History / PIƁSUDSKI & BANDERA? [11]

I think Ukrainians don't have any ill feelings towards Pilsudski at all. On the other hand, UPA leader Bandera is like a sore on every Polish I have ever met. I have lived in Ukraine for 19 years since my birth and first time I heard about Pilsudsky - just as a political figure and nothing to do with independance fight etc. - was when I was older and not in Ukraine. From what I have noticed in Polish connaisances I had, Bandera is already a part of Polish everyday vocabulary. I think Poles should overcome their feelings and learn to move on. If we would be constantly talking about how poor and saint Polish were in Wolyn' and in Ukraine in general or how bad English are for, supposedly, not inviting Poles to some parade, we will die of boredom. As someone recommended around here - self-reflection and mirror-gazing is of great value to evolve as a nation.

Regarding the bike rally - that's fine and it is not the right time to do something like this even though it was 100 anniversary of Stepan Bandera. Smart move on Polish part - neither side needs tension nowadays. We have other, much more important things to do. And definately more Ukraine than Poland.

News / French and Poles [146]

M-G get the f*ck out,

S., have some dignity. MG showed you some examples which marred a bit your Polish sainthood, the holiest nation in the world. So what? St. Francis was a sinner as well, but through hard work you will be able to clean yourself and become the holiest country of all again. I have no doubt in that.

News / Rydzyk gets away with racism yet again [198]

Political correctness is not his environment.

Who cares what his environment is? Do you think I can do similar things and later in court say that: "Listen, this is not my forte, I am from another "environment"" and be justified?

Being a bishop, I would kick that ass out of the church. I wish that Rydzyk had a chance to see his "beloved" Jesus and the way he looked and stank. If this is what resides in Czestochowa, then what we can say of other sanctuaries? What an example of so-called follower of Christ who washed feet of his desciples, whereas that joke-priest made these unacceptable racist remarks.

Some of you begin to compare him with other political figures in order to justify Rydzyk. Why? Is this the way to deal with similar things - see whether there was a worse scenario and if this is the case let the perpetrator go, because he was not AS RACIST as someone before him. It is ridiculous and immature.

Also how can deep knowledge of Polish or being a native speaker make you think that by translating his words we are losing "innocent joke the poor old priest saintfully uttered upon the herd in his native Polish"? Is your language that sophisticated that even simple text becomes untranslatable correctly, with full meaning?

History / Who lost WWII (besides Poland)? [42]

Ukraine - lost 7.5 million people. My country was completely devastated. If you take that the total death toll was 60-70 million people killed (incredibly horrible number), more than 10% of these were Ukrainians.

I hope nothing similar will ever occur again. It is horror.

Sorry, can't think of any that are ex-UPA for you.

I knew you were bluffing. I asked you to give me a few names of historians you read and you refused. How low is that? I don't need books written by UPA veterans or any Ukrainian historian. I didn't ask for that. Anyhow, PK, I wasn't expecting much anyway from you ;)

I am not surprised because you have nothing to "sell". Lies, maybe, I won't buy them. Regarding reputable historians - would you mind name a few so I can check them out?

News / French and Poles [146]

I recommend you read some history books before you go talking out your arse in public, especially in a place where a disproportionally large percent of the populace will immediately recognize you as doing so.

I would recommend you do the same. But this time pick something better than Polish "historical" books decorating non-existant religious or ethnic tolerance in Commonwealth. These stories you may tell only to Poles (they are majority here, you are correct about that), but to other people be kind not to sell these fairy-tales about "saint and tolerant" Poland. That's simply BS.

History / Poland and Lithuania [161]

liberal, free-market democracy (LFMD).

Yet when you analyze history in hindsight, the existence of "targets" such as LFMD becomes obvious. They exist regardless of whether people who live within that civilization are conscious of them or not.

Ok, here you mention a "target" towards which historically we were all converging - Liberal, Free-Market Democracy. As far as I can see, it says nothing about cultural, linguistic or other ethnical components you are trying to apply to this so-called "convergence". As I mentioned before in 17th century Ukraine had more primary schools than Moskovy and CW together taken. Later on they were forcefully destroyed or converted in Moskovite or Polish Jesuit schools which taught your dialects. Forceful religious installation on the newly conquered territories and religious freedom your constitution claims is usual fairy-tale story. If you invade a country and make your language the only acceptable form to work and deal business in, the upper classes, which usually are after money, will switch like a haircut. Peasants and small merchants remained unfallible carriers of Lithuanian and Ukrainian cultures and languages through centuries, though. If you are willing to call this as your "widespread and willing convergence process" - well, you are entitled to have an opinion. Btw, if you could give a link to cultural and religious target convergence, it would be greatly appreciated. Let's not mix free-market and language or if we do, then some scientific support might be of value.

Again: can you name a democratic constitution in Europe prior to 1791?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution

Agreements and Constitutions of Laws and Freedoms of the Zaporizian Host can be acknowledged as the first European constitution in a modern sense.[2] It was written in 1710 by Pylyp Orlyk, hetman of the Zaporozhian Host. This "Constitution of Pylyp Orlyk" (as it is widely known) was written to establish a free Zaporozhian-Ukrainian Republic, with the support of Charles XII of Sweden. It is notable in that it established a democratic standard for the separation of powers in government between the legislative, executive, and judiciary branches, well before the publication of Montesquieu's Spirit of the Laws. This Constitution also limited the executive authority of the hetman, and established a democratically elected Cossack parliament called the General Council

.

What's with all these ad hominem?

I thought you were a human, no? ;)

Equinox, would you also give me an answer about your Petri dish theory of Polish nation convergence and about modern-day Polish agenda CW had in the past. Any documents or testimonies? How was your drift away from other nations different from other nations' drifts?

News / Poland among the greatest enemies of Russia [112]

My guess is that Politkovkaja was killed because she'd stuck her nose too far in Kadyrov's business. She has never been that harmful for the government and putin himself, yet putin was aware of that she was to be taken out of the way and she finally was killed by Kadyrov's people under his protection and with his connivance.

In February 2007 Kadyrov replaced Alu Alkhanov as President, shortly after he had turned 30, which is the minimum age for the post. He has the support of former Russian President Vladimir Putin and was awarded the Hero of Russia medal, the highest honorary title of Russia

.

On 15 February 2007, Putin signed a decree removing Alkhanov and instating Kadyrov as Chechen's acting president.

Ramzan Kadyrov is an honorary member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences

Anna Politkovskaya, a veteran Russian reporter (murdered in 2006; case unsolved as of April 2009)

I've already killed who I should have killed. And I will kill all of those standing behind them, as long as I myself am not killed or jailed. I will be killing as long as I live... Putin is a beauty. He thinks more about Chechnya than about any other republic. When my father was murdered, he [Putin] personally came down and went to the cemetery. Putin stopped the war. Putin should be made president for life. Strong rule is needed. Democracy is an American invention... Russians never obey their laws. Everyone stole, and only Khodorkovsky is in jail.

Quite a tandem. I have read some Anna Politkovskaya's books. Putin is primarily the main "hero" of her documentaries. She had also some proof of Kadyrov's killings and human rights abuse. As I read again, Sasha, what you wrote, I see you don't argue about Putin's involvement in her murder, correct? Anna was murdered just 3 months before Putin instated Kadyrov as a Chechen's president as you can see from the quotes.

History / Poland and Lithuania [161]

False analogy. PL/Commonwealth (CW) and modern Lithuania/GDL are not equivalent. Poland's case as the heir to CW is much stronger, because of the historical convergence towards Polish culture and language in the CW, away from other ethnic components... For this reason, Poland can be seen as the "target" towards which CW was converging over time. Lithuania cannot be seen as the "target" towards which GDL was converging over time. Quite the opposite.

"Target" towards which CW was converting over time? Haha. What is that? Some new theory of national "targeting" being developed by a new "historian" here. I haven't seen more preposterous statement in my life. Lithuania wasn't a "target" (what in hell does it mean?), but Poland was conceived by Mieszko or some other Zigimund and he set the course into the future, making a "target": "Right now we are CW, but in a couple of centuries we will be Poland" ;) How did it happen that Lithuania has its own culture and language, its own traditions which go back centuries and centuries? Your reasoning is not even funny. It is sad.

They were an ethnic mixture of disenfranchised peasants, mercenaries, nomads, outlaws, etc, not a Petri dish proto-"Ukrainian" nation.

Petri dish? Did you have a concussion or read your first book on biology? Where have you seen a nation that is being developed untouched by other ethnicities? Was your country "targeted" in Petri dish, isolated from any influences from outside and right now Poland is something else but country were there is an ethnic mixture of peasants, mercenaries, nomads, outlaws, retards, scientists etc.? Do you want to say that Poland have or had neither of these? Or "proto" can only be said about CW in regards to Poland? You are ridiculous.

It's true that most descendants of Cossacks live in modern day Ukraine. But the historical Cossacks had no modern-day "Ukrainian" agenda.

What a statement! Bravo! So you have to have some "agenda" to belong to a certain ethnic group? Did CW Poles have a modern-day "Polish" agenda? ;)

Which constitution in Europe preceded 3rd May, 1791? Please give a specific example.

Pylyp Orlyk's Constitution of 1710, 81 years before CW's.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constitution_of_Pylyp_Orlyk

Pylyp Orlyk's Constitution was unique for its historic period, and was one of the first state constitutions in Europe.

History / Poland and Lithuania [161]

I am Lithuanian who lives in Vilnius.

Hi there. Lithuania is a great country. Keep up your old and fantastic culture and language.

Think hard! It will do you a lot of good.

Majority here are unable of doing that. Also they are not interested in making themselves good, they prefer to make to others bad. These people live in mythical state of mind with some ridiculous pretense on the First Constitution in Europe or proto-type of EU. Again, big mouths, small brains.

I wish all the best to Lithuania. Salut from Ukraine.

News / Precedent set in Szczecin for offending homosexuals? [60]

Shouldn't harrassment be considered harrassment regardless of what it's about?

It is considered what it is and most often leads to a legal action. It doesn't have to be connected to religion, sex or race.

News / Precedent set in Szczecin for offending homosexuals? [60]

there is a difference between a gossip and and slander

Absolutely.

Since when does the law care if neighbors gossip about neighbors. Oh man, I can't believe this!

Gossip is what you usually hear from someone who was told by someone's friend's cousin's sister-in-law. It is a different story when someone tells you in face these things.

News / Precedent set in Szczecin for offending homosexuals? [60]

people pretending to be the opposite sex is kind of strange ...huh Maphro??

Do these people take the bread from your table?
And by the way, sex is not what you have between your legs. Nor rubbing against each other can be called love. Who you are and what you feel is in your brain and that can be experienced only by the carrier, not by a drooling bystander who stupidly looks at the pants or skirts. If we are limited to define sex of a person by physical appearance, then IQ should be measured by number of freckles on the butt.

News / Poland among the greatest enemies of Russia [112]

But there aren't any savings. Just a ridiculously huge cost. I suppose you could argue it's worth it for the cleanliness of the environment we'll improve over those years, but that's also not quite what you think. Because it also takes quite a lot of energy to produce those things.

You are right, PK. We shouldn't invest in solar energy. Let's wait when oil price reaches the point when E8,000/person x year won't be enough and Russia again decides to close the tap amid a harsh winter. I think when we have frozen asses, our brains start to process faster. Whatever Germans invented with Desertec technology is bad for us, let's keep on burning oil like we have been doing for 150 years already cause the Earth will give us more and the air will clean itself.

UK, Ireland / Irish Primary schools to teach Polish [223]

Can you remind me how many Japanes living in Ireland compare to Poles.

And you have learning disabilities or something? Logopeds are not that expensive.

At the moment Polish are immigrating to Ireland

Then learn the language, dah!

You seem to be quite knowledgeable about this subject, tell me what is the word among the Ukrainian community in Canada?

I have no idea what Ukrainian community thinks about the issue. I am telling what I think. I am no knowledgeable about the subject at all. But this is what I feel is right and I am expressing it.

Only if they plan to go there

Why then Polish has to be taught in Ireland when Irish are not interested in planning to settle in Poland? As WB said:

Its got nothing to do with living there, its about international business skills.

Love / Could our relationship work despite the language barrier? [34]

do you think this could work ?

What do you think happens to majority of married couples after they lived for awhile and got to know each other like themselves? They get often bored if there is not constantly something new. The longer the process of finding out each other's peculiarities, the more chances it has to survive for a longer time. So not knowing the language is sometimes a blessing. Love doesn't need an accelerator or electronic translator or even a tongue as Sausage put it ;) The rest of our brothers and sisters have no languages as such, but live, sing, procreate and enjoy each other nevertheless. At least try. Good luck!

Many thoughts will be lost in translation :/

It is often for the better.

UK, Ireland / Irish Primary schools to teach Polish [223]

Hi there. Magdalena is from Ireland and my name is Krzysiek and I am from Japan. I need to be confidential as well because of my job (I am a student - shhh!). Using names like Kimoto or Kawasaki would shed my disguise immediately and you would know who I am ;)

I just wanted to put in some of my thoughts into the issue. The country is Ireland, so it's primary concern should be financing its own language - Irish. The school system also should make available languages spoken predominantly in the world - English, French, Chinese, Spanish. For all those interested in any other languages should pay out of their own pockets. Why should children learn Polish and not Japanese then? For me it is simply outrageous. Mass exodus doesn't justify priority of the new language. Nobody forbids you to have your own language taught, but learn to open your own pockets and don't suck it out of the country who took you in just 5 years ago!
