unemployment) and the population voting for extremist parties - either left or right-wing. Would Poland rather tend to vote right or left, maybe even ex-communists?

but seriously why would there be such an exodus

Rising unemployment in the host countries, or increasing racism against Poles in Ireland or UK for example? I'm not sure how much I can trust the information some folks post on PF, if you know what (and whom [not you]) I mean... ;)

I **** on what opinion we have in the world as long as the world respects our interests

Well, if you sh*t on the world's opinion you won't get much respect in return, do you?

Not going to happen

Well, that's the question. Just imagine that the majority of Poles working in Ireland and GB all of a sudden comes back home. I don't think the Polish economy could handle this without being severely hit.

Anyway, I'm just trying to understand the motivation of the Polish people to vote for certain parties in large numbers, and what would happen in case of an economical crisis.

Sokrates

What would happen if the Polish economy tanks and you have unemployment rates of 20% and more like in East Germany?

now we're stuck with them for another 5-10 years

Look at the former GDR - they are still stuck with the commies after 20 years. The only difference to the past: instead of being incarcerated by those SED criminals, people vote for them in free elections nowadays (for a reason). Are you really sure that Poland will get rid of the communists within the next 5 to 10 years?

News / Should Poland acquire the atomic bomb? [28]

Still, why should Russia have them and not Poland?

The answer is simple: because there are already far too many nuclear weapons on the planet. What does a (still) poor country like Poland want with that crap; especially when it's a member of NATO? Aren't there any more pressing issues in Poland to spend money on?

Still, that shouldn't preclude the right of self determination of Poles.

Yup, just like Iran, North Korea, Israel, South Africa, Pakistan... ;)
Poland signed and ratified the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, so the nuke option is off the table anyway (yeah, I'm optimistic).
